Mary Poppins is a timeless holiday favourite sure to grace our TV screens at this time of year, so posting this now seemed pretty fitting. I was asked to help transcribe this arrangement (originally by Doug Smith) for a guitarist to play some years ago, but ended up liking the arrangement so much I wanted to play it on the harp - its clarity and simplicity are sublime, and it beautifully hides how difficult this arrangement is on guitar. I'm a huge fan of acoustic guitar music anyway and this isn't the first time I've wanted to try doing some of the stuff those guys do! My very favourite section of this arrangement is the moment where the melody is voiced with almost alternating harmonics and regularly played notes - a device that features far more in acoustic guitar writing than any harp music I've encountered. I just think it's such a magical sound. I think harpists don't tend to write like this for themselves because to play a melody like this requires much jumping between one octave to play regularly and the octave below to play a harmonic, and back again, and it gets really confusing! But I really think it's worth it. See what you think.
As with my last Christmas video, I want to dedicate this to the memory of Peter Cunningham, of Pilgrim Harps here in the UK, who very sadly lost his battle with cancer recently. Peter's daughter told me a lovely story about him - by a strange coincidence, Feed the Birds is quite significant in his life. As a young man Peter met a girl who worked as an usherette for the local cinema, and wanted to ask her out. At the time, Mary Poppins was playing at the cinema, and so he went to see it five times until she'd agree to go out with him! They went on to get married and start a family, and were together until Peter passed away in 2016. Peter was a wonderful and well loved member of the harp community, and will be sorely missed.

#marypoppins #feedthebirds #acoustic
That was just supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
But the sound of it was definitely NOT atrocious.
Right it was so precocious
the umbrella hanging.... the hat and the bird feeds on the table .....
choreography of sight and sound

Not now you've told us.
Few people know this was Walt Disneys favorite song, if he was having a problem he went to one of the Sherman brothers and got them to play it for him. he would say "Thats all it takes, tupins " to change someones day for the better and I am 100% sure he would have loved this God Bless
Regal Gaming That's an amazing story thank you for sharing it. I've always liked this song too. It always stood out from the Mary Poppins scores.
This was one my grandmother’s all time favorite movies. Took me back to watching with her as a child. Thank you for this ❤
I love how you dress up as the characters and everything. Angelic playing as usual.
Such a beautiful interpretation of an underappreciated Disney tune! And the outfit is also great...
I didn't even know I could like the harp so much until this channel. I still don't understand how it sounds so good when she plays it... It's like her feelings and actions are one. She's not performing a skilled technique as much as she's doing something more.... It's like it's not a tool she's making sounds with to match notes on paperwork, but an extension of her mind and body to truly compose. This is true talent. Words cannot describe.
I didn't know the harp had natural or artificial harmonics, or however you did that. I am a string player, mostly cello and guitar but you are such an inspiration. I stumbled over you looking for ocarina covers, haha. Your rendition of the Bach piece blew me away, you put so much emotion into your craft I was in tears throughout the performance, your playing is truly beautiful. Thank you Amy
I watched that movie religiously as a child! Such a beautiful rendition! Thank you!
I love that you've set your performance stage with just the right props, and have worn the correct costume. Very well thought out .
Hi Amy,
I've spent the whole afternoon watching your videos. I love the way you can turn your hand (hands?) to anything and everything from the classics to pure pop. Amazing attention to detail. Even the percussion on Love Me Like You Do is spot on. I can't fault your timing and your feel and taste are truly exquisite. I'm a pro musician and I know pure class when I see it. I know how much work it takes to get to this level. You now have two more fans in my wife and I. I could go on and on - suffice to say thank you for sharing your incredible talent with the world. Also big shout-out to the videographer and the sound guy who I believe is your bother. Great job!!
Les
Dear Lady: while listening, suddenly I was transported back in time to the theater where my mother and I had gone to see this film (in its first release) when I was nine, and my eyes teared up, missing her. You play with such sensitivity and your arrangements are absolutely perfect. And I finally figured out which model of harp you use! L&H 30. Now I know what to look for in a pedal harp. Are you (do you) have your arrangements for sale? Again, thank you.
Amy, you are such an inspiration to me as a harpist. Your music makes me want to work harder and become better as a musician. Thank you for sharing such incredible talent!
Thank you so much for watching
I haven't watched this one before but it says I have
@@amyturkharp very good
@@amyturkharp could you play with the harp this recording being on RUclips and it is called: Mary poppins singing pink Floyd part 2 Thanks so much
Expressive. I would have expected to hear a recording like this on a major label release.
Thank you for your music. I've never been within a hundred feet of a harp. But I ordered one today. Going to try my hands at it. Your playing inspires me. The main instruments I play are keyboards, sax and flute. I'll never come close to being as good as you are but I'm sure I will enjoying exploring this amazing instrument.
You have mastered merging technique with your heart and soul. God bless you.
Larry
larry neale hope you're enjoying your harp. Thanks so much for listening.
I love it. And once again, 16 brainless haters, who want to be "original" and put a dislike. C'mon, guys, getta life. This is sheer perfection!
I can tell by the pieces you choose and how with such emotion in which you play them that you my dear have an amazingly beautiful heart.
This is one of my favorite Disney songs, played on one of my favorite instruments. Simply stunning performance.

