Also, Mycroft does care about Sherlock, more than constantly, and they do have ridiculous sibling rivalry, so the term Mycroft used as "archenemy" works quite well. Not to mention that Mycroft would have played as Sherlock's enemy whenever they played pirates when they were young. So yes, Mycroft is clever. No wonder why he's my favorite character lol
I think the idea that Mycroft would have bumped John off if he took the money is slightly wide of the mark. This was a test of John's character and he did pass. But the Spymaster in Mycroft would have happily spent Government money as extra motivation to continue to be Sherlock's counterpart. Never forget Sherlock's amused disappointment that John had not taken the money from him. One of the comments puts it perfectly by saying the two brothers just had a really weird relationship. Yes, especially given that Mycroft expresses a distaste of spies in "A Scandal in Belgravia". He was probably testing whether Sherlock's new friend and flatmate can be trusted or whether, as you say, he needed to be quietly disposed of.
Mycroft is awesome. He's been protecting Sherlock for ages. He wants to find out and deduce is John a suitable friend for Sherlock or not. He doesn't want someone who won't understand Sherlock to get close to his brother. Mycroft knows Sherlock to the core. He knows that it can be difficult for people to like Sherlock.

I think the reason why Mycroft offered to pay John to spy on Sherlock is b/c he was testing John to see if Sherlock could trust John. If Mycroft really wanted to monitor Sherlock, he could've done so in a 100 different ways. He didn't really need John for that.
Right! And Mycroft confirms this himself at the end of the episode when he asks his assistant to “upgrade the surveillance in both Sherlock and Watson”. He already has means to know what Sherlock is up to, so he was definitely testing John here.
I'll always remember showing this episode to my sister for the first time, she was so wrapped up in the suspense it was great and then out of nowhere my dad blurts out "that's his brother isn't it?" ...way to go dad 😂
This scene was done with so much subtlety. The upper hand passes from one to another. John is able to hold his own until Mycroft reveals that he's read John's therapist's notes. Great acting on both their parts. It was my 2nd favorite part of Series 1.1. My first was at the end when Mycroft says "Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson". I was so delighted the first time I saw it.
"You're not haunted by the war, Dr Watson. You miss it" The simplicity of the battlefield, and it's complexity. The battle lines, drawn and quartered to make right, and the ever flowing goal, to win, and by extension, survive.
Apart from usual Sherlock brilliance, what I liked is how Mark asserted his superiority, I absolutely loved his character, what a fabulous personality what an imposing aura he project while on screen. He could be the world's most feared villian or highest power wielder in government both shades suits him.
At this scene, I was so convinced that Mycroft is the enemy and wants to get Sherlock killed. Little did I knew that he always keeps a eye on his brother to make sure that he is safe.
He sure is. I love him. Awesome. I love this scene. Mycroft wants to deduce John and get to know him. Make sure that if John and Sherlock are gonna be around each other more that John will be able to understand Sherlock. Mycroft knows his brother. He knows it can be difficult for people to understand and to like Sherlock.
You know something else? I recently went on a binge of the show because I hadn't watched some of the scenes in so long. I can see just how similar Mycroft and Sherlock really are. Seriously, they're not that different. Their personalities and behavior par with each other a lot. They deal with their emotions quite differently, but other than that, yeah. They really are very similar.
Love that Mycroft pulls out the diary to refer to John’s medical notes for dramatic effect, even though he would have memorised them almost instantaneously.
This was good, but what i liked the most about this scene is Sherlocks second message that confirms what Mycroft said there and that Sherlock of course knows this as well.
Everyone seems to skip over this initial meeting where Mycroft first meets John Watson. Mycroft discovers John's limits and convictions as he scares the hell out of John revealing things about John that even John is hesitant to admit to himself.
How I wish they had stuck with this format--mystery, drama, and true tension between characters. The dialogue was sharp and witty and every character served a purpose. Seasons 3 and 4 devolved into cartoonish dribble as they kept trying to make villains that were bigger and scarier than Moriarty, and trying to make Mary a far more significant character than she really was. Both attempts were catastrophic failures. I prefer to keep my rewatching habits limited to seasons 1 and 2.
I wish they would've kept Moriarty out of the earlier season, use different villains in each season and make them more dangerous leading to Moriarty, so the writers dont have to worry abt making the next villain ended up less powerful and underwhelming than Moriarty. But oh well... Its already at season 4 so whats done is done
I always thought Magnusson was going to be an amazing follow up villain from Moriarty. The early glimpses of him in season 3 and the power games he played made him feel different yet still dangerous. Shame how it was handled though.
"A... difficult relationship" I'm actually reading the Young Sherlock book series right now, and it's very bittersweet to see that Sherlock and Mycroft actually start out with a more openly loving relationship, because you know they're going to fall out in the end. However, in the Conan Doyle short stories where I have seen Mycroft, their relationship never really came off as "difficult" to me, somehow. The two of them seemed to be rather at ease with each other, and the worst I could make of their relationship was that they both disapproved of what the other did, but nothing worse than that. You know?
This scene is perfect in every way - the dialogue, the acting, the setting, the music and the overall sound. All coming together to create a masterpiece of TV drama.
