Oh.. Clara..the makeup…no…! Hurd Hatfield of “The Picture of Dorian Gray”…love him..and Ida Lupino..a groundbreaking woman of the time. 💕ty for this upload!
Thank you for presenting the LUX Playhouse production of Various Temptations, with Ida Lupino and Hurd Hatfield (The Picture of Dorian Gray), from 1959, with original commercials that aired on that CBS-TV program. This is great reminiscing or a history lesson for those who are too young to remember. BRAVO!!!
Wonderfully stylish presentation of a tale that is reminiscent of both "The Lodger" and Ida's own film "Beware My Lovely." Thoroughly captivating performances by two of the brightest stars in Hollywood make for a most poignant love story. Absolutely love it! Thank you so much for posting this gem!
Ida Lupino had been scheduled to appear on a May 1946 "HOLLYWOOD STAR TIME" radio adaptation of "The Lodger" (featuring a similar theme), but she had to withdraw because of laryngitis [Cathy Lewis appeared in her place].
In the 1958-'59 season, the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company began to "split" its sponsorship of "SCHLITZ PLAYHOUSE" with Lever Brothers (the makers of Lux soap) for its Friday night filmed MCA/Revue anthology series on CBS [9:30pm(et)]. That summer, Schlitz pulled out [they concentrated on sponsoring Ray Milland's "MARKHAM", another MCA/Revue series, on the same network], and Lever assumed full sponsorship of the series (as "LUX/STRIPE PLAYHOUSE"). When it was finally cancelled, they moved their sponsorship to Sunday nights that fall, sustaining Jack Benny {Lux} and George Gobel {Stripe toothpaste} on alternate weeks.
Besides realizing that her soulmate is an insane strangler the other sad part is that when she put that makeup on she made herself look vulgar instead of the really beautiful woman she was.
Hurd Hatfield as Jack the Ripper -- that's a new one ;) Of course he plays it with total perfection. There are lots of dramas about women who fatefully take a walk on the wild side.
The deep emptiness of loneliness can change one's ability to perceive the character flaws of another. Sadly, this can be so terribly heartbreaking and dangerous for the lonely person! I know. 😔
Many very good products are no longer available. That's how it happens sometimes. And, besides, it IS still around. You might want to do some research before you make comments.

Many thanks for these marvellous old tv plays. Ida Lupino is terrific. Film quality and sound quality are superb.

Wonderful to see the matchless Ida Lupino
Very powerful and well acted.

I love glamorous classic films!! Its a whole other planet now! Unfortunately!!
Enjoyed it 😊
I recognize the actor: he played Dorian Grey in the movie Portrait of DG.

Very dramatic and well acted! Thank you for posting! 🙂

Yes, that is true,could occur.
Script was very good!
All of the live radio plays/tv dramas were aces back then.
Aired Feb.20th,1959
When I saw the strange impassive face of the creepy guy in the first scene, my first thought was “Hurd Hatfield”. I was surprised it was really him.
Thank you
Thanks
Ida Lupino was best known for playing tough American women in Hollywood but she was actually English, so her accent here is real.
Strange, pervy story.
That relationship put the “D” in dysfunctional.
Sadness of a lonley lady.
❤, 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤
I hope you have the unsold pilot The Long Highway in your archives.
Do we have to see that irritating clock on the screen?
You’re not used to timing strips by now?😮
Yes, thought the same!😒
She almost made it home safely! Didn’t close her apt door fast enough ugh
Can anyone tell me the name of the blonde girl who was doing the Lux soap commercial?
Complete n Compulsory
She just had to go and paint her face and ruin it for herself..tisk tisk
If Lux soap was so wonderful why isn’t it available anymore?
You can still get it on Amazon..smells good!
I read that Lever phased out Lux in the 1990s and concentrated on Dove soap.
@@rarespiritwendy😅I gotta be kidding!!!!!
