    Old Man Alert: I've been watching F1 since the early 80's and to be honest, a lot of it hasn't changed. I'd argue there is simply more exposure. There has always been drama and politics in the sport. That being said, the draw of F1 in America has always been up and down. We are certainly enjoying a boom right now with American popularity, I don't think this would've happened without first finding a stable home in COTA. America has the unfortunate honor of having more failed race venues than any other country. Under the ownership of Liberty Media and with the success of Drive to Survive, F1 has finally found the formula (HA!) to keep American fans invested.

    • @EvLSpectre
      @EvLSpectre 17 дней назад +2

      Thank god COTA is within the FIA regs Sucks we can't have Sebring. That airport section would wreck the cars. But I also wish we could go back to Hock, Nurgburg, Kyalami and Sepang. But yea, I have been following from the early 2000s, Probably 04 or 05. It has always had politics and drama. I openly admit I am a Max fan. He drives to the absolute limit, and does push the rules, but you have to. Schumi, Montoya, Villneuve, Senna, heck... Prost and Mansell. Equal in aggressiveness, yet they are all praised as hero drivers. I don't know to much of the politics as much as I do now, as you said its more public now. Was it about the same treatment as Max gets now? I am willing to bet in the near future when Max moves to WEC he will be hailed as a hero as the previous era drivers.

      I'm surprised that David didn't talk more about the drama aspect of F1, I'm also part of "old man" gang since I remember watching and rooting for Senna when I was just a kid. It's always been that the drama OFF the track and the human stories are just as interesting as the actual racing itself.
      I'm sure there are a lot of opinions on the whole Cadillac/Andretti drama and about an American team just wanting to join F1. It still is very much a "sport" of the elites.

    Its cheap, SUPER RELATABLE, especially in this economy in the US at least, and everyone can make it challenging in their own way but still keep itoriginal and unique with mods, car choice AND how MUCH you CHOOSE to spend on that $2000 budget and possibly win. 2005 Indy race was the most embarrassing moment in F1. The teams running the Michelin tires were told by Michelin not to race as the tires were unsafe and they couldn't guarantee the driver's safety if they chose to race anyway. Not sure if thats an actual boycott. Its not like the teams didn't want to race but they just couldn't due to unsafe conditions. The 2 Ferrari cars lapped the remaining cars at least twice.

  • @shoryuag
    @shoryuag 17 дней назад +5

    Number one reason it's not just the car: circumstances occur that require the driver to MAKE the car do a certain strategy in order to win. Part of Merc's dominance was because Lewis could drag the life of a set of tyres out forever, even while they felt dead. So, they'd overcut the other teams and drive away. Max is required for consistent performance from RB cars of the past 4 seasons. The Michael was required to make Ferrari's 4-stop strategy work in France 20 years ago. That's all not to mention Lewis driving Max's tyres off during a 3 stopper in Hungary in 2019, forcing Max into an unwinnable situation. That can only happen with fast, accurate, consistent, unshakable drivers with a cutthroat approach at the right times. Valterri, Gasly, Albon, Checo, and Rubens couldn't do/be that; if they could, we'd be talking about them instead.

    Living down the road from Road Atlanta and having attended races since yearly since 2007, I find IMSA very engaging and interesting as a car lover. You get crazy access to the paddock and drivers. All those brands represented on track are well represented in the Car Corrals - Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Dodge, Acura, Mazda, Audi, AMG - it's kindof insane how much there is for any fan to appreciate and root for - and they race all over the U.S.

    I've started watching F1 back in 94, and though I didn't really follow it for several years, once Max got back in I've been watching it again,
    part of what really hurt F1 in the US was the 2005 Indianapolis grand prix, where due to a tire war (1 of the brands couldn't guarantee the drivers safety) only 6 out of 20 cars actually started the race,
    the other problem I see is the superlicense points system, it's a lot harder to gain the right amount of SL points in indycar compared to for example any of the feeder series (F2, F3, F4 etc) which doesn't make any sense to me since in indycar the driver level is far higher than in any of the feeder series.
    another thing that makes F1 so different compared to other series, everyone develops their own car and there are very few parts actually interchangeable

    It's an arms race at 300kph. Most series have deep regulations and balance of performance, or the cars are identical.
    In F1, everything needs to work as a well oiled machine. Strategy has to be spot on, the car quick and reliable, drivers take every opportunity and work together, engineers and drivers give input needed to make the car faster. All this has to happen all the time or you fall down the order.

