This video is very useful to me. There are a lot of videos for newer version dryers but not for this model. I could not figure out where it opens from without damaging. I will try to replace my belt using this video. Thanks a lot.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Of course, my dryer (maybe 8-10 years old) started making a 'banging' noise as my daughter was headed back to college, my wife was going in for major surgery, etc. Considered calling a repair guy, but figured 'there has to be a youtube video out there!' Got the wife home, resting in bed, figured it was time. Turned out to be a screw that holds one of the 'fins' inside the drum, about to fall out, rubbing the side of the cabinet. Thanks again!
One of the three plastic pieces inside the drum of my dryer had loose screws and actually fell off. Without your video showing how to remove the door and front frame and pop the top loose I would still be trying to figure out how to repair that part. It is all back together and works good as new. Thanks a lot.
Jeff, Thanks for the video. I tore down my dryer for repair today following your instructions. No issuses at all. fixed my problem and the dryer is back in service. Without your video, I'd still be trying to figure out how to ge it apart. I also changed the hinges on the door so it opens from the opposite side. Thanks again.
Oh My Goodness!! I can't believe I fixed my Neptune Dryer. It use to take 3-5 hours to dry my clothes (they would be hot and still wet). But now, after cleaning all the build-up lint within the dryer and in the vent, a full load of clothes dry in less than 25 minutes . Thank you, Thank you so very much for saving me a ton of money. Had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have throw away the washing machine (it wouldn't spin); You're a great teacher, Jeff.
Thanks for the kind words! Please check out my other videos and let me know if you need any other assistance and I will see what I can do for you. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Thanks so much, I followed your directions and fixed. the only difference is MDE3000AYW roller use snap pin. Now my MDE3000AYW work great again. I had this dryer since 1997.
Fascinating! Wound up replacing the belt, felt, rollers, roller axles, both teflon rests. Also cleaned the roller for the ?clutch pulley and regreased. Really, the dryer probably only needed to be cleaned. I think the dryer's screeching, squealing sound on my mgd5500aww was probably from some metal lint/garbage that got between the rollers and the felt. After ?14 years I was happy to replace that stuff but it was all actually in pretty good condition. Great dryer now in renewed great shape! Thank you very much for the video!
Hi Jeff, just a note to let you know how helpful your video is. I replaced the rollers and belt with ease. The actual problem turned out to be the Drum Glides though. The machine was making a "Chains Rattling" sound due to metal against metal. I ordered new glides and a rivet gun (about $16 total) and while waiting for the parts to arrive, I used Stick On Felt Strips for a temporary fix, they worked great. I have now replaced the glides and the machine is quieter than it has ever been, and I wont have to worry about the belt or rollers wearing out for some time. Thanks again for your great video. You saved me hundreds of dollars.
Hi Stephen, yes, the drum glides can wear over time as well. I'm glad I could help save you some cash! Don't forget to replace your door latch wax motor if you have a timer knob (non digital) based Maytag Neptune. The original faulty brown tipped wax motor will fail and damage your machine control board. See neptunehelpsong dot com for a video that will explain the failure and which models to look out for. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Great video and many thanks! Like others I was skittish but went for it with your video. I found the belt and rollers were fine but the small whelel underneath that helped the belt loop was squeaking. I WD 40'd it and was all set. However I notice ltaor in use that I had no heat. My dryer is propane driven and so I found another video that showed me I had broke the igniter (easy to do) it taking all apart. Ultimately, it was a $41. Part and easy to replace.
Hi Michael, Thank you for commenting... Let me know when your Neptune sounds like a jet plane taking off so you can change your bearings. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Hi Riley, You're welcome! Let me know when your Neptune washer sounds like a jet plane so you can replace your bearings and seal. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Jeff, great video. since the rollers are accessible and i can feel the back of the rollers and the 1/2 inch nut before removing the tub assembly, can the removal step be skipped and the rollers changed without having to remove the assembly? thanks
Great video. Using dryer with a broken lint screen was a bad idea. A sock, yes the dryer ate a sock, made its way into the dryer bowels and jammed up the blower . Thanks to your video I was able to fix the dryer myself.
Jeff, Thanks for the video. One of my drum slats came loose and your video showed me how to lift the top, so I could repair the paddle. Prob saved me $100 or More. I owe you a beer :)
My only suggestion is to replace ALL of the rollers. They all have the same amount of wear and you don't want to go back to a customers home to replace the other rollers in a month or so, as it looks bad on you for not getting the job completely done the first time. Great video!
Good idea! Right now I can't think of a reason it would not work and it would save some time. Try it and let me know if there were any issues. Thank you!
Thanks, Jeff. I had to disassemble the dryer in order to repair a loose paddle inside the drum. Found the original screw inside and made the repair in shorter time than I could have found the manual.
Jeff, Thanks for the video. One of my drum slats came loose and your video showed me how to lift the top, so I could repair the paddle. Prob saved my $100 or More. I owe you a beer :)
Thanks for the clear directions on how to do this. You mentioned using a hammer to hold something back. I didn't see that in the disassembly directions. I'll look at this again carefully.
Hi Bernard, You're welcome! I was referring to the idler arm assembly as it is helpful to use the hammer handle to hold it back so you can wrap the belt around idler pulley. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Steve, I have the same "banging" noise on the left side of my Neptune dryer!! How much of the dryer did you have to disassemble in order to find and tighten that screw? I'm afraid once I get it all part, I'll never figure how to put it back together .... Wish I could watch the video in reverse for that!! LOL!!!
