"มหานิมิตร" ประพันธ์โดย จางวางทั่ว พาทยโกศล เป็นผลงานชนะเลิศ เพลงมหานิมิตรนี้จางวางทั่วได้ประพันธ์ดัดแปลงมาจากเพลงหน้าพาทย์สำคัญของไทยที่มีชื่อว่า "ตระนิมิตร" ให้สามารถบรรเลงเป็นทางสากล ซึ่งเพลงตระนิมิตรนี้ เป็นเพลงที่ถือว่าเป็นเพลงครู นักดนตรีจะใช้บรรเลงในพิธีสำคัญต่าง ๆ เช่น งานไหว้ครู บรรเลงเป็นการอัญเชิญครูบาอาจารย์ เทวดาทั้งหลายมาประชุมกันเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล ดังนั้นจึงมีความหมายอันควรแก่การเคารพนับถือเป็นสิริมงคล เหมาะสมที่จะใช้เป็นเพลงชาติไทยได้
รัฐบาลได้ทดลองบรรเลงออกอากาศทางวิทยุกระจายเสียงอยู่ระยะหนึ่ง แต่ต่อมาเมื่อคณะกรรมการพิจารณาเพลงชาติจะเสนอผลการประกวดให้คณะรัฐมนตรีประกาศรับรองนั้น คณะกรรมการฯ ได้ประชุมกันและมีความเห็นว่า เพลงชาติมีลักษณะที่บ่งบอกถึงความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ หากมีการใช้อยู่ 2 เพลง จะทำให้คลายความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ลง จึงได้ตัดสินใจไม่เสนอเพลงชาติแบบไทยที่ได้คัดเลือกไว้ให้คณะรัฐมนตรีประกาศรับรองเป็นเพลงชาติในที่สุด
