ppl like you who are serious about their music are the ppl that us music producers live for. You are the reason we do what we do. the music industry needs more like you. Peace!
a beautiful music room! great chairs! love the shelves, need some myself.tired of stubbing my toes on old Peaches crates! similar to the one you have at 6:00.great VPI,looks brand new! i'm jealous of that thing! one of these days i'll do things right like you have.until then,i'll just keep them preserved.really enjoyed the tour, really nice looking turntable.my bookshelf turned into a box set storage area on top also!love the classic stereo cabinet.
turntable > preamp > receiver > speakers is the correct sequence. The "receiver" part of that sequence can be replaced by "integrated amplifier" or some sort of dedicated amplifier. Essentially, you need something in the line to amplify the signal and "drive" the speakers. The phono preamp alone cannot do it.
It sounds like your doors are open and you're not in any musical ruts either. The completist in me understands what you mean about only scratching the surface, but this IS the adventure! None of us can ever hear all the music that's out there, even if we devoted our whole life to that pursuit. It's kind of like world travel; you could never see EVERYTHING. We should always keep traveling, though, to "see" as much as we can. As long as there's good music on the stereo, just enjoy the ride!
I loved your room Rob. If I decide to music room my basement, I am going to model it after this setup. I will not duplicate it but I will definitely borrow some of your amazing ideas. The one big thing we have in common is your impeccable organization and neatness. One last thing, give yourself some credit because it is one of the better music rooms than I have ever seen. Top notch my friend. Excellent video. thanks for sharing that, {the other} Rob/Boston
@MrCdnAudiophile - Thanks! The record cleaner demo is almost done, but the video for the system hasn't even been shot yet. Life has a way of getting in the way of the fun stuff!
Music room tours are always a hit! I've already said this, but I envy your music space. Some day I hope to have something very similar. Thanks for the thorough rundown.
Awesome listening space. Very well laid out. I'm very jealous of that record cleaning machine. I'm very much looking forward to your video on your equipment set up. Great video!!
That is an amazing looking music room very spacious and still plenty of room for other shelving units for further record collecting. I'm very happy for you and hope that you and you're family enjoy every single little moment that is spend in listening to music. And thank you for the v.i.p tour my friend
Thank you for sharing this video. It is an extremely nice room, and very inspiring. Congratz with all your work on it. You took your time to film it nicely with great comments, which makes it even more pleasant to look at. Also looking forward to see your video about the sound system, I'm a big fan of great systems. At the end that's what makes our purpose and love sound even better.. I guess the 2 monoblock (pre)amps and speakers already preview something great.
I saw the track listing and quickly tried to find a music sample of the named track but the section I heard sounded nothing like your clip which is the reason for the query, I guess it just needed time for musical development so thanks. Its very cool that you have an open mind about music and are so willing to explore new directions, I know a lot of people who only listen to a couple of genres from cradle to grave and thats always a surprise to me, but its their loss in the end.
You could always diminish the bounce with specialized room treatments. You can also to a lot with area rugs and hanging tapestries, although they won't it the trouble spots like room treatments would.
@Mr666skulls - You're welcome, and thank YOU for the kind words! Speaking of other shelving, I am hoping to build a fourth record cabinet this summer. I'm sure you'll be seeing a video about that project when I do. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your kind words! Trust me, I once had vinyl storage exactly as you described. This music room has been a long time coming. There are two ways that you can go for inexpensive shelving. The shelves we built here are 3/4" plywood (birch veneer) cut from 4'x8' sheets. We applied a think trim to the outer edges so that the ply layers wouldn't show. Another option is to buy laminated particle board shelving. Such boards are often finished on one edge. Hope that helps get you started!
Thank you very much! The room was a long time coming, and is still being tweaked here and there, but I'm really happy to have made it happen. Thanks for the kind words.
@beninski707 - Thank you very much. The record cleaner demo video is almost done. Haven't even shot the stereo video yet, though. Life keep getting in the way of having fun!
You are a sick sick sick sick man...... I've been "working on" my basement record room for 2 years now and still need to do a few things to get it right. Seems like a never ending quest! Enjoyed the vid.
@dimebagdave77 - What I find really interesting about those SEM photos is the dirt that you CAN see in the grooves. Both photos were supposedly taken of brand new, freshly pressed, virgin vinyl grooves, and yet you can still see some dust particles in there.
