Thoroughly enjoyed this masterclass. At first I thought what a crying shame hardly anyone is in attendance but then I realised how much better it is for it; we're simply watching an incredibly talented pianist having a genuinely constructive lesson with one of the all time great pianists as opposed to the usual 'bow to the master celeb-fest' that masterclasses so often are. It helps that Goode is so refreshingly down to earth and unpretentious; also that Yundu Wang is a staggeringly good pianist.

Most performers treat this work (especially the second movement) as though each note were a separate funeral (an expression I once read on RUclips). Goode points out that it has to keep moving so that the beautiful melodic content has continuity.

The performance by Yundu Wang was absolutely superb. As great as Richard Goode undoubtedly is I felt that he should have acknowledged this a little more. After a performance ;like that I was not interested in the least in Goode's remarks. In fact they seemed to me to be simply splitting hairs.

It would have been nice if Goode could have demonstrated more generosity of spirit and congratulated her on a remarkable performance and why should she change anything? Why should she play it like someone else does? I would hav e preferred it if Goode had simply said "Your performance is superb. I have nothing to add."

I have to agree with you here. My piano teacher trained at the guildhall, and I get kinda the same sort of thing...no praise afterwards, just straight to work. I don't think they mean ill at all, but sometimes it is nice to hear I'm doing SOMETHING right 😁

Unfortunate they didn't mic him so we could understand what he's saying. Every Schiff masterclass does that well.

My gawd. The smallest gesture , tension and release Sustained tension! More thanfingers, arms, torso, stomach . Meaning . Now I know most of us don't even know what we're hearing . You must first be a great listener who had a great , knowledgable teacher or have genius. I can let go of playing now. I've seen so many masterclasses Schiff, Perahia, Pires but this really gave me some insight into the necessities in playing Beethoven. If I can just more fully here what intelligent pianists have to say: for me that will be a great gift. Musicians know Richard Goode is special. Now I know why . I've known this sonata since I raided the LosAngeles public library of course none of my teachers ever assigned it to me. The Cortot student who gave me op. 90 must have known I was retarded or maybe he himself couldn't impart much. Doesn't matter. Imagine how some of these guys got there. Heart and courage! Im hearing so much closer to this world Beethoven created. What could this man tell us about Boulez 2nd Sonata! I must find his recital programmes! He's an American genius !

After hearing Goode one realizes he is right! So now I will expect the major musical idea to be expounded BECAUSE IT IS IN THE MUSIC AND IS BEETHOVENS IDEE PROFUNDE ! But is it possible that there can be other ways that have validity and logic like the beautiful distortions someday absurdities nonsense of Pogorelich or FazilSay or SamsonFrancois? Must listen to Brendel, RusselSherman , Yudina(herSchubert last Sonata could change the world),Pires, Curzon,!!!Solomon,Uchida Hofmann'sWaldstein we have but? Serkin!!!Schnabel??? AnbieFischer,.EdwinFischer,Backhaus,Geiseking etc.all the great players I've grown up with .
