I just tried out the frozen grapes. I will be doing this instead of ice for my low proof whiskies going forward. They chilled it fast without the usual thinning feeling of the melted ice. I tried it out with Laphroaig Cairdeas Warehouse 1. I cannot believe how amazing it was.

The cocktail smoking kits actually really do work. If you have a bonefish grill by you order their old fashion and it really does make a HUGE difference
The thing about stones and ice is that stones (or stainless steel) retain sensible heat, which is MUCH lower than latent heat (the energy needed to change phase, eg evaporation or melting). For that reason, ice will ALWAYS be superior at lowering the temperature of liquids, albeit at the cost of diluting them... unless you contain the water! Grapes were a neat trick! On the other hand, stones add mass to a drink, so they take more time to change temperature altogether, so both ice and stones can be added together to keep the entire thing cold for longer (even after the ice is gone) without much dilution (that is, without adding MORE ice to it just to keep it cold)... at the cost of increased dead volume (you fit less booze in a cup).
I’ve seen stainless steel whiskey “stones” containing essentially cold pack liquid inside (so you get phase-change energy and it’s still easy to clean/doesn’t pick up weird flavors).
@@DrDeFord I have some stainless steel ones like that. Didn't know they were that way till I shook em once and heard fluid in them. Searched em for a crack, but found none. I was just thinking about the smoke thing a little more in depth when I was replaying this video back in my mind. In order to make something taste smoky, you'd have to add smoke that had been distilled into liquid for it to be little more than perfume. I've heard of people using smoked grains for beer from cooking shows in addition to the whisk(e)ys on this channel. That got me to think of what would happen if liquid smoke was used in a whiskey as aromatic bitters in cocktails. I can't imagine you'd need more than a drop or 2 in any glass. How would it change the experience? Experiment, I say!
You can bubble smoke directly through liquids, no need for distilling. Imagine a bong. The products exist. Matter of opinion if it's better to make a liquid smoke or to smoke the air and glass, we do of course taste with our nose too.
I'm not sure, but I think the notion is that the oils in the whiskey pick up particulate from the smoke. I've only ever tried this in a "smoked old fashioned" in a couple local bars, but the effect is very nice.
I really like the smoker idea. Will have to look into that. Also, the Bastards Ball was frickng amazing! Thanks fellas and everyone at the Crowded Barrel!!!
My sister-in-law got me some supposed Whisk(e)y stones last Xmas. They were large, metallic, and shaped sort of like 20-sided dice. They were a lot bigger than normal stone cubes. I thanked her and put them in a drawer somewhere, afraid to use them. Brianna /Banana is the star of this channel now.
So the pump is basically an Aero press people use for coffee. The small cubes may not do much but I did get some large whiskey stone spheres that though terrifying if they start rolling towards your face do chill your drink nicely.
If you kept the whiskey stones in a deep freezer (sub 0) they'd likely work better and not dilute. I'm not sure that'd really improve the overall, since the melt from standard ice also allows more aromatics to release, much like adding a bit of water.
Recently went to Costco and they had a huge selection of different Kirkland whisky. Purchased the Islay scotch and was impressed. Should do an episode trying all the different Kirkland whiskey.
It's interesting you brought up the neodymium magnets. I have 2" 304 stainless steel ball bearings and the cleaver dropper coffee brewer. The cleaver dripper doesn't pour thru until you put it on the glass. So you put the ball bearing into the dripper, pour your beverage, wait a minute and putting on your rocks glass for a chilled pour. Zero water down and you can use 1 bearing for multiple drinks. And it's all dishwasher safe to clean up for next time
Nice video Years ago I used some 302 Stainless Steel to make " cubes " I made all the corners rounded Freeze the Cubes and they will cool what you want to drink But most of the time , I just keep the bottles in the freezer Not perfect , but 20 degree Bourbon is the way I drink it most of the time
I'm glad that there's tons of channels like this now. A few years back I bought a friend a set of whiskey stones because they SOUNDED like a good thing, but I feel like an absolute knob about it now.
I have stainless bullets that are for whiskey chilling. They work a little bit but only once then they warm up but if you use half of them, then for the second glass you swap them out, because they're stainless steel, they chill down super cold super fast and are ready for the next glass unless you're shooting them down quick obviously but in ten minutes, they are back to frosty cold again. And I also have a belt buckle flask dispenser 🤣 but the dispenser is a pain in the ass to clean the little canisters... Cause mine has little clear canisters that have three finger crosses that to press up with a glass or shot glass and it automatically fills instead of having to pull a lever. It's cool but if you don't clean one when it empties right way it's a nightmare
there actually is way for "instant age". here's tip for you guys, from Russia, with love: put it in ultrasonic jewellery cleaner with some wood chips. you can make whiskey out of pretty much any alcohol that way. but it would be good idea to close it tight - ultrasonic cleaner also enchase evaporation speed.