Hi there EoloVox, thanks for replying to my comment. I have several concert DVD's and only a couple of music documentaries..I have several cassettes since my truck came with a CD/cassette player. Thank you also for the tip on the album frames, I will have to go to Michael's and check them out. take care
@vinylmaniac - Yep, that sure is an old TV. I'm not sure why I keep it down there because I very rarely use it. You're right that we've got a newer wide-screen in the living room. I've been thinking about getting a nicer TV for the music room but, as you suspected, it's just not a very high priority. When I'm in that room, I'm perfectly content listening to music for as long as I can get away with it! Thanks for watching!
@artofvinyl - It was not an easy decision. I'm still happy with the chairs, though. They're big and comfortable. When are we going to get to see your music room?
I just found this video and your intro video as well! Wow!!! That is a gorgeous listening room you have! Living in Arizona we don't have basements due to the unstable ground out here :( Having lived in Wisconsin I do miss having a basement very much! Someday I will be able to get my own music room once the kids get older and move on with their lives. I love your set up! Very impressive!
I have all of those you mentioned on CD but none on record, it would be nice if i could find them on record y guess i will start searching for them..I even have the "just another band from east L.A on cassette that i bought a looong time ago. I have been to 10 of their concerts, so you could say that i am a big fan of them..they absolutely rock! if you get a chance go see them live.. Best wishes
Thanks for subscribing, and for the compliment! You nailed the Scarab track. Were you asking out of surprise or doubt? (A list of all the tracks sampled is listed in the details below the video, if you click on "Show more." I didn't know if you had seen that before you asked.)
@mrhoffame - Thanks for watching Mr. H. Sorry it took so long to get up here! As you can probably tell, I'm a little persnickety about stuff. Sometimes that really slows me down.
@jcashfan365 - Thanks! Isn't it great to have a space that you can go to be with all your music and shut out the world? I love my music room for that reason, but also have people over to enjoy it with me from time to time. Thanks for watching!
I use Mobile Fidelity inner sleeves. You can usually find them for around $20 per pack of 50. Sometimes less, especially if you buy them in bulk. I used to use a similar sleeve from bagsunlimited but they were too inconsistent with the quality and size. I would often have to throw away handfuls of them because they were too small for a record to fit in or too big to fit in a jacket. The MoFi sleeves are very consistent.
@vinylmaniac - No worries! I knew you were teasing me about the TV, but rightfully so! I'll admit that, at least in my music room, I've spent a lot more money on stereo equipment and music than anything else. I definitely understood what you meant, so don't worry about that at all. Thanks for your kind words, too!
No time like the present to grab some paper and plan the layout of your future music room! It doesn't have to be set in stone; features can change as time goes on. If you get some ideas down while you're still pretty young, you'll know exactly what you want by the time you're ready to move out. Some people even rent two bedroom apartments just to use one of the rooms as a music room.
Thanks. I built my shelves so that the bottom row of records is about 8" off the floor. I've got a few piles on the floor, but those are temporary. Since we live on fairly high prairie land, I'm not too worried about it beyond that.
@dvdude30 - My dad and I have always shared a love of woodworking. It made for a nice project for us to do together, which was cool because we don't see a lot of each other these days. Trouble is, now, I need to build another one! Thanks for the comments.
@C815richard - I've got a Minolta DSLR that may need to be replaced soon, so maybe that's the way I should go. The one I own does not do video and, since Minolta no longer exists as a company, I've been leaning toward a Canon replacement. Thanks for the advice.
@JasonsVinylObsession - Thanks Jason! Don't sell yourself short, though. You've got a great music room! The truth is, I just got lucky when building our addition that we were able to afford to make this happen. Keep planning for your ideal music room and you'll make it happen. As always, thanks for watching!
@MrPlatypus9 - We've only got one cat, but it's still amazing how much dust, fuzz, and hair gets on record albums. I have certainly gotten my money's worth from that record cleaning machine! Thanks for watching!
You either need a stereo receiver or a dedicated amplifier. A phono pre-amp just boosts the phono signal to the receiver or main amp, but isn't powerful enough to drive the speakers. What you need to watch with regard to your phono pre-amp is your stylus/cartridge. Some phono pre-amps handle only "moving magnet" cartridges and some are for "moving coil." (In fairness, a few can literally switch between the two.) Find out if your stylus is MM or MC and then check your phono pre-amp. Make sense?