...beautiful 😢 i missing very much...
Beautiful rendition of this lovely, sad song. It always makes me feel a wee bit tearful.
Wunderschönes Lied wunderschön gespielt. Gänsehaut pur!
Played beautifully.
I didn't know this about Peter Cunningham. I spoke with Pilgrim shortly before finding your videos on RUclips. I have an early Clarsach model (1986), which Pilgrim built for me shortly after Peter Cunningham founded the company. It's been in storage for many years and was in need of some minor repairs. I finally brought it home a couple of months ago. I began looking at different harp musicians for inspiration, which is how I found you and your deeply inspiring arrangements. This performance is poignant to me for reasons beyond yours. My harp was a gift from my mother--it marked the end of one era for her and me, both, and the beginning of another.
Absolutely outstanding.
Is there sheet music available for this? I would really love to play this song, it's one of my favorites!
Feed the public with cd's and you'll make many folk happy Amy . Beautiful playing .
The most difficult and emotional Musical instrument, and you are playing it the way that words can not express it, Thank you Amy ❤
One of my favorite songs.
Wow! Absolutely magnificent! The sensitivity, the interpretation, and the arrangement was astounding to these ears! This was beyond beautiful for me. Thank you.
I love the way this is worked on a harp by this angel.
Another beautiful piece Amy. Well done. Keep uploading your videos.
I bought the guitar of my dreams from a Robert Sherman, but it doesnt sound like this. Its a 1956 Stratocaster Thanks Rob and Amy! I feed the birds everyday!! Suet it is, and it gives them energy and keeps them warm in wintertime:) Woodpeckers love it.
So nice . Beautiful music but made even better getting to see the artist play . Great ! Love the umbrella .
Love to see and hear you play in the real Amy . Maybe a concert sometime .

I haven't watched them all yet, but I'm gonna go out on a limb early and say this is my personal fav. from a timeless movie. :O)
I love how all of your pieces are arranged!! Such careful attention to detail!
Hushaby mountain from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would sound good on harp.
My absolute favorite song from Mary Poppins! Now to find the sheet music!
One of my all time favorite songs.. you have blown my mind!
Lovely peace, masterfully excited 👍👍👍
I haven't heard this song before, but i love how it jumps between something similar to a ballroom dance and a lullaby. It sounds beautiful on the harp ❤ Keep up the great work

Your playing is wonderful, and I think your set and costume are great- as if Mary Poppins herself were playing the song.

Emmanuel
Amazing song!!! Lovely perform! :D
Awesome performance.
Feed us with your lovely music Amy .
Amazing! I bought a 36 string harp (last year) because of your and some other harp vids. Its only just started staying in tune recently so im going to start learning it properly... I just wish I had a local teacher >.
Come Play Die Honoured to inspire you to pick up the harp! Hope you found a teacher. If not there are some lessons online you can subscribe to, Shelley Fairplay has a site for tuition, and there is also Harpschool.
Also, I have a request.. I don't know if you've done one already but if possible I'm obsessed with the green hill zone from sonic and I believe you would make an absolute baddass arrangement for it on harp. Take good care and keep doing what you do!
Lovely!
Thank you for the video!
Simplemente perfecto, en verdad que tienes talento, sigue adelante😉
I hope you get lots of musical tours.
