  • How to move a piano Into the back of a pickup truck By yourself.
We often get asked how to load a piano into the bed of a pickup truck. To be clear, we do not recommend moving a piano in the bed of a pickup truck. Strictly because the wheel wells inside the of truck bed make securing a piano difficult. However, due to the overwhelming questions that we have been receiving, we decided to explain how a professional piano mover would do preform this task. This video shows how a single professional piano mover would load a piano into the bed of a pickup truck without a ramp. Please do not try this at home. This is not an easy task, and should only be preformed by trained professional piano movers.

I’m a piano tuner, and have done a great many moves over the years. Yours is the first video that I’ve seen someone actually wrap the piano and put on a grand board properly. I might suggest that there is not a real world situation where one would have to lift and load any piano working alone… that would be a very much worst case scenario! That being said, it was quite a good demo.

Hello Doug! Thank you for watching our video. We appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Our family has been moving pianos for almost 100 years, and proper technique is very important to us. We appreciate you noticing that! That being said, you are correct, this is a much a worst case scenario. That is why we definitely do not recommend anyone try this at home.

@@StumpfMovingandStorage I'm pondering how I'm going to load a 58" antique upright grand into a reefer trailer (big truck) that does not have a lift gate. My first thought was find a truck with a lift gate, load it in that truck, then load from that into the big truck. Is that the best way or do you have another suggestion? I'm pretty sure you aren't in my area. And I'm not putting it into the reefer just to move it. I'm turning a reefer into a tiny home.

@@Growmap Depending on were you are located we could absolutely help you out. We are a local and long distance piano mover, and we have trucks of all shapes and sizes. If our crew is using one of our trucks that does not have a lift gate, they will use a detachable moving ramp also known as a walk-board. We will be making a video explaining that process soon. As for your situation. It is hard to say what to do without seeing what your working with. The idea you suggested is not a bad one if you do not have a walk-board/ramp. @@StumpfMovingandStorage Thank you for responding. I am in the middle of nowhere in SE Oklahoma. U-haul doesn't have lift gates and Pensky's closest lift gate is 70 miles away.
So now my thought is to find a local appliance rebuilder with a lift gate. I need a refrigerator, anyway, so maybe I can talk them into putting my piano, washer and dryer on the trailer while they're here delivering the refrigerator. I'd pay extra of course.
Pushing what is probably a 500-600 lb. piano up a ramp that steep would be a challenge.

The Uhaul has a ramp, I just worry about keeping it straight.
I certainly will not lift the piano except to put the dolly underneath.

As for a truck with a liftgate, you can rent one from Penske or Ryder. You must make sure the liftgate can handle the weight of the piano.

How much would a professional have charged to move the piano 165 miles?
Penske only had a reefer available and I doubt that the insulation did anything beneficial to the center of gravity, but the AC unit above the cab definitely didn't!
My fiancée and I absolutely hated that thing, I drove at least 10 below the speed limit over hills and through canyons.
I needed to use cargo straps to keep the piano from rolling off the lift and broke the dolly!
Mom keeps complaining that the precious piano she left behind is in storage.

Why we strap an upright piano to a piano board is explained in detail in the video. Aside from the reasons listed in the video, there are many different times a professional piano mover would use a piano board when moving an upright piano. The most common would be to move an upright piano up or down stairs. We have been moving pianos for 87 years, since our company was founded in 1936. We make these videos to add transparency to the industry, and to educate the public on the proper professional piano moving techniques used by our highly trained piano movers.
