Hello Wisely, hello Martin, thank you very much for putting so much effort into this video. Especially extremly helpful after there is no BMW-i3-configurator anymore...
Another great informative video Martin. I would really recommend anyone contemplating watching if they are contemplating buying either a new or used i3. Perhaps sometime, for those considering whether to go for an earlier (used) car you can produce a clip on the pros and cons of the Range Extender variant. When I came to spec my second i3 (an s) I went for all the same options and would do the same again. Although (excuse the pun) I Wisely spec’d the professional SatNav on my first car I regret not optioning the LED headlights as the original standard halogens were very poor. As you explained both the larger screen and LED lights became standard with the refreshed (LCI) car in late 2017. I believe the winter pack became standard very early in production as I had an early 2015 car (ordered 6 months before) which had heated seats as standard. I never used the Park Assist on my first i3 but find the camera very useful reversing up to charging points and into my garage. It was a bit of a bonus therefore to just be able to spec the camera at a lower cost when I came to order the s. Personally I felt I could live without the front parking sensors but it may be different if you park regularly on city streets. The sunroof in comparison with that on my previous MINI’s is a disappointment because the glass area is quite small and it doesn’t move back far enough to fully open the apertures. It does however lighten the interior so it is an option I would definitely look for if I wanted the Suite (full leather) interior. The light headlining on all cars and the generous light area do not make the interior of the i3 as gloomy as on some cars. The feature I have though come to value over time is the adaptive cruise control. I think initially I was taken by the tech and to be truthful the camera based system does not always want to engage (particularly in low sunlight) and can get caught out by park cars but on longer runs, specifically on motorways and busy A roads it makes driving even less stressful by automatically moderating the cruise controls speed. If you go for this option, and whether engaged or not, the current speed limit will always be displayed in the instrument binnacle in front of the driver. I also use it to check my speed in urban 20 mph limit areas where it is very difficult to limit the car’s speed because in the i3 you get very little perception of how fast you are going. I continue to enjoy my Lodge interior - which is subtly different on the LCI cars - because it combines the quality look of leather with the comfort of a wool fabric. The leather stitching on the lower facia also adds to the quality ambiance. One option that BMW have recently introduced - but limited to just 2000 cars - is the Unique Forever Edition. This is a little more than an special edition as it is a pack with a number of bundled desirable options like the Suite interior at an overall cost less than if spec’d individually. Unlike most other special editions with a fixed specification you can still add unbundled options such as the sunroof. It could however be that this edition has now sold out. I know colours are very much a personal choice but I am not keen in the Fluid Black as dirt and stone chips are more obvious. I think the white looks particularly good on the i3s because it contrasts well with the greater black sections.
I am a BMW i3 maniac and I just bought my 4-th one -- the 1-of-2000 series which is supposed to have all the options. What a surprise to see there is no "finger writing on the rotary control knob". All my 3 previous cars had this. Is it an option?? Which code is it? Can I exchange the knobs between 2 cars ... successfully?
There is a little box under the drivers side rear seat that controls that, our previous i3 had the pro nav but it didnt work either, and for some reason that box was unplugged... plugged it back in and it worked as expected
Dang, this man knows his i3 info! I just bought a used 2018 so all his videos are of major help. Btw, love not having to go to the gas stations with their god awful lines.
Martin, thanks for this. I’ll use it for making my choice later this year after the v40 has gone. Your work is a credit and an attraction to the garage brand.
I’ve got a 18 i3s that has all options but with base interior. If I had ordered it new instead of buying it used. I would have forgone the sunroof. So that I could have a carbon fiber roof instead of aluminum. But love all the other things. Thanks for more great i3 content! Sadly i3 no longer available in the us market.
Martin, I am in the US, and looked for quite a while before deciding on an i3. I bought a 2014 REx with what was called at the time the Giga World interior, which is essentially the Lodge interior today. The main difference being the cloth on the 2014 is small squares and the Lodge is more of a houndstooth pattern at least stateside. Mine is pretty well loaded with the pro infotainment, drivers assist with adaptive cruise control, parking assist, convenience package, winter package, and DC charging. About the only thing it doesn’t have is the sunroof. In 2014 the sticker was just over $53,000 US. I absolutely love the car, and it is very upsetting knowing it is being discontinued. At this point I’d look into a battery upgrade before I’d trade for another EV. Thanks for another great informative video!
Nice vid, I happily bought a great spec ‘19 i3S from you early last year, with heatpump and all, and lucky to have the scarce HK speakers ;-) already done 13K miles in it and absolutely love this cool, compact EV. Thanks Wisely.