    This is how I see f1. For me it is the peak of automotive technology being pushed to its limits. The pressure on the drivers to perform is so intense it makes it interesting.
    They change the layout of the engines and cars every 4 years or so. They try things sometimes they hit like the V10 days and other things like the 4cyl turbo engines with anti lag and drs etc not so much. But they have to try things and mess around with new technologies that will eventually trickle down into consumer cars for the most part.
    So what you and I are seeing is the absolute limits of automotive technology. And that makes it fun for me to watch. I don't get invested in the driver drama and all the behind the scenes bullshite they go on with I'm here for the cars.
    Perfect example is Mercedes and their dominant run. They split the turbo in half, put the front section on the front of the block and the compressor side on the rear of the block with a long shaft through it . This design basically made them have 0 turbo lag and they dominated because of this design. Nothing could keep up with them speed wise. Everyone was chasing them for years, many a meeting was had to try ban the design etc because their car was just on another level. The current season with the new layout they have been struggling. So you can have dominant cars season to season end up not being so dominant due to the other cars catching up design wise.
    But they were inside the specs they just thought of it differently.
    Porsche has now started using this turbo technology in their road cars and the gt rs cars are so damn fast due to the 0 lag issue. We will see this technology come down the pipe eventually to everyday cars.
    Stuff like over boost and turbo bleeding etc all came from f1. DRS is now being used on a bunch of cup cars and production racing cars...the next step will be consumer cars.
    That's why I love f1. They push the limits sometimes good and sometimes it doesn't work out for them. The things that work tend to trickle down eventually into the cars we buy. It takes 10 years or so but it's the reason I like to watch. The engineering and design to inch out every bit of speed and grip.

    F1 is reality TV. That's a great way of putting it. But it's also what worries me about F1. I think it's really important to know where the line is between sport and entertainment, because without that, either we get another Abu Dhabi '21 moment where sport was sacrificed for entertainment value, or you get a dominant season where Max fairly wins every race but no one wants to watch.
    I have the most enjoyment when I have a healthy blend of fair sportsmanship and entertaining storylines. But honestly, as an F1 casual, when I watch a race I'm just here for the ride.

    6:00 no, they do not share the blame, I’m neither a max or lando fan but the F1 rulebook clearly states that a driver cannot move under breaking, during that crash we can see max choosing an inside trajectory going into the corner, so lando chose the external line, and then mid braking max suddenly moves to the left hitting lando. F1 has strict rules and they are important for understanding what’s going on and who’s at fault during races, to confirm this fact max also got a penalty for that move

    To say Lawrence just "came in and bought Aston Martin F1 for his son" is kinda wild, and really borders on just a blatant lie. Lawrence bought a Force India team that was literally days away from insolvency, with no buyers lined up. In all likelihood, with how greedy the teams are about not giving up their pieces of the pie to let Andretti in, we could genuinely only have 9 teams currently on the grid. Also, Lawrence's investment in Aston Martin, plays no small part of the brand's current turnaround, as Aston Martin wasn't doing well either, prior to 2020.
    My point is, don't view Lance as taking away a driver's seat. View it as Lawrence providing an additional seat. I'd rather have 19 drivers and Lance, then 18 drivers.

    • @collincreeden2862
      @collincreeden2862 16 дней назад +1

      However people can still be mad that the only reason he has that seat is because of his dad. Any other driver would have been fired for under performance and Lance makes $3m a year to be a driver who can't keep up with his teammate. He also states that F1 is not a career for him (I know Max has said something similar but he has the skill to be worth what he is paid) and he is taking a seat from the talented drivers in F2 that may never get a shot in F1 due to that relationship. Also you can still argue if he didn't buy the failing team, his son probably wouldn't be in F1 anymore so he did buy the failing team so his son could still race lol

I'm sure Alonso keeps racing, so thre's even less likelihood of more talented F2 driver coming in. What Lance gets paid, whether he really evens wants to race, or his on track performance is irrelevant. That extra seat is still there.

    Im an old head & I personally find Formula1 to be rather inaccessible, expensive as all hell when in comparison to watching anything IMSA related; to include the Rolex24 & 12Hrs of Sebring. More expensive than the Daytona 500. Definitely more expensive than watching a live drift event (grassroots or not). I've had other people who I've spoken with tell me the exorbitant prices they would pay to watch F1 live in Vegas or Miami this past year. Segueing with cost; it is certainly a 'rich man's sport' to say the least. Look at how much Red Bull spends on their F1 team in comparison to Hendricks motorsport in Nascar or RTR regarding drifting. Then look at what it costs to attend those events. Mom & Pop w/their two kids probably can't afford that average price of almost $1200 a ticket. Therefore it's difficult to get a younger generation into that type of racing in comparison to other brands of motorsport with four wheels.

