3 Day Solo Camping Adventure in the Scottish Highlands - Day 2: Heavy Rain & Winds Changed my Plans

  • Day two of this trip was a slog. Seven hours of hiking in the rain and wind is tough no matter how beautiful the terrain. Unfortunately, this forced me to alter my route a bit which just meant more hiking. Although, that’s the benefit of bringing a lightweight packraft on a trip like this 👍. Fortunately, the rains did subside in the afternoon for the toughest part of the hike through an unmarked mountain pass I needed to traverse to get to the next Loch. Decided to make this video all about this trek (it felt like its own beast) and save the paddle to day 2’s incredible campsite and the final hike and packraft out for the last video in this series as it provided its own challenges. Hope you enjoy the video.

      The hiking portion of this day was around 11 miles (not including the paddling which you’ll see in part 3). The length of the hike combined witb the wind and the rain made for a pretty tough day so I just decided to make it its own video. Definitely more pretty views in the last part of the video 👍. Thanks for watching

    Goin Solo, you never disappoint. Thank you for providing the best 45 minutes of enjoyment and entertainment I've experienced this week. Really felt for you on this one - 7 hours of rain and wind sounds brutal, but you powered thru it! That unmarked mountain pass looked tough, but the views defo made it worth it. Glad the weather cleared up a bit for the hardest part. Can’t wait to see the next leg with the packraft and final hike. Thanks for sharing!

      It was definitely one of the toughest hikes I’ve had in some time. I was very happy the weather cleared for that portion of the hike. Although unmarked, the hike in the valley wasn’t too bad and it was just stunning with those cliffs. Working on part three now it should be out by Friday 👍. Hope you have a nice week!

The worse the weather, the more entertaining though. When I am camping and it is raining I usually collect rainwater from the tent canvas. I do this by tying a short rope/paracord at the one of the corners at the bottom the tent canvas, usually connected to one of the tie off points on the tent. Put a bottle under the knot and put the rope/paracord inside of the bottle. The water will gladly take the rope as a guide down into the bottle and in heavy rain the bottles fill up fast.

    Beautiful, and a long slog, but worth it for those views - what was your step count that day, I wonder? Thank you for putting the maps in. I spent time with Day 1 pouring over the maps and tracking where you were on google - was good to see the maps in day 2 and see I was right! Hope you won't let this experience (midges, rain) put you off going to Scotland (and esp the highlands) altogether. Its a beautiful country... just avoid August, as you know now! Did you see the story on the BBC news website recently about Scotland's remotest pub, takes a 3 day trek (or a boat ride) to reach it? That's at the Old Forge in Inverie which you go to from Glenfinnan, a bit south of where this was filmed. Apparently a 'handful of people a day' attempt it. That might be too many for you - but worth a look. Google should find the story if you didn't see it already.

      Scotland is just too majestic for the midges to ever keep me away. Although the midges get even worse at the end of day two. Complaining about them just mentally helps in the moment 😂👍. The hike for this day ended up being around 11 miles. I had to double back at one point when I realized I couldn’t get on the loch because of the weather. Didn’t show that in the video. Then I still had a 3-4 mile paddle on the loch that I get on at the end of the video. That part will be included in part 3. I’ll definitely look up the pub 👍. Hope you have a nice weekend.

    Good vid. worth it for the views looking back and thru the pass. Someday take the trail over to the right side instead of going around the foot of the cliff to the lock. Lot's to see once in the area. Now on the level, only with a headwind. Did you get the FUJi fixed from the drowning you gave it. All good. Next time.

    Have you ever tried Fjallraven tents? I had several Hillebergs and now only have Fjallraven. I would be interested in your opinion of them.

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  12 дней назад

      As you can probably tell from my clothing and most of my packs I’m a big fan of Fjallraven. I’ve seen their tents, but I’ve never personally slept in them. Once I find something I typically like, and most importantly trust, I tend to just stick with it. That’s why I continue to use my Hillebergs tents and my Fjallraven packs and clothing. Many of the Fjallraven tent designs are very similar which I like, just at a lighter pack weight which is nice! But pack weight is not something I’m normally concerned with. I’d love to give one a try at some point, but I most certainly don’t need to buy any more tents at the moment 😅. It’s a bit of an addiction for me. Really appreciate your comment. ATB

    Just curious, as a North American native, how do you get to pick areas to hike and camp? Are there designated camping reserves/areas? Do you get to pick an unpopulated area and hike off into the wilderness?

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  10 дней назад

      I look at a lot of topo maps to plan my routes and find areas to hike and camp. Most of the places I go are far from people in national parks or nature reserves. On this Scotland trip I didn’t actually see anyone for three days which was great. It is also legal to wild camp there so you can camp where you want. Really appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