Fantastic video, I wish I'd found it sooner! I have a similar model, the Maytag MDE6000AYW. My rollers, while suspected as being faulty had a snap ring in the front of each so I did not need to remove the back wall support structure nor the heater tube to replace them. Unfortunately I still have a squeal/squeak in the general area and have NO idea how to fix, I've replaced just about all the replaceable common failure moving parts that move. I've got a video clip I can upload. Your thoughts on the noise source would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Mike, If you have still a squeak after replacing the rollers and belt I would check the idler pulley then the front teflon bearing pads. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Great explanation. Mine is the digital version and today I have to find the screws that fell off one of the paddles. Your instructions will make this an easy fix for me. Thanks!
Thanks, Jeff for the video. I have a Maytag Neptune DC stacked unit with an upper drying cabinet, and a lower tumble dryer, Model MCG8000. I could find nothing about disassembly, so I decided to somehow get the lint out of the lower tumble dryer with no directions or diagram. I took out the upper drying cabinet drying trays, and now the screws holding the control panel for both units was viewable. There are five hex screws that once removed, allows the control panel to come forward and I then laid it on the top of the tumble dryer drum seen from inside the upper drying cabinet. Once removed, the four small sheet metal screws were visible for the front panel of the tumble dryer below, and once I removed these screws, the front of the lower tumble dryer panel fell forward. I disconnected the one clip wire, and pulled the front panel up off the 2 slide clips at the bottom of the panel, and now the lint area could be cleaned. This was so full that I had to use a small kids shovel to scoop out the packed lint and dirt, then a thorough vacuuming had to be done below the tumble dryer in all the accessible places--wiring, bottom of drum, etc. It was a total mess, and it surprised me that no fire had ever started since the gas pilot light is close to all this lint. I must admit that this had not been done for 9 years, so I also had to clean a 9 foot long vent tube from my roof as well. Do you think that these directions, and pictures would be of any value at RUclips? I can video tape the process, but all the lint and dirt is gone, and the lint covering the wires as well. Thanks for your reply, and others may find my work of interest, and need it to disassemble their Neptune DC stacked dryer unit. Thom
Hi Jeff, my Neptune MDG5500AWW will and will not start intermittently. When it is running , it is perfect... but when it does not want to start it will just not start,,, I will unplug let it, let it sit from a minute to a few days then replug in and it may start... When it is not going to start the light on start button is not lit.... when it is going to start the button is lit.... it is not associated with over heating because the dryer can be cold, but the light on the starter button is not lit...
Hello, sounds like it could be the motor . Does it seem to start more reliably with a lighter load ( or no load) in dryer? Send me your email and I will send you a PDF service manual link. Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Used this to repair my dryer today. Many thanks! Only feedback I would give is to be a little more detailed on how to reattach the belt. I found another video for that. I appreciate that you filmed each step along the way. Great job!
Hi Jeff , thanks this is a great video although, I don't understand how I am to put the belt around the idler & motor. I hope you see this before I get to that step, lol. Diane
Hi Diane, Yes, the belt takes some patience when re installing because you cannot see what you are doing... Keep me in mind if you need help on your Maytag Neptune washer as well! Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
thanks for the video.. it was very informative, detailed, and helpful. I was able to take my neptune dryer apart today in about 10 mins mostly due to this video. My dad was also an appliance repair man and contracted installer for General Electric/Hotpoint, so I have some experience with appliance repair, but again this video was very helpful and definitely the best help I found online while trying to repair my dryer. just to add more info that's not necessarily necessary, Our dryer was making an awful metal dragging upon metal noise and out clothes were being caught up in the back felt seal... Upon disassembling the dryer (thanks to guidance via this video) I found one of the rollers was extremely loose, almost to the point of completely being dislodged from it's proper location. Sorry for going on and on. But this video was very helpful until I went to reassemble my dryer, which in theory is the reverse of dis-assembly. My only issue is with the belt tension/routing. That could have been explained more clearly. Which way does the belt route through the motor pulley and idler pulleY? No problem, I'll figure it out.. Just saying that the video was very wonderful and informative, just lacked one key element/info... But I'm still stuck at getting my belt tension and routing correct so I might find another issue, but I doubt it. This explained very clearly the structure and build of the machine and how to assemble and re assemble. Just wish I could figure out this belt routing... I'm sure I'll get it in another attempt or two.. Thanks for the video though, seriously... It really helped me out a lot... Probably saved me 3-5 hundred dollars in service fees..
Bre Lee Hi, you're welcome! Let me know if/when you have any more issues with your Neptune's and we'll see if we can figure it out... Jeff Hartman "The Neptune Man"
Very helpful! The idler pulley had nearly froze up in mine. Rollers and belts were okay. Unfortunately I had only ordered 2 new rollers and belt, exactly the things that didn't break :)
Thanks, This was helpful. Luckily for me, I didn't have to go any further in the video then to see the front panel removed. My drum was suddenly making a terrible noise as it rotated. I thought the drum was out of alignment due to a failing roller, and was scraping the back side. It turns out that a screw that holds the fins on the inside of the drum came loose, and it was sticking out far enough that it started to scrape the sides of the enclosure. I couldn't have been more happy that it wasn't something more serious.
My husband and I just used your video step by step and replaced the rollers and belt on our Maytag Neptune! It worked, it really worked!!! Thank you so much for posting this!
