- Here is the video everyone wanted to see....How did the " Old Timers " Timber their mines. Here is one way that it was done for Drift mines and we give you a complete demonstration and build a complete set so if you want to make one yourself.... you can.
Later we will make videos on Shaft , Winze, Stope and Raise Timbering.

Thank you so much !
Man its insane how much work and lumber went into the old mines
I know...right
Where where you when I was doing my mine?!
Hey cody!! i love you videos !!!!
underground... lol
Hey Cody! I am subscribed to you also. Love your channel. Jeff is really funny and has really great information. You should check out his other videos. See ya next time! :-)
depends if theres gold in your mine ;)
Man, I love your videos. You'd have a blast with Jeff's videos, he's pretty informative & fun. Learned quite a lot from you two!
I'm amazed that something so niche exists on RUclips. Best find of the day.
Jeff, you're a wealth of knowledge. Thank you sir.
I know it’s been seven years, but thank you for making this video because you are the only guy in RUclips that shows how to timber a mind the old-fashioned way. And the old-fashioned way is the cheapest way because I can’t shotcrete a mind shaft with my small budget.
You're very welcome! we have more on the way that you will love
You have been such a help! My friend and I are starting our own mine. The safety aspects are where we felt the weakest and these older videos of yours are such a damn good resource!
glad to help you may like this video too ruclips.net/video/BIhX6rFtzU4/видео.html
Sometimes digging in the dirt is good clean fun. It's important to support mining while we are still able to enjoy it. Before the politicians outlaw our way of life. Jeff does a great job educating and entertaining.
Thanks Corky .....me and Slim love to hear that.
JS
About time some one did this ..sweet thank you
Thanks Steven.. we thought so too.
JS
Thank you 🙏 Mr. Williams , On showing us how to set up a mine ,, Blessings ,..my friend , god be with you ..
Thanks BD and you betcha
Hey Jeff and Slim, great video guys! I've really been looking forward to hearing you talk about this because like you said, it's definately a dying art. It's crazy to see this style of timbering on Exploring Abandoned Mines channel in mines 100+ years old and still holding up the weight of the world. It really illustrates how effective it is when it's done properly. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share some of your old timer knowledge with us! You by far have the best mining content on RUclips and I hope you guys continue to make great videos :)
Thanks .....I know huh. there are two other methods for drift timbering but this one works for us. Thanks for the great comments ......we always look forward to reading them and we will.
JS
Nice job I see lots of old timbering in mines mostly on the collar but never thought about how it was done. I find the old ore chute construction really interesting.
Thanks and if we can we will demo one for you.
JS
thanks. good to see it been done ,read about it but seeing it is something else cheers
thanks for showing us how to shore up our mind tunnels drifts whatever you want to call him. I feel as if I built it myself you did such a good job of explaining. I thank you very much.
you betcha David.
The true American dream!! Stay happy work hard and Have Fun! So cmon, lets go!!!
Very cool man, some food for thought though:
- Cordless Impact with Structural Torx Screws
- Your ground is fine for the drift size, have someone doing the development round ahead of and the GS guy behind. If you're not comfortable use a 3 piece pre-assembled gantry style to get a guy back at the face.

This is a great tutorial...Thanks for posting this !
I am in love with your tiny rail cart! I had one like that when I was little in my own tiny mine my grandpa helped me dig.
ANOTHER 50 GREAT SHOW...
wow ...another 50.....well we are gonna have to work really hard to keep this going ....so ...you know what I' I am gonna say huh....
So C'mon....Lets Go !!!!!!
yep...
thanks a million I am not going to timber a mine anytime soon but the philosophy of the timebring is apeealing for other things.
you betcha
Proud of being an underground miner!!! Great video! Regards from Peru!
Reminds me of a trip I made one time on the train ride through the mountain at Knott's Berry Farm.
Hi Jeff, That was gerrreat!
