Wonderful job done by Robie Lester, she has such a beautiful voice. When I watch this and any another RankinBass special I'm always in awe at how incredible the animation is, and how amazing the puppets look. Jessica looks lovely.
I thought I was odd for getting emotional and teary eyed about this lovely song. I am not sure if I was this way in the 70s when I was in elementary school, but as an adult I always felt like this. I'm glad many others here feel the same way I do.
I'd forgotten about the song until I watched Santa Claus is Comin' to Town on DVD some years ago. Seeing the animation triggered my memory of seeing the scene as a child. The effects were so mesmerizing to my younger self.
You can really see the inspired by Anime look in the hand drawn figure of Miss Jessica walking as well as the head of her in front of the trippy background. Thanks, several Anime Studios in Japan for doing the outsourced work on these specials (Why yes, Rankin/Bass were doing animation outsourcing before it was mainstream. While these specials are America's favorite Christmas Tales, the whole time we all were watching Japanese Animation (outsourced Japanese Animation but Japanese Animation nonetheless) whether we realized it or not)
If you notice in the credits of this and all Rakin/Bass specials you see Japanese names like Tad. In fact some of these animators have gone to work on Topcraft which was responsible for masterpieces like Nausicaa as well as joined in Toei Animation, which created well known anime franchices we all know and love like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. The Rakin and Bass specials are not the only example of an American company outsourcing their production to be made in Japan. My Spyderco Delica pocketknife made in Seki City with VG-10 steel among some other Spydercos, as well as many luxury marques on Japanese cars like Lexus and Acura are also good examples of Americans trusting the land of the rising sun to make our stuff. And boy, they make them great!
As long as I can remember, this has been my favourite song in the movie. It's so beautiful! And it stands out because it's so different from all the other songs. Its only flaw in my eyes is that it's so short. I could go for at least three more verses.
LONG POST ALERT! As a four-year-old boy at Christmastime, I can remember my mother taking me to the public library in Eudora, Kansas and renting VHS tapes of classic Rankin/Bass Christmas TV specials. One of these was the 1970 special “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town”, which tells the story of how Kris Kringle became Santa Claus. As a kid, I don’t think certain parts of the special really registered with me very much, but I’m pretty sure I liked it. Now that I’m a father, and I’m sharing this special with my own young daughter for the first time, I tend to watch “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” with a different eye than I did as a little boy. When I watched this special with my wife last Christmas, I realized something that I never realized before; and watching it tonight, I’m more sure of it now than ever before. Kris Kringle is NOT the most important character in this special. But how can that be? He’s Santa Claus, the main character, the character whom the special is named for! Yes, Kris Kringle might be the main character, but that doesn’t equate to the most important character. If you watched the 1970s version of “Match Game”, you knew Gene Rayburn, the show’s host, was the star; but the most important person on the show was Richard Dawson, the panelist whom all the contestants wanted to help them win the Super Match. The same is true here. Kris Kringle is the star of the show, but he is not the most important character. So who is? The most important character in “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” is Miss Jessica, the schoolteacher who went on to become Mrs. Claus. And the reason she is the most important is because she has the most significant character arc. Kris Kringle never really changes from start to finish, but Miss Jessica undergoes a near total transformation. Allow me to explain: For context, about a third of the way into the special when Kris Kringle arrives in Sombertown to give the children toys, his timing could not be any worse. Burgermeister Meisterburger, the evil mayor of Sombertown, has gone on a power trip and outlawed toys in the city on pain of imprisonment in the dungeon. As Kris, who is totally unaware of the law, begins giving the children toys, Miss Jessica makes her first appearance. She admonishes the children, warning them not to play with toys. As we get our first look at her, we see she is part and parcel of Sombertown. The city is gray, lifeless, and dull, and so are the people and children who live there - and that includes Miss Jessica. Her complexion is pale, her dress is a dull shade of blue, and she follows the Burgermeister’s beliefs about the evils of toys without question - even quoting his new law almost verbatim. She stands in contrast to Kris, whose bright red suit and vibrant facial complexion stand out in the colorless Sombertown. In that moment, Kris gives her a toy - a china doll, something she wanted as a little girl but never got from her parents. Something is reawakened in Jessica that she didn’t know was still there - the little girl within that has been buried by all the cares and demands of the society she was raised in. She begins to question the legitimacy of the Burgermeister’s law, and in doing so becomes a stuttering mess while Kris goes back to handing out toys. Later, Jessica searches for Kris and gives him letters from the children asking for more toys. From that point on, she becomes the middle-woman between Kris and the children; she tells Kris what the children want and about the Burgermeister’s plans to stop him, and she tells the children how they can get around the Burgermeister’s restrictions. At this stage, she is dealing with divided loyalties. On the one hand, she helps Kris in his mission to bring toys to the children, while at the same time working for the Burgermeister as a schoolteacher. The Burgermeister rages against Kris’ toy deliveries, yet never suspects that Jessica is a covert supporter of Kris. That changes when the Burgermeister decides to ambush Kris. Jessica learns of his plot and goes to warn Kris, only to find him gone when she reaches the Kringle headquarters. Unfortunately, the Burgermeister’s henchmen have followed her and arrest the Kringles and Kris’ other allies. Yet, for some odd reason, Jessica is NOT arrested. Kris is caught in the Burgermeister’s ambush and sent to the dungeon. When Jessica goes to the Burgermeister and pleads for mercy for Kris and the Kringles, he harshly dismisses her, telling her, “Good-bye, good luck, and good riddance.” This implies that she has lost her job as a schoolteacher. It's at this point that Jessica undergoes her most significant change yet. She now realizes she can no longer live with divided loyalty and decides that she belongs with Kris. As she sings a powerful ballad, “My World Is Beginning Today”, her dress becomes a more vibrant shade of blue, the sash around her dress changes color to gold, and her complexion changes from lifeless pale to a more lifelike complexion like Kris’. With nothing to lose now, Jessica uses magic corn kernels from Kris’ ally, the Winter Warlock, to give some reindeer the power to fly. The reindeer rescue Kris and the Kringles from the dungeon and take them to safety. Afterward, Jessica pledges to go wherever Kris goes from now on. Later, when Kris decides to start calling himself “Claus”, Jessica agrees to share that name with him, and they are married in a grove of pine trees on Christmas Eve in a beautiful ceremony that melts my heart every time I watch it. From there, the little band of “outlaws” moves on and sets up shop in the North Pole. It’s here that Jessica Claus ditches her blue dress once and for all; she now dons a red Kringle dress with a white apron. Her purpose in life is now to be at her husband’s side as he continues his life’s mission to bring the finest toys to children around the world at Christmas. By the end of the story, Jessica is in the most different place from where she started. She is no longer part and parcel of Sombertown, but part and parcel of the Kringles. She has grown old with her husband, now known as Santa Claus. She reads letters with him, looks up into the starry night sky with him, and helps him choose Christmas Eve as the night when he makes his journey around the world. The last we see of her comes after the end credits have rolled, as narrator Fred Astaire sings one last chorus of the title song; she stands in the window, says goodbye to Santa, and sends him downstairs and out the door to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. The character arc of Jessica - from Miss Jessica the schoolteacher to Jessica Claus, wife of Santa - is the most significant arc in “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town”. Her journey through the story teaches us three important lessons. First, it is good and right to question some of the laws and rules imposed on us and whether they are legitimate or not. Second, we cannot live with divided loyalties for very long; eventually, we will have to choose where we stand, and hopefully, we will take our stand for what is right. And third, the measure of a well-lived life is not in how scrupulously we follow rules and laws imposed by vain man in his petty authority, but in giving of our time and talents to bring joy to those who need to experience what it feels like to be loved. Jessica the teacher was taught all these lessons through her life experience and interactions with Kris Kringle. And when you think about it, it’s pretty remarkable that a stop-motion animated special whose target audience was children could teach such mature lessons that still resonate fifty-three years after the special aired for the first time. May we find ways to live out those lessons in our own lives not only at Christmas, but all throughout the year.
I watched this on 📺 many times before internet let alone RUclips came along & THIS song, speaks volumes LOUDLY. The birds letting Jessica's hair down...a symbol of change, letting loose, liberation. A door closed on her & a new opens. The Tears of Elation Floodgates are buckling, they cannot take the strain...& I DON'T WANT THEM TO😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
He didn't change Burgemeister, although he would've if that dumbass Grimbsy hadn't informed him he was breaking one of his own laws. Guess they both died and went to hell.
