I speak japanese and my mother language is somewhat close to japanese at least more relatable than any indo-european one. To me the name of crimson mages are weired and kind at the same time. They are like normal japanese names, but with some twist. In a sense of an extra letter or syllable. It makes a silly but warm, elavated feeling. Btw whenever Megumin names something it always resembles to me the japanese word for p'nis. xD
With regards to darkness not Being here, the author often puts some of the main cast to the side, especially when introducing new characters, so that the situation or character has enough space to show their quirks. You'll see another good example later in the season, but also think back to how, when we met darkness--aqua did nothing that whole episode. When we met wiz, it was just aqua and Kazuma. Etc.

Darkness really comes into her own in season 3 imo. You really see how strong she is in her natural settings and how much the others need her. Kazuma no doubts regrets picking megumin over yunyun. 😊
There is a big romance trope for Kazumin down the line in the show and light novel It puzzles me tho how people who watch anime for years still don't know what a lolicon is
An old fart's perspective: First, I am not really into the whole "shipping" thing. That said, the way I see it, Darkness is that eye-candy hottie that as a teenager, shut-in, NEET, Kazuma is instantly attracted to partly because society holds women like her as the ideal. But her personality and kink drive him nuts and not in a good way. Megumin on the other hand is a slow-burn relationship. Her personality and intelligence are closer to Kazuma's. In a reality sort of way, she's the one that once they're in their 20's, he would realize how close they are. And I will just say, start paying closer attention Megumin's behavior this seaaon (especially episode 6), in the movie and season 3.
and here is also one thing to know: Kazuma's into older women. His fetish is either milf or onee-chan type. That's why he often dreamed about Darkness, and also why he fell so easily into Sylvia.
btw anime likes to change novel stuff quite a bit for comedy. sometimes to the detriment of the story. in the novel kazumas snipe kills the frog. also chomusuke does NOT like baths. this even becomes a plot point later (if we ever get s4) so idk why they changed that