Most of the DVDs in that rack are either concert DVDs or music documentaries. Any non-music DVD that we have is in our living room with the main TV. I don't have a "collection" of music DVDs because I really don't watch the ones I have all that much. Very few cassettes. Back in the day, I did a lot of home taping to make tapes for the car, etc. Other than that, I've never been into cassettes much. I got the album frames at Michael's, an arts & crafts store. Thanks for watching!
Definitely agree. Most of the Muslimgauze that I have is on CD, and in compilations for that matter. I do have one vinyl record - mid 80s - called 'Blinded Horses.' Of the albums you've picked up, which one do you like the most?
@dimebagdave77 - Thanks for all your kind words. The only Peaches crate that has survived the years with me is one that holds 8-track tapes, of all things. I'd love to find an LP Peaches crate at a flea market or thrift store. Those are even cooler now than they were back in the day.
Very true. That plays a bigger role than most people are willing to admit. I think that's why people turn their back on artists that "make it big." We all want music to call our own. Some do it by seeking out the most obscure things and staking a claim, some do it by striving to be someone's "biggest fan," some do it by trying to amass complete collections of one band or artist, etc. I think it's a trap that we all fall into, to some degree. I really try to keep that in mind, and in check.
Thanks so much! There were supposed to be some renovations in the music room this summer, but so far I haven't gotten to them. When I do, though, I'll be sure to post an update. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Right now, I've got a pair of Mirage OM7s in my system. Prior to that, I was using Vandersteen 1Cs. I love the Vandersteens, but the Mirage speakers are designed for larger rooms. They are omnipolar speakers, meaning that they're also firing out the back, slightly out of phase, in order to reflect more of the sound from the wall behind them. They actually feel pretty perfect for this room. I love 'em!
Thank you, Denise. Yeah, I was MIA for most of November and December. Just not much free time. I hope that doesn't happen again. Thanks for the encouragement!
Ahh, the gear video. You wouldn't believe how long I've been thinking about doing one. Somehow, it just doesn't seem to happen. Part of the problem is that my rig keeps changing. I may be going to demo a new cartridge tomorrow if all goes according to plan. Regarding the turntable recommendations... Are you thinking new or used? What is your price range? Narrow those two factors down and I'd be happy to give you a few recommendations!
@herrdruhl - Thank you. Just the other day, I was trying to remember what we used for the shelves when we built them. I've run out of room for records and need to build at least one more. I know that the wood was 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) A/B grade plywood, in either birch or ash (for strength). The exposed plywood ends were then faced with thin, rounded trim board before I stained all three units. Each unit is 2 feet (0.6 m) wide and, if you're planning to build some, I wouldn't make them any wider.
I love tours. This was awesome. I love how the floor lamps match the frames! The Genealogy of Pop was also really cool looking. YOu built your own cabinets!? wow
Our addition has hardwood floors everywhere except the music room. I chose to carpet that, as well as use acoustic tiles on the ceiling. Both help absorb sound waves and vibrations, so you don't get sound bouncing all over the room. A friend has a music room with hardwood floors and he has spent a lot of money on room treatments to help do what my carpet and ceiling tiles do. You definitely don't want a room where sound bounces off every surface.
This may be a genuine case of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence. I am very envious that you live in a small cottage in the Scottish Highlands. Honestly. My bloodline is almost pure Scots and I've only ever been able to visit for a few weeks. You and I should work out some sort of boarding exchange program!
A very nice music room! And I am also a fan of Talk Talk, but I only know their hits, not their other songs. I have 2 music rooms on top of the house filled with synthesizers and other gear. Also some records, cd's and tapes but my vinyl collection is in another place. Greetz
I hope your surgery went well, Steve! Are you up and about now or still in recovery? Hope you're doing okay. Thanks for checking this out! Did you know that Scott opened up a storefront and is no longer at the flea market?
I sold my Pro-Ject 2.9 (in this video) and I'm currently spinning records on a Nottingham Analogue Space 294. I had a Sumiko Blue Point No. 2 cart on the Pro-Ject and, at first, had a gorgeous Dynavector Karat 17D3 cart on the Nottingham. Unfortunately, the Karat had a cantilever issue, and is now back with its original owner. I'm temporarily using an Acutex M320 so I can still spin vinyl, but definitely working on a more permanent upgrade.
Most prominent is definitely pop/rock, although that (to me) includes everything from singer-songwriters to synth-pop to hard rock and metal, and from the 60s through the present. I've got reasonably healthy collections of jazz, blues, reggae, and world music, plus a little bit of classical music, but all those genres pale in comparison to the pop/rock portion of the collection. How about you?