Martin, I wish you had made this video a year ago. Took me ages to decipher all the variables when looking for a low mileage i3 in 2020/21 Unfortunately you’re also 300 miles away so dropping in to ask you wasn’t really an option. 🤣 Great video though - what Wisely don’t know about i3’s could probably fit on a postage stamp..! In the end though, we got a nice 6,000 mile 2020 Stormtrooper i3 with loft interior and the reversing camera - it was late enough also to have the bigger screen and pretty much the same specification as today. We’ve been so pleased with the quality and performance of it, and so sorry that i3 production is ending, that we’ve just ordered a second New i3 to join the other one! We’ll be a 2x i3 family now.. I think these cars are both keepers.. The first one was for the other half, and she loves it. The second one is for me - an i3s with every option bar the concierge service. It’s one of the last they’ll make - and we want to keep it - so why not..😉 Delivery looks to be early May at present. Can’t wait!!
Thanks for another great video Martin. I bought my grey i3s from Wisely in 2020 and love it. If I had one wish that would be to add adaptive cruise control. I had that on my previous car and found it really useful, other than that it’s a great car and I really enjoy using it.
Great videos from you at Wisely. The information you give is so helpful, and is my point of reference looking for my next i3. It’s good to have details about a car that you (Wisely) clearly rate highly.
Thank you for another very useful video Martin. I've become convinced that an I3 will be my next car, having been sceptical of it before seeing so many positive reviews and your informative videos. I just wish you had a branch in Scotland!
Great content now that the i3 is no longer in production. This really helped me in going over all the options that my new to me i3s has. Everything, except the sunroof, which in hindsight isn't even that expensive (when compared to the rest of the car). Also HK is an option that I wouldn't want to live without, it turns the car in a concerthall on wheels 😀.
Hello Martin, I watched your very nice video, but am still confused about there options included in the S model that are not available with the others, except the tire size. Will you list these please? Thanks very much .
Martin, your videos have helped so many of us that love the I3, thank you! I have a 2018 i3s that I can't seem to get my AM radio to work. I have the Veepak OBD tool and the bimmer code app on my Iphone. The headunit control shows that it is active but it does not show up in my display. Would you have any explanation as to why it's not showing up? is it possible that the radio can not receive AM signal? Any help on getting my AM radio to work would be appreciated. I love listening to talk radio on my commute. I've been able to work around it by turning on the Audacy app on my Iphone, but I prefer to have it on my display and then be able to add it to my favorite buttons on the dash. I love my I3s, I actually had a non-s for a few months before it got totaled in an accident, by the time the insurance money came in I had my new i3S already picked out. Thanks !!
How do you remove the blue pieces on the front bumper of a i3s to paint to a different colour? (Thanks for showing how to remove the blue pieces above the side skirt)
Another great video from the team at Wisely. I bought my i3 in September 2019, by which time the only major option was the 120Ah BEV - perfect choice as the whole point for me to get an i3 was to not have a filthy combustion engine any more. I chose the mineral grey colour, the HK sound system and sun protection glass. The whole thing came in at just over £30k through a dealer in Bedford via CarWow. Extremely pleased with the i3 in general, it's not perfect, but it's very good, and I think BMW discontinued this car far too early. My main niggles are ride quality, which is over damped for my taste, I would prefer a little more smoothness. Tyre and wind noise could be better - and you notice this because being electric the drive train is extremely quiet.
I only bought the rear camera and front parking sensors. I thought that the cruise control was adaptive, I really miss that as my last two cars came with it a no extra cost.
adaptive cruise , big navi and rear parking is 3 must haves. Also heatpump since i live in sweden. I saw one high adaptive leds recently but i missed it, someone bought it b4 me. Im still looking around.
Loved this, thank you! I just bought a 2020 i3S in Melbourne Red. I was holding out for one with sunroof and Harman Kardon speakers, plus the big screen in the middle. My car has the Suite leather interior, which really suits it. I’d really wanted the Lodge interior, like yours, but I’m very happy with the full leather. I’m delighted with the sunroof, it really transforms the interior to my mind. I was fascinated to see what options were available when new, mine comes with almost everything. I’m also happy to have Apple CarPlay- question: can you make it full screen, currently I’ve only been able to make it show on 2/3 of the screen, would love to know if you know of a cure.
From Germany, purchased a used i3 120Ah from the Austrian dealer Jungwagenhaus in Linz, didn't have 4 items (Driving Asistant Plus package, OEM BMW security wheel bolts, adaptive cruise control, mobility kit) that where advertised. They probably didn't verify the equipment through the VIN, otherwise the car is mechanically & electronically sound and has since actually gone up in value at the current high gas prices - so happy in the end.
Asking for the VIN and double checking in the database is a good thing to do if buying from a dealer who does not have much experience with i3's or EVs in general. Glad you are happy in the end though.
Exactly what I was looking for. Can't thank you enough Martin. Glad to see less is more. Although as a dog owner, I would very much prefer the full leather interior and those cars often come fully loaded anyway.