And I mean hell one of my fav racing movies involving F1 is 2013's Rush. And I did play a bit of F1 Grand Championship on the N64. Drivers are changed during the season, and team members are fired if not performing to expectations. Max Verstappen is clearly the best driver since Louis Hamilton. Hamilton is old now but still does well. I think Max will go down as a legend in the sport, and Hamilton will be more like Schumacher. A great driver that also always had the best car. Sena was like Max because of how he drives the car. It's hard to explain, but the number of wins doesn't always mean legendary status. That's my opinion, but Max's performance during the rest of this season may change my mind.

    @1:30 This is Formula 1 and motorsport in general. This is the answer. There is no favourite driver. The whole point of F1 has and always will be the constructors championship. It is whichever team produced the best car by formula and the best car for the driver. Who that driver is? No motorsport fans care. We know who the best drivers are and whoever's 8th in the "driver's championship" could've easily been first had their constructor performed as well and produced the same car as #1. No motorsport fans have a "favourite" driver, they just like more than others in the top tiers, usually purely because of their personality.
    This concept is incompatable with America's celebrity obsession which got hooked into with DTS, and subsequently we see the massive uptick of F1 popularity in the US, even though the sport has been like this for decades. The US market has been finally tapped. It's not motorsport they care about, it's celebrities, drama, and a fast-paced environment for it all to happen on. Excellent for revenue.
    Have you watched the sport as long as I have, you would have seen all the phases of everyone backing someone for WC, then by the time they got their third, everyone hates them. Tall Poppy Syndrome. This happened to Max most recently, Hamilton before, Vettel, before that, Shuey before that... so on and so on... These are not fans of the sport, just fans of an individual's drama.

    Max's dominance is similar to Schumacher's. It's manufactured by the team because of his once in a generation (methinks) talent.
    Lewis on the other hand never had a weak teammate nor was he number one.
    F1 is like that though. It's the fastest car that wins because they usually have the best drivers.
    Max was penalized because of his reputation.

It was something we looked forward to not only to cheer on our countrymen, but because the sound, the competition and the drivers were great. Speaking of the drivers, they were much more likeable as public figures, they knew how to be professional on the track, and in front of the cameras. F1 was held so high that it was common for men, women and even kids to discuss race events or general opinions about the sport as a casual topic of conversation, like Americans do with football, baseball or hockey. I guess part of this feeling I have is nostalgia because a F1 race on a Sunday was a nice way to enjoy a churrasco with the family, but a lot of things beyond F1 doesn't seem as good as they used to be. Maybe I'm just too old now and I rather watch a Honda Fit and a Ford fiesta go at it in SCCA B-spec😂

      But what made it worth it back then was that it was nationally televised. Everyone could watch. And when it switched to cable, because almost everyone had cable at the time it remained highly accessible. Bo it is not like that. You have to be an F1 fan to watch F1. As a multi decade F1 that has attended US F1 races. First was the first Indy F1 race while in college. Lewis and Max fans are more alike than they want to admit. I'm not watching the TV shows and it is one of the things driving me away. Currently I don't have a favorite as the drivers aren't really drawng me to pull for one and the teams all have their flaws. I hate that the price to attend a race is so much more than it used to be. My last was the first at COTA. Ticket and hotels priced me out of the second COTA race.
    There is some truth in the "it is the car not the driver" but not the whole truth. In my opinion Lando, Russell, and Lewis could win a championship in the Red Bull assuming Max was not at Red Bull.
    I'm not a big Red Bull fan but Mercedes is the biggest complainers currently not long ago by F1 standards Red Bull was a young back marker team. McLaren had their own scandal of stealing tech resulting in a multi million dollar or Euro fine. Ferrari manages to give away races they should win. F1 has it all without turning it into reality TV. The biggest question or story in F1 isn't Lando vs Max or Lewis breaking his slump, it is where is Newey going.
    Thank you! Max and Lando both deserved penalties. Bridgestone owns Firestone but a valid point. However, it was not F1's first time at the track. Michelin shoud have designed a better tire. I agree with the rule of not changing tire brands as the tire manufacturers don't make enough tires for the team to switch weeks out and certainly not race weekend. I went the next year to Indy thinking it was going to be the last USGP for many years.