This song reminds me of my childhood during the past. It reminds me of my Grandma D, Grandma G, and Grandpa G! It also reminds me of my friends like Leah Thompson, Brooke Bell, Christina Bettin, Rylee Billings, Ella Clark, Bronte Jones, Abigail Hillburger, Abigail Teal, Olivia Donato, Elizabeth Kent, Ella Spillman, Grace Scottow, Ayla Batz and Joan Reichert!
I’ve seen this special SO many times, over the last 30 years… tonight I saw a “full length version” of this trippy scene. What the heck? I loved every groovy second of it. 😎
I don't remember ever seeing this sequence before this year. And, it's a really pretty song, and the animation is beautiful, but honestly, it doesn't feel necessary to the story.
I'm really disturbed to learn in comments here that this beautiful amazing song has recently been cut out! Yes it is psychedelic visually but what's wrong with that? Would they also just ban stuff like Yellow Submarine or The Point? I just don't get it
I think it's more like it just doesn't really advance the plot or anything, so they cut it out for pacing reasons (or, more cynically, to make time for more commercials).
What you have here is a story about a colorful hero rebelling against an uptight and humorless system and living in the wilderness with a forest spirit - it does sound very '60s when you think about it.
You know, I don't think I ever appreciated how james bond-esque this musical number is. It's extremely fitting considering Jessica's moments away from leaving her old life behind to bust the love of her life out of prison all while realizing what matters most to her. If that doesn't scream 007 I don't know what does.
They probably could only afford 1 big named celebrity per special and they chose Fred Astaire.Besides about Karen, you have to consider when they recorded the special. Sure, by the time it originally aired she was an successful recording star, but who exactly knows when they recorded the special? It could had been late 1969, early 1970, or mid 1970 for example. Since it premired on December 13th 1970.
This song Is so peaceful! I only wish it had a more epic finish since the ending sounds incomplete: it just fades away and that’s it. I also wish this was slightly longer 🥰
I just watched this show tonight (12-23-21), and this scene was cut out (to make room for commercials). It's too bad, because the song is marvelous wonderful. But then, the 'brilliant' movie producers nearly cut 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' from "The Wizard of Oz."
This song is so …almost Joni Mitchell-esc, I understand why it often gets cut since it’s so different than the period piece they’ve tried to create in this movie, but it was without a doubt my favorite in this movie since I was watching it as a little kid
I've been having dreams of past friends visiting. Us spending time together and laughing. Last night I dreamed of a girl, and us finding out how much we had in common, like enjoying this song. And I fell for her a little bit. I was thinking about the future and how long it would last. I didn't know it would be over when I woke up. It's sweet in some way, but I wish I could continue to feel the wholeness of these dreams awakened.

Wow this Christmas spirit is a hell of a drug
😭
Awesome song. Really fits the era. Feels like a nice folky pop song moreso than a Christmas song.
Allow me to explain:
For context, about a third of the way into the special when Kris Kringle arrives in Sombertown to give the children toys, his timing could not be any worse.
Jesuz
I watched this on 📺 many times before internet let alone RUclips came along & THIS song, speaks volumes LOUDLY.
The birds letting Jessica's hair down...a symbol of change, letting loose, liberation. A door closed on her & a new opens.
The Tears of Elation Floodgates are buckling, they cannot take the strain...& I DON'T WANT THEM TO😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Not going to lie, when I Watched this again after so many years ago, i cried, her voice is just so sweet....
Santa changed the lives of everyone he met.
I’m just realizing how important he is today
He didn't change Burgemeister, although he would've if that dumbass Grimbsy hadn't informed him he was breaking one of his own laws. Guess they both died and went to hell.
She Had A Beautiful Singing Voice. She Was Very Talented. She Looked Really Cute Too. RIP Robie L.
Even as a little kid watching this - it would make me sob and it still breaks me as a 50+ year old adult woman. It's so beautiful!!