I will say with that ice mold and glass: be careful putting the ice in. Might have just been the one glass, but I dropped one in and it cracked the inner wall bottom. Thankfully they were great with customer service and replaced it!
I was going to say the say the same thing. Plus the one time I broke a double-walled glass the thing literally exploded! You’re lucky yours just cracked.
my sister got me the smoker for christmas last year, there's some tricks to it. sometimes even though there's a lot of smoke, sometimes the whiskey doesn't pick up much flavor. I find that if I'm making a cocktail that uses a simple syrup, i'll put that in first with the ice and smoke that- THEN put the other whiskey/liquor in there. gives old fashioneds a twist. works best with a butane torch, don't even think about a regular lighter or match- you really gotta have the flame blasting through there to get the smoke going and non butane lighters will leave an awful aftertaste.
I honestly love Brianna so much 😂🙏🏻, she’s so fun and just adds another layer to the videos that I love. I love that she’s in more of the videos and am excited to see what else y’all do. That was a great shot 🤣👏🏻.
Best whiskey stone idea I’ve seen, was many years ago, before I was into whiskey. They were clear, hollow plastic filled with water. So you got all the advantages of regular ice cubes, but zero watering down.
A bar nearby me does a whiskey cocktail, and they smoke it and it 100% changes the smell and taste. The thing is though, they add egg whites into it before mixing bc that makes the smoke "stick".
easiest way to tell with the whiskey pump would be to pump out some whiskey without the filter, then do a glass with the filter. then compare the 2 to a standard pour whiskey. this way you can tell if it's just airation, or if the wood chip did something.
I’m a bartender at a pretty nice hotel and we do smoked old fashions and manhattans. We use a big smoking board though and I think that the individual smoking tool you showed in this video would actually be much better because of how much better the presentation is.
I found an article regarding magnets and whether or not they were safe. Magnetizing your drinking water breaks its surface tension, making it wetter and more useable by every cell in your body. In addition, there's a strong secondary benefit. Applying a magnetic field to water can not only make it wetter, but it can also raise its pH. I figure if its safe in drinking water ..there shouldn't be a problem putting it in your whisky! lol.
There's more to rapid aging than high pressure and wood chips. The technology dates to the late 19th century (hurray for old distillery manuals). The older version included oxygenation, temperature cycling, yes some vibration, and a couple other things I can't remember offhand. It worked, but it was way more expensive than just letting booze sit in barrels.
My Dad used to char oak trim in the oven and then add the charred oak to the white lightning, and put it in an agitator for 24 to 48 hours and then filter it .. people would come from miles around to get my dads whiskey.
Shameless plug... I make a version of the cocktail smoking kits using old whiskey staves as the base, and stave shavings for the burning material, sold as a kit if anyone is interested. ;) They do work! The longer you leave the top on, the smokier the effect.
I do have some whiskey "balls" that are giant steel balls filled with some kind of liquid. The size makes it so they actually cool pretty well and don't hit your teeth when you drink, but it does feel like it will break the glass if you aren't careful. It rarely gets used, and usually for wine actually where even a little water from ice will ruin the flavor. For whiskey, just use ice, it's 40+% and it can take a couple cubes.
One of the features of a good wine glass is how thin the glass is, I think that extends to whiskey as well. A very thin wall glass is so much more enjoyable

You guys need to try the Norlan whiskey glass. I've done side by side with Glencairn glasses, and the Norlan blew the Glencair out of the water. MUST HAVE whisky glassware for any real enthusiast.
The only christmas gift to get a whiskey lover provided it is to be relevant in to wiskey , whether it be for stocking or tree, is a whiskey. It's my personal philosophy and it has yet to fail me.
I bet the reason the whiskey stones don't cool very well is because there is no phase change. It takes a relatively large amount of thermal energy to turn ice into water as opposed to just warming up a piece of stone.
I love watching stuff like this. Bc it reminds me how little of a whiskey drinker I actually am even though it's all I drink🤣. I only like blended Irish whiskey and I always chase with a coke back or mix with a Lil coke... 🤫
The pump theoretically could work. Cleveland Whiskey does a similar process with their bourbon: they pressurize 6-month-old whiskey with pieces of barrel wood. I don't know that pump could quite do that, but it's possible. Cocktail smoking just seems like a hipster fad.
Experiments show that a small amount of water - say one ice cube allows the flavours to develop, i.e. causes more of the volatile liquids escape so increasing the flavour. Therefore a small amount of water is a good not bad. Dunking loads of ice in whisky is obviously a bad idea.
