I know man, right? I'm low-key pissed cuz I could've REALLY used this info when I was writing a lot more frequently. I was into jazz but struggled to make things I wrote sound like jazz and now I'm like wtf (edit: I was able to make things jazzy, I worded that wrong. I didn't understand the theory behind what I was writing mainly. When I changed keys I understood it to a certain extent but now I'm like wtf I could've been doing ALL this this whole time????). Oddly enough, this video is 6 years old and it would've been about 6 years ago that it would've really helped me.
There are a bunch of RUclips tutorial videos that spend 4:25 getting as far as "welcome to another episode and today I'm going to tell you about...". Thank you for cramming so much into so little time.

and 3 more minutes asking you to "subscribe to my channel, to my gf channel, to my gf side-nigga's channel, check my patreon, my online store, my uncle Joe's spotify, pet my dog and do a backflip. Now, back to the video"
A lot of people come here and demand "more content like this". What they don't realize is that this actually goes beyond education; this video is an artwork in and of itself. Myles' smooth voice, the well-toned drums, the tightly interlocked fills hitting just before the end of the speech, the examples of modal interchange themselves and that brilliant melody work together to put this video in the realm of spoken word music.

I’m surprised I never saw this video, since it’s already been around for 6 years already, but, truth be told, you are spot on. Modal interchange, (and other techniques) has always been magical in my mind, as staying diatonic is limiting without a doubt.
There are too many things I love in your videos, but one of them is the music in the back that starts coming to life when you're almost done explaining something and then smoothly demonstrates what you've just said.

Hey Myles, I loved this!!! So, Im pretty familiar with music theory, and this gave me an amazing way to look at things that I didn't really understand!!! One question though, and I'll try to be brief, because its actually pretty simple. So, Im a huge radiohead fan, and they obviously utilize this technique to perfection--but in the examples you use; and the examples i can create, use a lot of chord extensions which makes this process a lot smoother and easier, which is why i think Jazz can work so well (because it allows you to connect those modes). Do you have any comments on utlizing this type of techniques with more simple chords??? So for example, a i, III, VII, VI chord progression....if i swap out a iii for the III from the ionian...without adding extensions it can be super jarring....I guess i was wondering if you had any ideas about this??? Regardless, this is an amazing video, and I had never thought about this in such a simplistic (in a minimalist) way before. SOOO many kudos.

OK, everyone already said this. But this is the greatest tutorial on any subject in the history of all human kind. It's so practical, informative, concise, and well-designed. Thank you for doing this and for doing it so well!
That diatonic chord chart at 2:13; anyway to get a PDF of that?
I'm Here!! 4 years in the Future, and I feel like I've struck Instructive Gold!
😊
This is great ^^
I have been studying theory from Bach to Bill Evans and you have exploded my mind. You helped me connect the dots. You deserve an award.
Me: **sees RUclips recommend me a music theory video** alright cool let's watch this!
RUclips video: **is amazing**
Me: Wow this is great! I'm gonna subscribe!
Me: **as I go to click on subscribe, I see the channel's name** Native Construct?! That's one of my favorite bands!!
Hi I love you guys! Please keep making more awesome videos and music! (Speaking of which, when's your next album coming out?)
My God! This is pure GOLD. I can´t believe I hadn´t seen this before.
I'd wish you'd make the minor chords lowercase as well.
That's just me lol
Haah; yup..
The way you produced this videos really helped me to understand the content.
And I'm saying this as a non native speaker
What music program did you use for this?
He probably used multiple audio/music programs, one for the notation and one for the actual creation of the music and sounds heard in the video.
Then there was a video editor/animation program where the majority of the time and work was spent (probably).
Even if this video is 6 years old, is the only one which has explained exactly what I was searching for
So basically I can use any chord I want, any time I want
I waa thinling the same but if you have the progression : C E7. F . Is E7 a modal interchange, no. Is anothee type of analysis wich I dont know....
@Commenter in a Box if so, Where would the Am be? Unless E7 does not resolve to the VI. In that case It Is like you said. Agree on that?
@@joseg.g897 E7 resolves into F because it shares 2 notes with Am, A and C. If it's an Fmaj7 chord then it has all the notes of Am, A C E (plus the F in the bass) and that's why it works
This is simply the best video on music theory on youtube.
This video is the only non-scientific method of curing cancer that actually works.
this is one of the better music theory videos - so much polish i can see my reflection
Make more
Never have I been this excited while watching a video on music theory.
Extremely well presented.

1:21 look it's the christmas chord
You saved my time.... very thank you. I'll apply this theory to my new project right now.
Your graphic at 0:13 confused me since the ones shown as "D-7, E-7, A-7" are actually minor 7th chords. I have never seen the hyphen used to replace the "m" designation for minor. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems confusing to us newbies.
The Naturally occurring 4 note chords in key of Cmaj are:
Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmaj, G7, Am7, Bdim7
@@abox4415Yeah it's from jazz which they use a triangle for major and a minus sign for minor
This is one of THE best videos on this topic. It's straightforward while being playful, engaging, and very, very informative. Do more! Many, many more!!