"The European market only has the fully electric version, making the decision very easy". The range extender was the only reason why I eyed the BMW i3 as my possible choice. I can't grasp the reason for such sickly decision to remove the petrol generator offering, but truly make my choice easier. Deleting links and bookmarks for the i3 now. Thanks for the kind words. For better of for worse, even in Europe the i3 is considered quite a "small" vehicle. Combined with not the highest official range, one can understand why so few people went for it in the US depsite it being a fantastic (and versitile) car.
Thank you for the video. Are you sure that Harman/Kardon sound system sounds similar to the standard one? Is there no extra subwoofer that comes with it? I listened to the music in a standard i3 and it sounded noticeably worse that in my Renault ZOE with the Bose sound system (extra). It comes with a large sub in the boot and it gives the music more depth. i3 is an incredible car and I wish BMW upgrades the battery to 52kWh. This is the only thing that’s missing really.
Unfortunately there is no dedicated subwoofer in the i3 even with the Harman Kardon sound system. Possibly due to weight and packaging reasons. Most of the base is produced from the woofers in the front footwells.
I drive 2015 I3 with the lodge interior with the adaptive cruise control, It took me almost a year to find this car. I only wish I held out for a sun roof. The car comes with the park assist package and I visit my friends and use this feature and smile every time I do. I've owned this car for over a year now and with its 60 am/hr pack it suits me just fine. I just cant see owning another car.....mabe the same features with a sun roof down the line....?
Hi wisely. All new models now only come with the 606 sat nav which has the small screen. Do you know if it’s possible to Install the larger 10” screen to 2022 cars?
Love these videos. Would you do a video on how to drive and get the most mileage long distance? Also would love one on upgrading from 3g to 4g without going to dealer. I miss being able to use the app to send directions etc.
We have i3 quite full spec, but we miss Pano roof and Harman a lot, standard music w 2 speakers in i3 is about nothing. Big infotainment screen, adaptive LEDs, driving assistant plus, 20" wheels (no WINTER tires available in market!!!) is options I would skip.
I believe not every iPhone will fit the wireless charging cradle, eg my own 8+ does not fit in i3 charging cradle. Can you please advise which iPhones will fit, or maybe tell me which iPhone model you used, which clearly fits the cradle a treat. I have an i3s on factory order since 2 months with this option specified, hence my interest. Many thanks for this and all your informative videos!
The phone used in the video is an iPhone X. Any of the "Max" iPhones unfortunately do not fit because of the height. The 6.1" iPhones might just about fit without a case but we didn't have one to test out. With Android phones it's even more complicated because the height differs not only based on the screen dimension but the aspect ratio as well, etc.
Having had adaptive cruise control on a MK7 Golf, this is an option I now try to AVOID as in my experience it is terrible. Cruise control with brake function (uses brakes to maintain a target speed) that you as the driver can enable and disable as you predict the road ahead is a much better (and safer) experience.
Ordered my standard I3 with professional navigation in December 21. Sadly, all I3 starting production later april 1st 2022 will get buisiness navigation. Chip Shortage. Do you upgrade? How much would it be? Got already brand new Screen but miss head unit for professional navigation.
We are looking into this. On the pre-LCI vehicles, the Professional Media Package didn't only mean you got the bigger screen, but also some additional features over the Business Navigation, such as voice control - not sure what the situation is like now.
@@wiselyauto As far as i know it needs the evo head unit DVD and the other screen Kyocera in exchange, the programming with actual VIN number and maybe an adapter for the screen. The "i drive" should be the same. New head units without programming are offered in Litaue over ebay around 800 Euro. I got the screen over opurradio USA little less than 500 Euro including delivery. Actually i ordered in the US but it arrived from China....it seems brand new to me. Until now i only have the screen. If you would like to offer the mounting and programming i guess it would be a good buissiness because starting april 1 every delivered car is just with buisiness navigation...therefor approximately 15000 cars are deliverd with this problem until finish of production in july 22.

I'm trading in a i3 with Harmon kardon. My new i3s has base stereo. Is it really that worse?
Thank you
In cold weather say 5c in UK. how much extra range in miles would the heath pump give you. anyone have an approximate idea ?
i mean heat pump lol
We are planning to do that (+ a bit more) the next time we have 2 comparable cars in terms of age and mileage - one with a heat pump and one without.
that would be really interesting.
@@wiselyauto did this video ever get made?
So there is no 120ah with REX for sure ?
Not in the UK.
They used to be offered in some markets like the US or Japan.
@@wiselyauto Voice control is now included in all cars.
The BMW i3s has a totally different torque curve ... the 10hp / 20nm spec does not do it justice.
I wish you would do this video for more cars and brands. car configurators are so trash and unintuitive!
We are planning to do a couple more soon, so keep an eye out for those.
Doesn't mention interior lighting linked to suite and up. Dislike