When you just see him standing there at the start, there is nothing. Then he starts talking and the facial expressions begin and....yes there it is. Damn Holmes boys.
Actually quite neatly encapsulates the problem with a lot of soldiers returning back "to the world". It's not that they are haunted and terrified by what they've done or seen, it's that they've grown used to it and can't (or don't want to) live a banal, normal "safe" life. Terrific scene.
I love how their dynamic changed over the course of this series. Watson in this episode thought of Mycroft as a threat. In the later episodes, he makes fun of him, but with a level of respect.
People keep talking about how great Mycroft's acting is, and it is, but the more important thing to observe is this explains why Watson is crazy enough to keep hanging around with Sherlock. The original book Watson & Holmes weren't as wild as these two, so slight reasonable evolutions to their characters had to be made. Making Watson an adrenaline junkie of sorts is perfect.
I watched this hundreds times and thought every single time that Mark and Martin were just super super brilliant! Chilling feeling watching it! Of course the script was perfect and the camera work is superb.
Mycroft : I want you to spies on Sherlock. John : No. Mycroft : I Havent mentioned a figure. John : Dont bother. Later in 221B. Sherlock : What a pity. We could split it in half. LOL.
It's been over four years since the last episode of this extraordinary program was aired. Will we ever see another? I doubt it. Still, there are very few things in this world that could gladden my heart as much as to hear that the BBC had gotten together with Moffat, Gatiss, Cumberbatch and Freeman to create another exciting four episode series of Sherlock. No doubt millions more would also have their hearts gladdened to hear such news.
I remember at the end of the episode, when Mycroft appears again, I was like "NO SHERLOCK! DON'T TRUST HIM! HE'S MORIARTY" and my brother was dying of laughs at my face when I discover he was Sherlock's Brother.
1:47 watching Watson slowly get more effected as Mycroft brings up personal information about his therapy is so impressive. I forget how good of an actor Freeman is
can you do a compilation of sherlock's greatest, and fastest, deduction moments? Eg: john's phone, 007 plane bit, the woman and dog bit in Baskerville, the mind palace in Baskerville, the great game ones etc etc. I think it would be great!
I thought I was the only one LOL. Obviously he looks younger here because he is, but his voice definitely went deeper as the years went on. Also just looking from Series 4 even to Series 3, he seems like a completely different person sometimes. Sherlock got more wrinkly and buff, John actually looks younger due to his new hairstyle. Nice one, John.
John’s (or rather Martin Freeman’s) hair got so much greyer during the course of the series. But the series also takes place over an extended period so it makes sense that the characters age too
Mycroft: Most people blunder around this city and all they see are streets and shops and cars, But when you walk with Sherlock Holmes, You see the battlefield. You have seen it already, Haven't you? John: What's wrong with my hand? Mycroft: You have an intemittent tremor in your left hand. Your therpsaist thinks it PTSD. She thinks you are haunted by memories of your military service. John: Who the hell are you? How do you know that? Mycroft: Fire her. She's got it the wrong way around. You are under stress right now. And your hand is perfectly steady. You're not haunted by the war Dr. Watson - You miss it. Welcome back.
John - Refuses the money , stays loyal to Sherlock Sherlock the next second : You should have taken it we could have shared the money, next time think it through.
John Thompson i think mycroft do use his talents as well, but he is not sherlock, he uses it differently. He literally controls the british government, why would one say that he does not utilize his talent fully?

The simplicity of the battlefield, and it's complexity. The battle lines, drawn and quartered to make right, and the ever flowing goal, to win, and by extension, survive.
Apart from usual Sherlock brilliance,
what I liked is how Mark asserted his superiority, I absolutely loved his character, what a fabulous personality what an imposing aura he project while on screen. He could be the world's most feared villian or highest power wielder in government both shades suits him.
Those umbrella skills though. Wow just wow.
At this scene, I was so convinced that Mycroft is the enemy and wants to get Sherlock killed. Little did I knew that he always keeps a eye on his brother to make sure that he is safe.
this is my absolute favorite scene!!! and the part where he tells him that he is not haunted by the war, is my ringtone :)
HAHA THAT'S BRILLIANT!!!
Mycroft is very cool!
Roy Clark yeees, obviously.
I used to think Mycroft's name was Microsoft lmao.
blackham7 I used to think so too
He sure is. I love him.
Mycroft being able to read Watson is a hint that he is a Holmes. Both of the brothers have that talent of reading small details.
But Moriarty and Irene can do that too so.
I just love everything. The music, the lighting, the sound production, and, especially, the performances.
The way Mycroft Holmes said that John Watson misses the war and not haunted by it is so spine-chilling with making John choose a side.
"your not haunted by the war,
you miss it."
woah. I think that's genuinely the smartest thing he has ever said... :0
This was good, but what i liked the most about this scene is Sherlocks second message that confirms what Mycroft said there and that Sherlock of course knows this as well.
'When you walk with Sherlock Holmes, you see the battlefield', there will always be great many Holmes but Mark Gatiss is the real Mycroft.
I liked Eurus.
