  • Today our Percheron Draft Horse, Ken, is back to work! Jim is also talking about how to train a dog about horses.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Skippie is a very good boy! He’s young and behaves like a much older dog. You can trust him to come back and not run off like a maniac. That’s huge!

Jim it would be so interesting if you had a camera on Skippy when you are working the horses to see dogs view of things.

Life is about change. Must embrace. 😊

I thought Brenda’s interview in the last video with the young lady explaining the bones along the horses spine was excellent. She explained so well why it is important not to work a young horse too hard before his spine has developed. Something Jim has told us all along by bringing young horses along slowly. One can learn so much from this channel. Thank you very much Jim and Brenda!

I kinda knew Ken would be babysitting the youngsters in the woods this year, coacher, anchor. Jim will be able to drop is lines and do his work knowing that Ken will hold it all down.
Skippy was quite nuts, but it takes 2 or 3 years before a dog really comes into his own, he's coming along steady now.
Of course you need the slow horse to speed up! Nothing worse than dawdling horses. On the other hand, Ken's steadiness is an asset with the babies, he'll show them how to behave and survive out in the woods. Been a while since Ken worked, but he's always very ho-hum about it, never gets up fresh.
    Greetings from Australia.

Praying all the folks in Florida are safe from the hurricane. Between back-to-back hurricanes Helena and now Milton, Florida has had it bad. Praying for your safety. My sister-in-law lives in Naples. She said yesterday they had "battened down the hatches" and were ready for Milton as much as they could be. I'm up in northeast Tennessee were Helena did a lot of devastation. I'm safe where I live, but the flooding and wind here in northeast Tennessee, NC, and GA has been deadly. Heard last night that 1,000s are dead in NC.😪 They've even run out of body bags in some areas.

I don't have horses but have been able to train my dog to lay under what ever piece of equipment I have in the woods when I'm felling trees as soon as she hears the saw start she looks to see what I'm doing she knows it's safe when the tree is down

It is such a treat to see Ken working the woods with Jim. He does deserve his semi retirement but he is such a fun horse to see doing his thing. Thanks for sharing and I think you are doing a fine job with Skip too. He has grown and matured as he did but we all know training is a forever job. I will say I’m looking forward to seeing Lady and Bill teamed up again one day when she’s through with her Momma duties because watching those two horses working together is a sight to enjoy as well. And I was so engrossed in the horses working those logs I forgot to see what was different about Earl but I’d guess he got a new mane doo!!!:):):)

When you talked about hitting skip with the whip, it reminded me of the old guys around here. In the winter they would ride back and forth through town and to the woods on their front Bob sled, unhooking the back one and leaving it in the woods ,then either turning the swinging bunk to the side or taking in off completely. Dogs wood often chase the horses barking and bitting at their heels. The old guys would whip them dogs with the ends of their lines. They learned a quick lesson just like skip😂

Jim, You're absolutely dead on your analogy that horses are a product of their environment . If the trainer/teamster is laid back in general the horse is easy going as well.

I have a vibrating collar for my dogs. It has helped them tremendously to listen when they are running along atv or horses to stay away from tires or horses' feet. It's loud when traveling so they can feel the vibrating collar and know I am asking them to do something or not to do something. Just an idea 💡
Dogtra collar is the best I've used!

Spot on about the teamster/horse temperaments reflecting each other.
I wonder if Earl is pulling more if he is a little ahead? Lovable Ken is powerful if slow and plodding. I think what you are doing with Skippy is good.
It is nice to see the woods through the seasons..

Earl got his mane roached!!✂️ I'm guessing Duke did too!? It's always good to see Ken working in the timber woods! Was Buck faster than Ken or about the same speed, I can't remember? (I still miss him. He and Ken were a gorgeous team!) Glad Skippy is doing good for you if Brenda doesn't go to work with you! P.S. I would suggest you get Skippy an orange dog collar or orange sweater to wear in the woods, especially during hunting season.

Well, I do not work with workhorses. But for many years, I worked with and trained riding horses. I had this stallion in a couple of other horses who when I was in a bad mood they never ever ever did anything wrong. I knew I would get after them and they just wouldn’t do anything wrong. But when I was in a mellow mood. It would dry all kinds of things. so I think it is a matter of your horses reading and your body language on that day

  • @JohnFieldingUSA
    @JohnFieldingUSA 6 часов назад +5

Observation: Skip put his teeth on your hand/arm, I would suggest correcting that. Obviously he wasn’t being aggressive but it’s ok to set boundaries especially when your grandkids are around him. Snap your fingers, use your forefinger to poke his cheek or even put your fingers in his mouth to make it uncomfortable for him. Dog training sometimes is process of elimination as for what works and what doesn’t.

Hey Jim, think like a pack leader for a trained obedient dog. Also don’t say his name when instructing him, a sound (not unlike your awesome sounds you make with your horses) will communicate with him. The spoken name only excites them, especially with young dogs, and does not exist in their natural pack animal system.
Thks for your great videos. Your horses are amazing!