Timbering and bending rail for the curve could be a challenge. You'll have to come up with a "jim crow" for bending the rail. And I think you'll need to build a small electric trammer too - another interesting project. I know YOU can do it!!! Because your the man! Take care and stay safe my busy friend. And say hi to Silver Spurs Lila, Pops, Nevada Jack, and of course that old bag of bones Slim.
Thanks Tony..uh I mean Steve..Lol No worries my friend...we have that one figured out too. We have something already that works pretty well and electric trammer will be next. Thanks again for everything and let us know how the panning goes with Cecilia .
JS
Great video. ThAnks for sharing
HI Bridgette ......long time since we heard from you ...Thanks....glad you liked the video/
JS
Well when I come to Nevada to be a gold miner, now I've got a heads-up on how to keep the rocks from coming down on my head, thanks Jeff!
lol cody! i have my own drift and ive been wondering how to do this for a long time. awesome vid jeff and be safe down in there.
Thanks and glad it was of some help and we will thanks.
JS
Educational and entertaining. Always a pleasure watching your videos. Thank you again Sir.
you betcha my friend.
JS
coming together very nice!
yes it is but hard going.
JS
Jeff, WOW!! you do it all.. FYI if you ever need any help with one of theses jobs, I work for knowledge..
you put out so much info. I want to pick your brain all day..
thanks again for all your hard work!!
Tatterr
pretty much ....... will keep that in mind ...you betcha
You're like a carpenter and Geologist all in one! 💥🇨🇦🤪🤗
and miner
thank you Jeff
you betcha my friend.
Great information. Cant wait to see the gold your getting out of there. You are going to show us, right? Hey to Slim. Thanks for sharing.....Rhino
you bet we will.
JS
you give me the will to keep going
I really enjoy your videos I know very weird but like support structures in mines it is amazing feat to burrow underground and how to support it thanks from making these videos.
thanks .
Thanks for your answers Jeff !!!, your videos are always comical and very informative and I wish I was able to support you but I have a low income social security disability , I would love to help you but I am seven foot tall that's why I ask about your drift hight , I would have to crawl around on my hands and knees !!!,
I love Nevada and gold hunting I hope some day to be able to spend some time with you just to gleen some knowledge from you maybe next year !!!, Sincerly big Del , 😎👋👋
no worries my friend ....just keep on a watching and commenting . Maybe one day we will see you here in the High Desert.

In NYC, Con Edison has to make steam boxes with thicker wood than that. They get right into the ground, and the wood they use is beautiful. You also see A LOT of it in dumpsters to be thrown out! If you got a trailer, you could load it up and have a lot of good timber...for free. I should start a channel telling people tricks. haha
Very informative
I just found your channel last night and subscribed. I've always wanted to buy property out west and work on my own tunnel. Such a cool channel.
thanks for the Sub Duke ...thanks
You are amazing bro
Thank you Jeff. We had to stop the drift, after a month tunneling the landowner saw how much we were getting and wanted 80% instead of the original 40% so I collapsed it in...
+@ffec+ yep he's old so. it can wait
Always happen like that. You have an agreement and some gets greedy.
great info jeff thanks love the channel thumbs up
thanks.
As a West Virginian, my Lord this resonates with me.
Great video my brutha! Informative, funny and very possibly life saving!
Thanks my brutha from another mother and we have more on the way too so....you know what I am gonna say huh...So C'mon....Lets Go !!!!!!!

I have a question that amounts to a concern, and that is... If I take a deck screw and put it half way in a board or a vice, I can shear it off with a simple whack with a hammer. If I do that with a decent nail, it simply bends. Pacific Rim nails have been known to shear though. Does it matter if the screws have little to no strength in shear? I am asking for my own project, not a a troll or anything like that. I don't understand underground movement enough to know the effects are or are not. Thanks for the awesome videos. I now constantly check daily to see if you a new one out. lol Love them all.
