Are you in the TRF? Have you considered joining? Are you struggling to find legal places to trail ride? Let us know how you are getting on out on the trails in the UK... and if outside the UK, what are the rules where you are for riding trails? :🙂
Good on you to take a newbie out. That is how people get better is getting to challenge themselves and learn and ride with people who have been there before.
It was gorgeous Richard, so good for the mind, body and soul having days like this in winter. I am happy to give some time back to them after the help they gave me when I was learning the ropes. Gotta keep the balance right though as they tend to want weekend rides and I only have 2 weekends a month I'm not working. I need some of them for me rides! :-D
Yeah I agree with you on the front brakes. I use them in all manner of riding conditions. Sometimes it's just a light drag and other times it's full on. Great ride, perfect mix of slop and good dirt.
I'm with you on the front braking, it's good to have some light frontage pressure even if it's a tiny bit. Nice ride there, and good for matey to get out there trying it with some experienced chaps.
Def worth riding with others who know the trails when new to it all, that is what I love about the TRF, especially the London and Surrey group as they are all really friendly and welcoming :-)
Lovely stuff. I think the Himalayan with its standard tyres could tackle that. Home is where the heart is, you definitely have one there. Lovely stuff.
Awesomes. That looks like my kind of trail riding. Honestly, you guys in the UK get better weather than us at the beginning of the year. It's going to be at least May before we get any decent weather here I reckon. As the cold begins to ease, we are now entering into the rainy season ☹ This looks like it was a cracking day for being out in the country, I'm very envious ! We enjoyed this video for the sake of enjoying one of our fave RUclipsrs enjoying his Toerag, by the way 🤗 Kudos to Pezza and the unstoppable CB 250 RS !!! Thanks H-D 👍🏻 ER & Ruby
It was a cracking day for it, the weather has mostly been 'orrible since though... stupid weather! :-D Thanks for the kind words mate, muchly appreciated! :-) Hahaha... he is quite the nutter is our Pez :-D
Since I've never been trail riding either, all of those ( easy ) Lanes you take I would find challenging too. Especially the really wet ones. But it still looks like a ton of fun! Good video Hippo!!
Everything is difficult if you don't know how to do it... I love the challenge of riding the trails, that you have to think more about the surface, and how the bike will move around, so much fun. Ty Kode :-)
Wow - yeah looks like Spring, looks lovely, but for sure there's more cold to come. Looked a great intro for the guy, and he was riding well, moving the bike under him very smoothly. I can't agree with that idea either, about not using the front brake. I've found more and more that I'm on all the controls on the ready in tricky sections. Front and back brakes, apart from their obvious purpose, really can help the bike's "attitude", and even on a tricky off road downhill, I find I need the help each brake gives me at some point, either seperate or together, like you said feathering both on a downhill is the go, then you're ready and able :)
It was a glorious day, sadly the UK have gone cold and grey again... but the daffodils are sprouting, so here is hoping the warm sun and blue skies return soon. He did really well, and was ace hearing how happy he was after climbing "Toe-Breaker", the toughest trail of the day! :-) Yup, brakes do more than just stop a bike, and having a feel for them slightly gripping the front wheel on a descent can be a real help in holding the bike from running away from the rider.
You’re a good egg, Hippo. I like Nathan’s idea of a £1000 laner. I’m in agreement on the front brake thing. I’m not an experienced off roader but did a lot of DH mountain biking. Parts of it carry over to motorbikes. The front brake came into play more than you might think. Can you go around the puddles please 🫣🤣
I got a lot of help and support from the TRF members when I was first learning, so only fair to do the same for other new members now I have a bit more saddle time! :-) Yup, front brake is not just for stopping! :-) Hahaha... should I tell you, I've not washed any of my bikes since last August! :-D
Great stuff! Regarding the front brake thing, on a light bike maybe it's fine to not need to use the front going downhill. On a heavier bike, you're probably going to need that bit of front brake to help control the speed.
Cheers Phil :-) I tend to use it on my Beta as well as the Tuareg... but the Tuareg runs away from me on down hills from time to time, so def needs finesse to keep it in check.... but I kind of have to be using it from the get go, else it can lock as it is a lot more powerful than on the Beta. I wish it had a valve to turn off one of the callipers for when trail riding to soften the bite a bit, then open it up for on the tarmac.
Going downhill, you really have to use some brake to actually stop. You will just drag the rear to the bottom of the hill if you don't. It's physics. You have to be really light with it on some surfaces. But for sure there are lots of places you should be using the front brake off-road.
Hi there again, great looking ride. Do you ever put the rides on Outdoor Active? Ordnance app isnt too clever, seems ok to check where you are but not on an iphone. So OA is what I use around Kent/Sussex...
Hiya :-) I've not used it, I used to have ViewRanger, but got the OS App as I prefer the map quality... just wish the app worked better and could keep up with where I am on it. Several people have suggested Outdoor Active, so I may give it a go in the future if this app finally frustrates me enough to bin it.
Heh... there is currently 8cm of snow covering the ground here as it continues to snow lightly. :( Thankfully, it will melt soon enough. But that was a beautiful day for a ride you guys had!
Ahh mate, I feel for you having snow down. I'm hoping we'll not get any more snow, but have heard we have another cold snap coming, and it feels that way too currently.... We want more days like this one in the vid please thank you! :-D
Hi Hippo , don't think I ever suffer from arm pump , pulled a forearm muscle in the petrol station at the start of a fast run last Friday and somehow got through ok, changed my bike again to another Beta XT 300 nippy bike but was hanging on at the back glad it was in dry conditions . Am leading a run this Sunday from Bagshot so will be at my pace thank goodness !
Hi Ron :-) I used to get it quite bad when I first dabbled with dirtybikes back in 2008/9, but seldom get it now, which is why it was add for me to get it on this ride... I think maybe as I wasn't riding at my natural pace, so my body balance wasn't as fluid causing me to grip the bars harder. Ahh nice, I was supposed to be out on the Beta 390 for this ride, but I thought it had a puncture... which I have since found out, it didn't... still, it is always fun on the trails on the Aprilia, at least on the easier ones anyhows! :-D Hope your ride goes well mate :-)
It was mate, and your CB250RS is a cracking bike, you did well on it. Hahaha... I def need to sell some bikes this year... I'd get a CT though if they came over officially!

It just goes to show. Any bike is an adventure bike.

Looked like a beautiful day. Can’t wait for spring to arrive!
It really was Mark, perfect timing as it was rubbish the day before and day after!
I am so over winter, spring better hurry up and arrive! :-D

I use the front brake off roading. As long as you’re not grabbing handfuls of it then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t.
Yup, I imagine on a big bike like yours that you need to as the rear would just lock on a down hill.
