- Back when I was a kid, I got given a printed photo of a 6x4 ACCO with a Papas front lift body on it, which was located in Port Macquarie. Fast forward about 10 years and this truck was still around, but now resided in rural NSW looking after a relatively new JR Richards front lift service in Moree. It turns out one of the drivers I followed along in a comb lift that morning in January 2012 was headed out in the forked truck later to cover the commercial run, so I took up the opportunity that was presented to me. The day before when I arrived, I saw the front loader at a workshop with the cab tilted over, which had me surprised and keen, so I was pumped when I could get it on camera.
An advanced warning that this footage isn’t extremely entertaining and lacks any swift pace container emptying, rather it’s all pretty slow, even sometimes painfully slow to watch! The Papas front lifts don’t have the fastest arms in general from what I’ve seen, so the mostly idle engine revs didn’t help with the hydraulic speeds at all. I did kindly request if the driver could do some light throttling for the sake of listening enjoyment, so there is a little bit of sound included. In the first couple clips and at the very end you’ll get a few tastes of a very satisfying exhaust leak, really making this old ACCO sound phat, too bad I was unable to capture more of it.
FYI with the mix of yellow and green lids on the 1.5m and 3m bins being dumped, there is no trashing going on, it was all mixed general waste collection at play. I did a bit of chopping up and merging of the original videos I edited to try and make a better upload here, but it’s still not quite awesome, which is a shame as there was some great potential to put unit 461 here on good show. I’ll also mention JR Richards ran another Papas machine, which I spotted at the Maclean region depot (Clarence Valley), however this one was on a 6x4 Volvo and in the dark green paint scheme - I’m spewing I have no photo or video evidence of it.
Off the top of my head, the only other Papas front lift I’ve uploaded on here is the plain white Volvo I got to use at Watts Waste. I’ve encountered other Papas equipment on my travels, but sadly never had luck getting them on video, which has been disappointing as it was a once common make that deserves some time in the spotlight. It seems there are almost none left working in Sydney which sucks! Although I’m hopeful Grundy’s Waste still runs 1 or 2 Papas, so I can record another...
Looking back on the old footage now, got to love how you took the time to cash these machines that are probably no longer with us. A little bit of history in the way of truck designs, their operations and company logos too. Great work on helping achieve this for all to enjoy in the future.
That truck is awesome. Its crazy how negative the forks can go as he's leveling the bin as he brings it up
Nice Video Mitch I remember this unit at Tamworth once I think before it retired this thing is sloooooooooow 😴😴😴

That exhaust note reminds me of the BFI Riteway bodied fleet.
