Bumblebee Rescue From Mite Infestation

  • I’m not sure this little lady will survive as I found her on her back this morning but think it was the large infestation mites she had that was stopping her taking off and wore her out. I used a solution of sugary water to pry them off and then washed her with water afterwards however in hindsight I think possibly a tiny stubby paintbrush dry would be preferable.
Update 17:35 23/03/2-22 Sadly she didn’t survive :( I think being on the ground all night last night sapped her strength and she wasn’t going to make it regardless. I will buy a small brush and try the dry method next time if there are mites.

You are an absolute legend. Bless her little heart. Hope she survive. Not weird at all any one that would think that I wouldn’t trust as far as I could throw them. Thank you for sharing

Thankyou!! I found a bee on my garden step and got it some sugary food and realised it was covered in about 20-30 mites, so I got a nail file and squashed them all and he was lifting his little arms up to show where they were. I’ve hopefully helped him but I had to google if there was anything else if I could do. (I’m a bee novice, I’m highly allergic and normally run)

Brilliant information I’d never have thought of that method of removing mites. Hope she pulled through. We rescued one recently from the supermarket carpark, she was on her back too. I fed her once we got home not many mites on her and she fed when I put her on the flowers but sadly she didn’t survive.

Did you ever do a follow up video? Was the bumblebee ok?

Hopefully, it eventually flew off into a bush but I never saw it again. :(

How do you manage not suffering stings whilst sorting out the mite problem?

Bumblebees in particular are very gentle and seem to be able to sense if something is a threat. They give you little warning signs by lifting their legs so it’s easy to tell if you are annoying them. i’ve never been stung by a bumblebee and I’ve handled lots, but I have been stung by wasps when they are usually on their way out at the end of the year. They don’t mean it and I would never hurt one because wasps are just as vital to the ecology of the planet as these in my opinion