Something to remember about whisky stones is that they are a physics demonstration at their core. A larger stone will resist increasing in temperature more than several smaller ones AND to achieve the greatest effect, you need the most surface area possible. If you want optimal results, you need to use a large spherical stone which basically displaces your dram so that the glass appears nearly full. Is it woefully impractical? YES. BUT, consider the origin of whisky stones. It's a good improvisation if you don't have ice or refrigerants.
Little late here but neodymium magnets are just composed of iron and boron which aren't particularly toxic, the issue comes when a magnet or magnets are ingested, if you only ingest one it can be dangerous if your get an NMRI for example, which would rip the magnet out through your body, if you accidentally ingest two they can pinch your intestines which is, as one might guess, not good.
Oh my god!!! I just started watching this channel. I was thinking you guys should try Malort and low and behold it's in the video!! You guys are great!!
I just wanna say, I use whiskey stones all the time and y'all did not give an accurate test for the stones. Not only were they warmer than the grapes, but stones take more time to equalize in temperature, meaning they take longer to "activate" or have a noticeable temperature difference in the whiskey. When I use whiskey stones, I keep them in my sub-zero freezer that brings their temperature below 0F which really helps with the speed of temperature equalization. Additionally, I would say whiskey stones are best used when smoking a cigar, as this is when you are drinking less frequently. It gives the stones more time to equalize in temperature providing a better experience where ice would water down your whiskey.
Don't use whiskey stones or similar! You'll never keep a drink cold as long as ice cubes do. This is due to the energy needed for the phase transition of ice to liquid water, needs a lot energy (heat from drink). Stone/Marble/Metal cubes uses always the same amount of energy to go up one degree, no matter the temperature you start with. Water on the other hand, uses the same of amount energy while it's ice, and same amount while it's liquid. But when transitioning from ice to water, it uses 80 times more energy, energy that it extracts from the warmer liquid. In other words, it's the phase transition of water that has the most impact.
Honestly, just a water dropper and that's it. Well, a glass with plain water, Glencairn and the whisky of my desire. I keeping book on how much water I have added to the whisky, temperature and so on. If you do that, you will have well enough to keep an eye on and wont need another accessoir.
ok, ok but... I have a request... Please I beg of you people.... Use the smoker thingy on the whiskey recipient part of the pump thingy. Close the pump thingy without dispersing the smoke. Shake (maybe ?) Pumpy pumpy pump... Is there any noticeable difference ? Still using the wood """"filter"""" would probably be good (higher pressure ?) ? I need to know... But I don't drink alcohol...

You guys need to try the Norlan whiskey glass. I've done side by side with Glencairn glasses, and the Norlan blew the Glencair out of the water. MUST HAVE whisky glassware for any real enthusiast.
I have the double sided glass with the round ice which works great, I thought I bought it from your shop
The only christmas gift to get a whiskey lover provided it is to be relevant in to wiskey , whether it be for stocking or tree, is a whiskey. It's my personal philosophy and it has yet to fail me.
I personally like whiskey stones for keeping whiskey cold, not getting it to cold. And for cleaning glencairns I just let it soak for a little.
Damn fine shot!
Frozen grapes is such a good Idea that never occurred to me
that first one is literally the espresso press just with chips instead of filters
The metal double-walled Glencairn gives a nice thin lip with the same effect as the glasses
You should snap the wooden disc in half and see if the whiskey penetrated the wood at all.
I'm asking for a "that isn't terrible" cocktail next time I go to a bar.
I recently had a smoked Old Fashion. It was great. I'm definitely getting a smoker to mess with.
The magnetic whiskey stones are a good idea tough if you freeze the magnets to much they become less magnetized
It's actually the exact opposite; the colder the magnet the greater the magnetism.
It gives the stones more time to equalize in temperature providing a better experience where ice would water down your whiskey.
ive been watching for a while and just notice the wall in the backgroud super cool
Glad I'm not the only one who uses sharpies as a stirring device in a pinch
Hey got to say I like watching your show and Brianne reminds me of a adult version of Louise off of Bob's Burgers
17:34 The man just whipped out a Plumbus on his video like it was nothing.
Honestly, just a water dropper and that's it. Well, a glass with plain water, Glencairn and the whisky of my desire. I keeping book on how much water I have added to the whisky, temperature and so on. If you do that, you will have well enough to keep an eye on and wont need another accessoir.
"whats for weed...."
"oh that smells like poison. i love it"
god, she is the best
ok, ok but... I have a request... Please I beg of you people....
Use the smoker thingy on the whiskey recipient part of the pump thingy.
Close the pump thingy without dispersing the smoke.
Shake (maybe ?)
Pumpy pumpy pump...
Is there any noticeable difference ?
Still using the wood """"filter"""" would probably be good (higher pressure ?) ?
I need to know... But I don't drink alcohol...
Frozen grapes are THE best summer snack no argument