Such great lumber you're using , furniture grade ,clear stuff ! Looks to be pine ..is it locally acquired ? Anyway , gold mining looks to be great fun from figuring out your workings (timbering) to the tantalizing process of findin' the shiney...very entertaining and educational ..thanks...
thank you jeff, ill be sure to go i have been in the store once and was like a kid in a candy store or me in home depot haha. i cant wait to get out in there and find more. ill be looking forward to your next video until I then great adventures and great gold!!! wahoo!!!! thanks jeff
Hi Chris....always our pleasure and let us know how it goes..trust me you will cause it is there. We have more vids on the way so stay tuned and thanks for the great comment.
JS
best channel out there
Thanks Gabriel
Cool video, was always wondering how this was done. Thanks for making, Jeff. You earned yourself a subscriber.
Thanks for the sub!
Somehow I felt the wood will rot as moisture may enter the tunnel. Thus I prefer rebar and concrete to combat possible moisture. Also noticed you are trying to gasp for more air, perhaps put a fan to the deep end and blow outside may ease air flow.
Great video man. Now I know how to do it for when I get my mine goin
I like that you have good cameras
Thanks.
JS
excellent.
Nice video. Thank you Jeff.. Will you be also doing some video how to timber a small mine shaft?
its on the way.
dude iv learned so much from you, slim, and cody(s lab)
really happy to hear that , Cody is a really good teacher.
JS
Jeff you are one crazy sob! love your videos keep up the great work!
Thanks Smokey and we will.
JS
love the videos Jeff and Slim keep up the great work
Thanks.
Great video Jeff, hope all the hard work pays off.
Thanks and we do too.
JS
Thanks again
you betcha
“Some of you are crazy enough to try it yourself” yes, that’s why I’m here
Your crazy! Love your videos
Thanks.
JS
you have some real good video and I learn a lot now go and find that big pay streak GL
Thanks and we will.
JS
yay i like you and cody
Hi Jeff great video. Have you ever seen peg and notch technique used to accomplish the sections?
yep and square sets too.
That mine is looking good, plenty wood.
How's the gold like in that mine, are there big gold nuggets?
Jeff when you dig really deep you will need fresh air to breathe.
I have heard stories of miners getting sick with black lungs infection working in underground mines.
I only watch your videos and am anxious to see some gold, I can just imagine how you guys feel finding gold.
slim is working the cameras really good underground.
Yeeehaaaww nice and safe bit o carpentry their very good demo well done
Love your videos! I noticed that you are using phillips screws. Star drive screw heads drive easier and require less arm force. That'll give you more strength for digging the shiny. LOL
Nicely.
Have you ever used any type of air system to drive back fill in around the timbering? Even though it would be far finer grit and possibly prone to sifting it would fit really tightly into a lot of fine cracks and fill it a lot more tightly.
Lookin' like a work of art Jeff... Yea ha! Were is the gold?
Thanks and believe it or not we are on top of the clay layer that holds the Gold so I guess you could say we are standing on it. We will go back and extract the clay and take it to the surface to dry. After it drys....then we crush it and run it through a Gold cube.
JS
It would make a awesome rustic foyer for a house
I think would be pretty cool if Jeff and Cody would get together on a mining project it would be a pretty sweet video
well...we put in the word to him so you never know huh.
JS
I want that clay you keep diggin up. Looks like good pottery clay.
another crossover....maybe....
Yeah clay is a good resource with actual $$$ value
This is interesting and something people should learn in case you wanted to make a tunnel to get out of your house in case of home invasion of zombies.
One more thing I like funny videos.............perfect
Your always interesting and always a good laff, thank you for your time , even tho I hunt for placer and or flower gold here in Oregon, I still am learning after five years but you have helped me find even more thanks again!
Maybe you can do some more on the South Fork?
I'm on the N. Umpqua not far from where the S. Umpqua collide, but the shiney is on the South.
The shiney on the N. is too far up in the Mts. In the high Cascades.
Any thoughts on that?
This was a very interesting video. I noticed that the overhead boards are running in the direction of the mine (forward and back). Instead of doing that, what if you had the overhead boards going from left to right? Would that configuration be more stable?