Same here
Her episode was amazing, I seriously that one was the best of all the seasons
I wish they would've kept Moriarty out of the earlier season, use different villains in each season and make them more dangerous leading to Moriarty, so the writers dont have to worry abt making the next villain ended up less powerful and underwhelming than Moriarty. But oh well... Its already at season 4 so whats done is done
I always thought Magnusson was going to be an amazing follow up villain from Moriarty. The early glimpses of him in season 3 and the power games he played made him feel different yet still dangerous. Shame how it was handled though.
The moment you realize that Mycroft is actually a Kingsman with his umbrella
Kingsman name: Percival
Hell, that smile at the end killed me...
I was so convinced that he was Moriarty!!! I remember being super excited! And then he turned out to be Mycroft and I got even more excited!!!
"A... difficult relationship"
I'm actually reading the Young Sherlock book series right now, and it's very bittersweet to see that Sherlock and Mycroft actually start out with a more openly loving relationship, because you know they're going to fall out in the end. You know?
Ok.
This scene is perfect in every way - the dialogue, the acting, the setting, the music and the overall sound. All coming together to create a masterpiece of TV drama.
Lol i Love mycroft hes such a babe
ikr lol
Haha thank god I'm not the only one... I have an intense attraction to him.
Danielle Silva thank you
Indeed he is so cute 😍😍😍
When you just see him standing there at the start, there is nothing. Then he starts talking and the facial expressions begin and....yes there it is. Damn Holmes boys.
I love Mycroft. He's one of my favorite characters in this series.
I like Mycroft's character - cold , calculated, cunning and funny - the iceman.
When I first watched this scene, it blew my mind. My mind is STILL blown.
You know, I never noticed Mycroft slip at 1:14 before lol Look at him trying to act like nothing happened
2:24 Mark gatiss handles the umbrella so well. Last time I tried that it flung a metre ahead of me and hit a kid. I ran away when she started crying
Actually quite neatly encapsulates the problem with a lot of soldiers returning back "to the world". It's not that they are haunted and terrified by what they've done or seen, it's that they've grown used to it and can't (or don't want to) live a banal, normal "safe" life. Terrific scene.
This silly, over-dramatic, over-protective big brother...how we love him
I've got hots for Mycroft in this scene... Not gonna lie
I love of how John when he first met Sherlock was like “brilliant” but when he met Mycroft was like “who the hell are you”.
This has to be the one of the most bad-arse scenes in Sherlock depicting the next-level intelligence of Mycroft's character in a proper way.
Oh I miss Sherlock. The first two series were one of the best things ever.
As long as I see clips I can easily wait til Christmas. Keep uploading it makes me happy and makes my day! ❤️
Makes me want to rewatch the whole series again.
When MYCROFT HOLMES tells you to subscribe, you do it.
Without hesitation...
I only realised now, that Sherlock's message "Could be dangerous" directly plays off of Mycroft saying that Watson misses the war
Mycroft’s umbrella is a paid actor
The clear genius of this writing, one is both terrified and impressed by Mycroft's intelligence and Mark Gatiss, what an actor 👏
Ahhh season 1, the golden years.
I'm just here to listen to Mycroft's posh accent
Mark gatiss does pomp so well.
What is amazed me more about Sherlock's family, is how so ordinary parents could grow up such a three extraordinary children.
I would never call Wanda Ventham ‘ordinary’…
I watched this hundreds times and thought every single time that Mark and Martin were just super super brilliant! Chilling feeling watching it! Of course the script was perfect and the camera work is superb.
Mycroft : I want you to spies on Sherlock.
John : No.
Mycroft : I Havent mentioned a figure.
John : Dont bother.
Later in 221B.
Sherlock : What a pity. We could split it in half.
LOL.
...... next time, think it through .....
I love Mycroft... DON'T DIE
Mycroft Holmes is the most badass character in Sherlock. Imagine handling Sherlock, Eurus and Moriarty at the same time!
Is it just me or does Mycroft look much younger and have a more mellifluous voice in this episode compared to Series 4?
ASB Well 2009 -2017 is quite a leap. Even Ben and Martin have prominent laugh lines...
But the series also takes place over an extended period so it makes sense that the characters age too
I love Mycroft!
I love the idea that there are a ton more people like Sherlock in the world. He’s just the only one that actually lives above ground.
"welcome back....." so delightfully creepy in all it infer.
John - Refuses the money , stays loyal to Sherlock
Sherlock the next second :
You should have taken it we could have shared the money, next time think it through.
“You’re very loyal very easy.” - For some reason I keep repeating this phrase to myself a lot.
Mycroft is brilliant but does not fully utilize his talents in the way Sherlock does.
John Thompson i think mycroft do use his talents as well, but he is not sherlock, he uses it differently. He literally controls the british government, why would one say that he does not utilize his talent fully?
He does fully utilize his in more elegant way
Mycroft works for the government and sherlock is a detective, but yes their skills are very useful in detective work
Mycroft Holmes is my favorite Sherlock character ❤❤❤ Mark Gatiss is phenomenal. Love this scene.
In this one scene Mark Gatiss cements himself as the one of the best characters in the show and arguably the best Mycroft ever