Her hair is so beautiful
My favorite song in the movie !! I was so young when I first watched this & I still love it I’m 25 now
I’ve seen this special SO many times, over the last 30 years… tonight I saw a “full length version” of this trippy scene. What the heck? I loved every groovy second of it. 😎
I don't remember ever seeing this sequence before this year. And, it's a really pretty song, and the animation is beautiful, but honestly, it doesn't feel necessary to the story.
@@corruptedmask Probably because it was cut out of recent broadcasts.
These old Christmas specials are artistic masterpieces.
Yep. I love Rankin and Bass Christmas movies.
This song is not about a man but it is about opening your eyes for the time ever. Love this song❤❤❤❤
It’s sad they don’t make movies like this anymore
My thanks to Robie Lester for that beautiful performance as Jessica singing "My world is beginning today". Rest in peace Robie .
Watching this again, I’m just thinking about how much LSD the animators took for the Hand-Drawn sequences (it was a product of its time, after all).
I have watched these specials every year since I was little and I still feel like I never remember what happens in them LOL
I make it my personal mission to watch this special every year. I love this song!
This is a beautifully written melody, I cried when I heard it at age 7 and still do at 60
I'm really disturbed to learn in comments here that this beautiful amazing song has recently been cut out!
It's to save time
Such a wonderful song with serious psychedelic influence ✌️❤️💚
This was my favorite scene of this movie ever as a child still is to this day!!!
Make no mistake, I like all of the songs in this special, but this is my top favorite.
this will always feel so magical ♥️❄️🎄
What you have here is a story about a colorful hero rebelling against an uptight and humorless system and living in the wilderness with a forest spirit - it does sound very '60s when you think about it.
yes
@00:43 I am lovin’ the sound of her singing voice
My whole family forgot that this whole segment existed in the movie mostly because it’s always cut from television to make time.
You know, I don't think I ever appreciated how james bond-esque this musical number is. It's extremely fitting considering Jessica's moments away from leaving her old life behind to bust the love of her life out of prison all while realizing what matters most to her. If that doesn't scream 007 I don't know what does.
You do you. Convincing arguments
I wish Karen Carpenter had sung this!!
Me too!
That would've been SWEET!!!
Oh my God. With her wonderful voice, she could have turned this into a #1 hit! Not that the original isn't already perfect.
That early 70s music sound tho 👌🏼😌
I watched it all the time when my mom recorded it on TV and still love it. This song is a beautiful song.
This song Is so peaceful! I only wish it had a more epic finish since the ending sounds incomplete: it just fades away and that’s it. I also wish this was slightly longer 🥰
It's a shame they cut this song when they air it on network television.
We only watch it on DVD for this song.
This whole movie is just one big acid trip and I love it
Always wanted a woman like Jessica. So loyal and beautiful and fearless. God where are the women like her?
You can REALLY tell this was animated in Japan.
This song did nothing for me as a kid. But grown up me? Oh man was this song slept on by me 😭
The same thing with me! It gets me every time I have listened to it as an adult.
I love how everything in Sombertown is millennial grey until Jessica pops some X and everything is psychedelic colors! I want what she's having
One of my favorite Christmas movies going up ❤❤🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🎅🎅🤶🤶
They cut this part out now... Why???
This is the most 70s thing ever
I agree
This song is really good brings back the old days
I'm not going to lie but she is beautiful with her hair down!! ❤❤
Thank you for sharing this beautiful song!!
This is pretty neat actually I can’t believe they snuck this in there
This is the moment when your draw drops and you’re like damn this girl can sing!
Miss Jessica is precious. ❤️
1:19- 1:28 get chills every time
So gorgeous she is
I hate it when they cut this song off when they show it on the CBS channel. Same for the Gift for Toy song.
This song is so …almost Joni Mitchell-esc, I understand why it often gets cut since it’s so different than the period piece they’ve tried to create in this movie, but it was without a doubt my favorite in this movie since I was watching it as a little kid
What a lovely song. 💕💕
I hope that your dream comes true. I've had dreams like that, too.
I hope your dreams come true, God bless your heart.
omg my childhood is being unlocked again!!
Reminds me of my childhood and the innocence that comes along with it
I freaking love this song and merry Christmas 2018
I love this song. My mom used to to sing it to me all the time.
That's so sweet. How old are you?
My all time favorite Rankin Bass song
