  • I thought I would try again to get bumble bees to nest in my garden by using ceramic pots but smashed it on the first attempt! However undeterred I continued on and I think I found an even better method now I just need the bees!

Go to any pet shop and ask for some "dirty litter" from a mouse or hamster cage.

We had bumblebees nesting in our hedgehog house last year so your old animal house theory makes sense

Good luck. Looks cosy enough. We've been fortunate to have bees find nesting sites in our garden maybe due to the rats that live in it lol. We have a mouse under the shed we see running in and out and a Bombus terrestrial has been going under the shed so 🤞 that that's a site this year. The best nest was the Bombus pascuorum nest last summer a beautiful mossy mound. I uploaded that video. Hope you have success.

These need to be built in the Autumn so mice will use them during the Winter. The smell of mice repels a type of moth that is a bee parasite. The site needs to be very dry and in the shade. I would suggest dry grass instead of cat fur.

If it fails this year I will dig it up and try alternatives for sure. :)

Brilliant idea! I hat lots of bumble bees over wintering under lots of forest floor type holes in my allotment plot. There are several holes around the plot where they go, I’ll also try this sort of place too. Thanks for sharing

Could try a old mud flap cut to size n use as a heat source possible 🤔 or a lid.

Hi, I want to make couple of these for our garden, we always have a lot of bumblebees in the spring but less over time.
I have a question for this design, does it not flood with water when it rains? I mean due to water seeping into the ground and running into it as a reservoir?

No, it should be fine as long as it’s not in a dip and you put some rocks in the bottom for drainage as I did. Any moss or hair or an old nest that you use to attract the bees should be elevated off the ground a little either by rocks or a bit of mesh something like that? xxx

@@Calastein Thanks a bunch, the elevation and soaking potential should do the trick. As for the insides I already have the local pet shop hooked and they will give me their used saw dust from rat and mouse cages 🙂 I am going to go all in on the attraction. Cheers and thank you from Czech Republic