The biggest advantage that your conservatory has over my music room is all the natural light! Being a basement music room, there's only so much light I can get in there. By the way, I just went back to catch up on your latest videos and each one cut off prematurely. One didn't even start, it just acted like it had played and ended. I figure it might just be a RUclips glitch, so I'll check back again. If no one else has mentioned it, it's probably just a temporary (and isolated) thing.
Very nicely put together video. What a great room too. Watching made me think, there is such a diverse range of tastes/likes in people. Some would dedicate their entertainment room to cinema, while others would have a game room, and you, a music room. That diversity is pretty awesome.
@glowing00cabbage - Thank you for watching. I've said this before, but I think it would be so cool to have a bunch of you folks over for a day-long listening party.
@VinylHarry - It was a long time coming for me, Harry. As cliche as it might sound, though, I just kept the dream alive and seized the opportunity to create this space when it came along. Just keep planning...
@dereckvon - I feel really lucky that we were able to make this a reality, since it had been a dream for so long. It has definitely become my favorite room of the house, but I bet that doesn't surprise you! Record cleaning demo video should show up before too long.
@Afteringboard - Amen to the idea that the delivery system should enhance the music we love so much! I consider myself a kind of "mid-range" audiophile, meaning that I haven't gotten so addicted to upgrading equipment that I spend more money on it than on the music itself. It's probably close to equal, though! Thanks for all your kind words.
@cooper210 - You've got to start somewhere, and it sounds like you've certainly got the passion for it. May you find a turntable and stereo that suits your needs - soon - so you can start spinning those records and more!
ppl like you who are serious about their music are the ppl that us music producers live for.
You are the reason we do what we do. the music industry needs more like you.
Peace!
Rob I am waiting for that video on all the equipment you have. Looks like you got a new turntable!!! Thanks Jim
very nice touch to have those pictures of the "microscopic record grooves" very nice room. Looking forward to seeing your shelf unit update
Thanks for watching and subscribing, Ken! When are you going to start busting out the VC videos?

Great record cabinets !
Great Job
wow!!!!, you have every reason to be so proud of your music room.... it's amazing!
thank you for sharing your space.... great vid :)
@mrhoffame - Thanks for watching Mr. H. Sorry it took so long to get up here! As you can probably tell, I'm a little persnickety about stuff. Sometimes that really slows me down.
Oh man, I'd love to have some beers with you in this room for a day. Must be some amazing gems in there... nice room.
Yes, and a thumbs-up right back to you for being one as well!
Thanks for watching!
I remember those! I'm not sure it was the same make, but I had something like that when I was younger. How cool that you found one!

Thanks for sharing the room, it's quite beautiful. I love seeing the record cleaning machine. It looks like a fantastic setup for listening.
Thanks! I've just recently been planning some major changes down there, too. More on that in another video...

HI DUDE,I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU BACK ON HERE MORE,HOPE ALL IS WELL AND LOVE THE MUSIC PAL
Thank Goodness There's Good Folks Like You That Keep Up With The Preservation Of Real Music And The Vinyl LP Collection
@FuyuAkiWorld - Thank you for including this in the awesomeness! 'Seconds Out' is nothing short of phenomenal.
Thanks Mark! I've been collecting vinyl records since the 70s, so building the room was long overdue.
YOu built your own cabinets!? wow
Thanks Rob! I'm not able to afford any new shelving at the moment, but I will keep the laminated particle board in mind.
I have to admit that I haven't done a system video yet. I keep meaning to, but just don't seem to get it started. It's long overdue. Hopefully soon.
The Talk Talk artwork is magnificent, first time I see somebody sharing this. I'd still ever like to get a big copy of laughing stock as a painting.
Well-said! It's not a competition, quite! It's thus not about ego but about relaxation! Great space, filled with love!
Thanks Maciek! I have to admit that I really do love it down there.
Hi, very nice room, and tastefully done. I was wondering what wood you used to construct your shelving units. Thanks!
WOW! Dude that's the Music room i'm dreaming of!Really cool
PS - What's the tune playing in the background at 12:15? The deep slow burner
@EoLoVoX Very well put! Really nice way of looking at it!
wow very nice! can't wait to have something like that one day. thanks for the tour!
Evan
Thanks for the tour! Just got back into vinyl myself.
@musicman257 - Thank you for the kind words!
@merokodk - Thanks! A cleaning station video has been shot and I'm almost done editing it. "Soon come," as they say in Jamaica. Thanks for watching!
