  • What a fun time we live in where we can have drama about an app update. As a designer, I love nerding out about the little details and this update from Sonos has gotten a lot of attention. So if you have no idea what's going on, let me explain it to you, and if you are enraged from Reddit, then welcome!

Idk how RUclips knew I’d like this but this was a great video, your quality outpaces your audience by a mile

This whole shitshow is going to make a great case study for any number of tech and business based degrees. How to piss off and alienate your existing customer base, while also scaring away any new customers all so a product that very few people wanted can... kinda work. A bit.

10/10 case study of what not to do. Especially because previous to this era Sonos fan boys were ride or die.

I don’t know what the app looked like before - but they should’ve just changed the colors/icons/radii but kept everything in the same positions

Thanks for overview of the Sonos self-inflicted drama and a walkthrough of some of the issues with the new app. I've been a Sonos user and fan since 2013. I wasn't thrilled with the S1 vs S2 saga/drama from a few years back that essentially made my older equipment obsolete (gee, we all have hundreds of dollars laying around to buy new stuff, right?) Now this. I had planned on ordering the Sonos Ace headphones, but cancelled the order due to the app debacle. I didn't want to 'reward' Sonos for their stupidity and apparent little regard for their devout users and AV industry partners. Some Sonos folks need to be fired over this -- it would be a courageous move! :)

I hope whoever considers to buy Sonos products should watch this video first, I am Sonos user for long enough I don’t recommend to get one it’s been worked over 4 years since May 2024 the last update of Sonos app my system failed apart. Now Sonos ear phone released my trust is gone mean really gone, I don’t buy frustrating products and I don’t recommend to my friends.

Thanks Grayson; many of these comments line up with the frustration of the dysfunctions of the app. But any clues about the failure to find or connect with Sonos speakers that have worked fine before? Many complaints on Reddit, but few going directly to this issue.

I still have this problem from time to time and for some reason my arc almost never appears in the app. I think I am going to take the advice of some on reddit and do a full system reset and start from scratch.

I wish I could get to the problems you talk about. Never had the old app so just have paperweight Sonos products. Ok the app fails to play Apple Music, just skips tracks. But I can’t even work out how to detach an era from first setup, so it can be grouped with others. No idea how to “group” 4. Things only work after trying 4 times and watching 10 RUclips videos on factory resets. I have factory resetted more times than playing them.
Agree with your sentiment entirely. But does anyone have any suggestions for us new Sonos gooses to get past simple steps like this?

I know they published an update last week that should help with setting up new products. Unfortunately, it is a crap shoot if it actually solves your problems.

Good review ---- and agree the rush likely accelerated for the headphone launch, but you're probably being a bit too nice. Just a couple of points, Sonos have similar history going back years, it's not an isolated mess up (eg aggressive de-support of older tech in 2020, force bricking hardware then the backlash that resulted in the S1 app), secondly the quote from their CPO on their brave app decisions, the same person who dumped $665k of stock on 20th May, whilst there's still no honest apology to customers. If you'd mentioned this things it would probably be an even more balanced review of the company (sadly.)

Oh wow this is a very important point in the whole story. When your internal stakeholders make a move like this it usually signals a lack of trust at a deep level.

As a Product Manager that works closely with design teams, this reeks of stakeholderisms. Refactor and redesign with no clear goal, modals and sheets for days, a completely unintuitive step backwards. Its so sad to see it in so many apps for IOT devices. Also it doesn't look like they used any of the native iOS functions, everything is custom which is usually a complete waste of time. Just looks like some stakeholder wanted to copy Apple Music for whatever reason.

The more I use the app the less it makes sense. So many little muscle memory actions that do not have the intended effect.

The app was fine, latest version is just awful. It takes more taps to get where you want to go. Putting serious consideration into downgrading all products to the s1 app

That static search bar is obnoxious. The drawer swiping navigation is a scourge in this app. This isn’t tinder 😂

It is funny to me that the goal of the redesign was streamlining navigation. After walking my dad through the update on his phone, I can report this navigation is not easier.
