Uninsured Drivers are you Covered Against Them?
You knew the scenario. You're sitting at the traffic lights, waiting for them to go to green, next thing 'bang!', somebody runs in the back of you. That's not bad, you're insured, they’re insured - you hope; but what happens if they're not insured? Don't worry if they're not insured.
We have the Motor Insurer's Bureau and the Motor Insurer's Bureau will deal with your claim for loss, damage or personal injury in exactly the same way as if the other driver was insured.
So if you're hit by an uninsured driver, don't worry too much and don't be taken in by the advertising that say, ”If you're hit by an uninsured driver, we'll deal with your claim”.
What those companies are saying is,
'If you're hit by an uninsured driver, your insurance will pay for your claim'.
One thing to bear in mind of course, is that if you're hit by someone else, and you put a claim in on your own insurance, even though it's not your fault, remember, you are still making a claim.
You have a 'No Claim Bonus', not a 'No Fault Bonus'. So if you put a claim through your own insurance company, even though it's not your fault, you’ve still had a claim and you can lose your 'No Claim Bonus' and your premiums can go up next year. So if you can possibly avoid putting your claim through your own insurance company if the accident wasn't your fault, do so. It could save you a lot of money.
One word of warning: if you've had an accident and it wasn't your fault and you're not putting it through your own insurance, you do need to tell them for information only that you've had the accident that you didn't put a claim in and it wasn't your fault. That way at least it's on their record. It won't make any difference to your premiums. It won't make any difference to anybody else, but you do have to tell them.
