    very interesting Justin, and also a bonus that you don't have that awful woman in the car too !! I still think the upchanges on that gearbox are a bit slow, I'm sure you could change up in a manual box just as fast (or slow) !!

    Ah, the days of being an impoverished student/new graduate. I once sold my bass guitar and practice amp for A$20 at the local pawn shop just so I could put half a tank of petrol in my ancient 4.0L Valiant station wagon (what a bus for $700...). Yes it was tough, but still the most fun time in my life - zero responsibility!

    I know that F1 is such a different place now but would you want to go back there?? I think it would even harder than before. You could do their RUclips channel, hahahaha

    People. That is the only thing that truly matters. Wherever you are, whatever job you do, however much you get paid, it is the people that matter. You can have great pay, working conditions and lots of holiday and perks but where people are a bunch of a**holes, which all adds up to a horrible stressful job that you hate with every fibre of your body. Conversely, I've had jobs where the pay is rubbish, holidays are legal minimum and the building is a dump, yet the people were great. It didn't pay the bills but it was the best of times. Like I say, it is the people who matter.
    Graduate engineer pay is still rubbish (still seeing £14k jobs here) it can't compare with pretty much any other field, but most of us can't imagine doing anything else.

    Great story. Similar in some ways to mine. I spent all my youth wanting to join the RAF, didn’t wanna do anything else, and so I joined up to be a propulsion technician. But from very early on, the class system and snobbery of the RAF didn’t sit right with me, especially while carrying my working class chip on my shoulder. So I left. Went back to my locksmiths which remains the best job I ever had.

    Thanks for sharing with us Justin. What I have found in the 46+ yrs I have been on this planet of ours is Life is about "choices". Sometimes you make good ones, sometimes bad ones. You can't blame people for your failures, just like you can't blame people for your own success. What's difficult is finding something you really passionate about and peruse that. I have really struggled with just finding what I am truly passionate about, then have the courage to say "ok I am going to go all in". Over the years, you become less and less likely to take those risks. You get married, have kids, have a mortgage and you think to yourself that the risk is not worth the reward. Then 20 yrs pass and your a miserable soul full of bitterness and regret. So try and make good "choices" in life. Take a moment and smell the roses, because that one rose you stop for? May actually change your life. 🙏 Just so you know.....I need to stop for that rose too...I am still trying to make those right choices....Its not easy. Anyway, sorry for the rant...Just my thoughts.

    • @FezzaYT
      @FezzaYT  4 года назад

      it does get harder with time and most of my friends would never take the risks I've taken. They look at me and think they would like to do the same and I look at them and wish I had the stability that they have in their lives. Sometimes we just have to stop and be grateful for what we have :)

    Impressive.
    My background is also mechanical engineering. I was draughtsman for 15 years until 1995. I left to work for the CAD/CAM centre at Warwick Manufacturing Group within Warwick University.
    I worked with a guy who’d been in F1 as designer before WMG.
    After I’d been there about 18 months he left and went to work for Jaguar Racing as a System Admin.
    They became Red Bull.
    I believe he worked his way up to technology manager/president or some such thing.
    I remember him saying F1 was not like anything else. He worked all summer weekends as you might expect and he said the job had to be above family.
    Apparently it was well paid and he left for twice what the CAD/CAM centre were paying me 😁

    Really interesting story and I relate to it completely. I too went through financial hardship when I was at university and for many years afterwards. It is only through hard work and perseverance that we can overcome such difficulties. When you’re going through the difficult times it can be hard to see light at the end of the tunnel, and it can take many years to get to the other side, but when you do reach the other side it is fantastic to realise that ones achievements are solely down ones own dedication, hard work and resilience.

    Fascinating...Tyrrell was one of my favorite teams (after Colin Chapman's Lotus!). I found their outside the box thinking as brilliant as Chapman's. The P34 was as revolutionary as the Lotus 77/78/79. It speaks volumes that Tyrrell evolved to BAR/BAT which is now even a bit more famous as Mercedes-AMG Petronas. You certainly got to participate in an amazing history!