Soft hand here. But im a nerd and i love this.
I cant find the link to be a patron. I have learned a lot from watching you and in the process of claiming my first mine here in AZ.
I am now officially a patreon! keep em coming jeff!
Thanks Dennis and yes you are. We really appreciate that.
JS
amazing

thegoldladystore.com/
I like your videos a lot
Thanks.
JS
Hey Jeff Williams you got some cool videos. I really like the video where you're playing the guitar so awesome.. I was asking have you ever found dinosaur fossils by accident will prospecting..?
Thanks Mike, like hearing that and we have more on the way . We just might make some more of those in the future if you like. no we haven't but we have heard of it in Berlin, Nevada . The prospectors found the vertebrae of the Ichthyosaurand used them for bowls and dishes. Now it is a State Park.
JS
Fantastic Jeff love it ;-)
Thanks.
JS
exactly how do you backfill it? are you shoving handfuls of dirt up onto the boards? or you just keep poking the tunnel roof til it collapses and backfills for you?
Me and my 6 year old son love watching you n slim. my son wants to hunt gold in nevada now lol we live in the Uk. Please could you give us a shout out on your next vid? My sons name is Harvey & mines Lee Matthews. I know it would really make his day. Thanks for the fun and informational entertaining videos Jeff Williams. So come on lets go!
always love to hear that and we will see what we can do.
JS
+Ask Jeff Williams thank you for getting back to us! :)
Milwaukee hydraulic drive impact gun for driving screws. you will never look back. well worth the 250
Thank you iam on it don't be a slim let's Go
Awesome
Oh that's cool I see you always wearing it must be pretty strong haha well I am gonna go in your site their and fix up to help you out ⛏⛏
If I ever have a question I will ask Jeff Williams. 👍
thats me
Jeff when did they first realize or put "train" tracks in mines as a transport system?
Do you think water will seep in if there is a lot of rain on the surface. For porous rock like limestone?
Good job Jeff on the video question I'm curious how far are you going to make the draft. I like to see on a video of that how take material out of the mine and process it and get the gold out of it .
Thanks and not sure how far it will go ...that all depends on if the Gold keeps going. We are making a vid on that process so stay tuned.
JS
Your videos I love because 1. I like Cowboys 2. I love mining
me too
Nails man
SHOULD LEAVE GAPS IN BETWEEN THE LAGGING BOARDS TO ALLOW FOR SWELLING GROUND. THANKS FOR THE INFO. IT'D BE FUN TO DO A VIDEO USING ROUND TIMBER!
Looks like a lot of gold in that timber.lol
That's why you cut your own if you have the option
Probably some old miners stole lumber from older unused mines and shacks.
There's a vid out there about a gypsum mine in Riverside county i think that has or had civil defense cannisters from 1964 for water, waste disposal, food.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing, why mind gold when you can fleece it off the miner in the hardware store :P
That is easily 1/2 ounce worth in timber where I am.. guessing that is about 1- 1.3 ton of material so you would need 2 ounce to the ton mine just to break even on sets XD
Hey Jeff wouldn't it be a good idea to paint your sets when you get them in to protect the from moister?
I had asked a engineer who was online, RUclips about a structure for mining braces.
It goes as such:
After a tunnel has been scraped out, at the top wall, parallel to wall across, one can dig a four by six engraving to sit inside the dug out mold.
Then place a 4 × 6 inside the engraved shape fitted mold, using the Rockwall siding to apply planks above without beams to support the upper roof.
Do you believe that's possible?
not familiar with that process
@@Askjeffwilliams Yeah, because it's an idea I asked to confirm with a structural engineer
These are the productions that made you famous .
Hmmm that's a pretty good sized knot in the middle of that cap... seem to remember something about not having knots in the cap.
ruclips.net/video/z4S9uoUy8js/видео.htmlm14s
I know right ....Slim tried to pick the best wood for the cap and look what he gives me .... I tell ya no respect .....no respect.
