Have you ever bought a Venus Flytrap or other Carnivorous plant from a big box store? How did it do, is it still alive?

I accidently kept killing flytraps for years. Getting back into the hobby of growing carnivorous plants and found them at Home Depot. I learned a lot more and now they are thriving right now had some flower stalks which I cut off.

I’ve never had one, but always wanted one, so I finally bought one last week at Walmart. I think I will go back and get some more. I had no idea how to care for one so I have been researching everything I can. I had no idea they needed special water, soil, planters and even live food! I’m so glad I didn’t repot it immediately like I had planned to do in regular potting soil, & instead I looked into how to care for it first, otherwise I would’ve killed it! I ordered everything it needs and should be here any day.
Thank you for the information. It helps so much.

I did go buy another one 🥰. And I received all the things I had ordered for these finicky boogers! I hope I can successfully repot them without killing them! I’ve been taking them outside for a few hours a day and they seem to love it. Although, the 1st one had a rough start and all but 3 traps died, but it “seems” to be happy & thriving now. I hope they both survive. 🙏🌱🙏

I had a Venus flytrap when I was a little kid and have wanted another one. Now I'm away at uni and, as I was wandering through a market hall, saw a single, struggling Venus flytrap at a plant stall. You best believe it came home to the flat with me!! Now time to revive the little guy. Thanks for your videos! x

I bought two more today and one of their soil is so dried out I’m soaking it in water now and I clipped all the dead heads off of them. I love my fly traps. The first two that I bought have been eating gnats like crazy the gnats came from my succulent soil lol.

personally, i plant mine in long fiber sphagnum moss, it has like 0 nitrogen or other minerals in it that can kill flytraps, it also holds water really well but drains good as well, which is perfect for flytraps that like super moist growing medium but not waterlogged like pitcher plants and honeydews prefer, just make sure your that if you use sphagnum moss that it doesn't have any added nitrogen or other fertilizers that will kill any carnivorous plant in no time at all

What kind of VFT do you have? Some VFT are really attractive to bugs, while some are not very attractive. Typical VFT are not very good at attracting bugs, but the ones are really good at catching bugs are like VFT "Titan", VFT "Bristle Tooth". Also, you won't get many insects indoor if you have them there.
Edit: Some VFT have non-functional traps too.

I would cut off only the black part since the other part of the leaf can still photosynthesize. That being said, if your VFT has only a few leaves then just wait until the entire leaf turn black. But if you have one that is growing a lot of leaves, then just cut off the black part of the leaves. Otherwise, if you wait until the entire leaf turned black you will have to be careful not to cut the good leaves in a densely packed VFT.
