Here in southwest Pa, my friend bought acreage of old growth forest that had not Been touched since probably times of the settlers. This was over 30 years ago and I remember when helping him clear space for his future house , he had flat tires constantly ! He carried A case of fix a flat around with him! I would hear air hissing and then he would yell, damn hawthornes! I would not drive back on his property to avoid them, I parked and walked in. That being said he just passed away and I ve been helping his widow and daughters keep up the acreage. I haven't ran across any Hawthorne . Did he eradicate them all or were they just an under story tree that receded when cut back? I brush mow with my old Gravely and haven't run in to any long thorns.Do they grow into a larger tree? Its beautifully property with deer turkey black bear and every kind of hardwood tree growing. Many dog woods and some native holly. Just wondered where the legendary tire flattening Hawthorne went.

Ordered one to plant here in northern AZ. I use this as medicine so hoping to have my own source.

Do you use it as a bone medicine? Particularly arthritis? Up in Ojibwe territory on Manitoulin Island I was taught to use it for such and so I traded for some of the bark and I gave it to an elderly lady with arthritis and it really helped her. It also helped my children’s father with an old back injury

@@mfnryland1920 that is awesome to know! I’ve actually used it to help improve my blood pressure…which it has helped me to come off of one of my bp medications. Interesting enough though during this same time I started using this I had horrible back pain that prevented me from being able to sleep at night and after a year of taking this my back pain was gone. I thought it was due to other things but now it sounds very likely the Hawthorne tincture was helping with that as well! I didn’t know the bark was good medicine - I have used the leaves and berries. That’s great to know!

What causes the beries to drop all summer, from the time first developing to time to pick the berries? Have tried spraying and also cutting back for air ventilation.

Love Hawthorne jelly. Easy to make too and full of antioxidants

The thorns are brutal. I was poked through my gloves while cutting the tree up. Very painful and I can't move my wrist or use my hand. The thorns may have bacteria as a defense mechanism. I have a pretty serious allergic reaction now. I'm in Michigan

Beautiful trees and the birds love them. But, I do not recommend planting them near your lawn, as the thorns will find their way into your inflated mower tires...
