    I'm wondering if you got updated firmware or not. I heard the build plate damage issue was either lessened or even fixed. I do wish they would put the first test point out of the print area though. Sooner or later that is going to get damaged. If you put it on the outside it will never be an issue. Where it is now it could be a minor issue if your print is big enough.

      And also importent to remember that some of the new competition is sending encrypted data back to the mother company.
      And if this company happens to be Chinese, they are REQUIRED to share user data with the state security service.
      And you have no way off telling what data is sent, because it is heavily encrypted. All we know is that the file is disproportionally large for a simple problem.

    Great review Joel! I'm waiting on the kit to arrive. I have seen a few reviews and everybody has the same issue with the nozzle poking small "holes" when it probes the bed. I don't used smooth PEI sheets anymore, I use satin and textured. I'm curious to know if the nozzle leaves anything behind when it probes on those. I'm assuming, nothing since it's coated steel.

    My build plate got a dent too. Mine is bigger. I will contact Prusa support so they can gather data.
    It looks like during calibration of the first layer, the extruder tip may decide to sink into the build plate.

    I have been printing for just 2 weeks and I am loving it. I have a long pipeline of projects to print so the MK4 is working around the clock 😅

    My MK4 initial nozzle touchdown is not showing surface damage at that location. It does have a bit of plastic there that needs to be cleaned off, but no damage. There are some resonances at times that make it slightly noisier than it should be, but those seem to be reducing over time. The print quality is slightly better than the MK3 and the speed is modestly faster. The load cell based first level accuracy is excellent and I especially like changing print sheets without having to readjust the Z height. The matte sheet is particularly nice. The MK4 is a highly optimized MK3 and we are looking forward to the coming software improvements like input shaping that will keep it the best in class while still being easy to maintain.

    My MK4 is cranking away right now. Wonderful printer. It's a very nice upgrade from the MK3S+. I thought I was going to keep my MK3S+ unmodified, but the MK4 is so much nicer that I'm seriously thinking about buying the upgrade kit so I'll have two. I had a similar-looking "defect" on my PEI sheet after bed leveling, but on very careful inspection, I realized it's just leaving the tiniest little bit of PLA residue from where the nozzle touches. The latest firmware does a nozzle cleaning step outside the print area before it does the leveling step, and that has reduced this residue. I believe if any remains, it will just be printed over and that little bit of plastic will be incorporated into the print.

    Just from my own experience I think no matter what there will always be a constant requirement to maintain tolerances in your printer. Their blog just released some more "precise" release dates for the XL: June 19th for the semi-assembled 2-head version, and an agonizing 4 weeks later for the 5-head version. It's the second time they mentioned these dates, so it doesn't seem to change anymore. However, the release of the XL was delayed so much in the past (for quality and testing purposes if I understand right), so it's a possibility it gets delayed again. I hope not.

    I canceled my MK 4 kit pre-order to buy a Bambu P1P. Needless to say, the thing was garbage, and I spent three months fighting with tech-support over numerous ongoing issues, and it wasn’t until I filed a chargeback that they finally caved in and took the defective unit back. If you ever want to get something resolved with a Chinese company, play with the money and you’ll get results. I am re-ordering a MK4 .

    On my machine I had the same "defect" on the build plate. I've seen a few other videos with similar results. But I realized, at least on mine, that it was actually just a build up of filament. I was able to use my finger nail and scratch it off and the build plate was fine. Would be interesting to use a USB microscope or similar and take some up close footage of it.

      Here is my anecdote of 1 user. I have/had ender 3, mk3s+, x1c and m5.
      first the mk3s+ is a fine printer but I easily sidelined it for the newer printer. (you can guess which)
      When I buy a product I start with what can it do and how it can benefit me. I am not buying an inferior product because I want to make a business richer. If they succeed it's because they have the better product.
      The mk4 is not much better than the mk3. The marketing of the mk4 is not the product they shipped. Showing off a single walled lightning infilled benchy is not indicative of quality. Prusa has had years of being at the top of consumer printers and rushed the mk4. We shall see if the firmware updates make it better(turn on the touch screen) Make prusa link and connect better.

    I think Jo was still pickled from the Prusa User Group meetup in Seattle. Getting to meet him, Joel and especially Mikolas at PUG was awesome! They had a 2-headed XL on display and man, was I disappointed. It was SLOW! And there's no way to enclose the top unless you have a 3.5-foot high bubble to clear the wiring and tubes. How are we supposed to print large prints without warping? I guess the big thing going for the MK4 is the board and the ability to have more advanced features compared to the MK3, but I agree with most everyone else here - it's fairly mediocre especially given all the other options currently available. You can hate on Bambu but fact is you can buy an X1 that is already enclosed for the price of the MK4 with an enclosure that you have to build yourself, and get it far more quickly than the MK4 and without any import taxes if you're in the US. So I really would not understand anyone buying a MK4, except maybe tinkerers who want to play with their printer instead of just printing on them. And while I have had my pre-order in for the 5-headed XL since day one (something like 2 years ago!) I feel like apart from the multiple tool heads, it has nothing over my Voron 2.4 which is enclosed and takes up less room. I love Prusa Research and I think they make the best filament and slicer, but the printers are falling way behind.

    • @TheFatAssCat
      @TheFatAssCat Год назад +2

      Print quality on my MK4 is much better than I've managed on my P1P. The large single extruder design is excellent.
      You're also getting a printer that would be $500-600 if it was assembled in China. But that isn't the case. Prusa is unfortunately going to suffer a similar fate to a lot of other 3D printing companies that couldn't compete in the race to the bottom.
      Aside from speed (which isn't everything given part quality and strength starts to wane) the biggest thing the Bambu printers have is the price point and better internet integration.

    • @hitf5
      @hitf5 Год назад

      @@TheFatAssCat I totally agree with the quality of the print as I do see better quality prints coming from my MK3s compared to the P1P / X1C. Speed is not everything and I do find the Bambu printers to print too fast for the hot end to keep up resulting in lower quality and worse layer adhesion. I just wish the MK4 did not feel rushed out the door in order to stay relevant. I hope Prusa sticks around because they really are the best printer company. I don't see Bambu doing things like Prusa User Group meetups, or anything that makes the community better other than just selling printers. Also Bambu's branded filament really sucks compared with Prusament. I would love to see Prusa completely move on from the I3 style and evolve. But maybe that's for another year.

    Very happy with my BambuLab X1 and the era of the Prusa printers feels a bit overdue, there's almost no innovation the past half decade. Does Prusa have anything to offer over X1? They are almost the same price and X1 has like a gazillion more features and it just works perfectly out of the box. In fact just the first evening with it I was printing absolutely flawless high resolution gears in PC with zero leveling or tuning, good luck doing that on a Prusa MK4.

    • @NorwayVFX
      @NorwayVFX Год назад +5

      I feel Prusa got a bit too comfortable with delivering almost the same printer year after year. Same as with Creality and similar companies. Prusa didn't feel any need to really innovate because their brand is so well known, and people are still buying their printers because they know they work and the customer service is obviously great.
      Then Bambu Lab came around and offered a printer with 10x the features for the same price.
      Seeing as people are generally skeptical of Chinese companies I don't see the I3 style Prusa machines disappearing just yet, but Prusa really need to step up their game now before its too late. The longer the X1 Carbon is on the market and performing like it is, the more people will switch over and not look back to Prusa.
      And the fact that there are so many years in between the Prusa model, yet they still deliver printers with the hardware in place for certain features but without the firmware and software finished, is honestly a little insulting to the customers who pay a premium price for these machines.
      I finally pulled the trigger myself on an X1 Carbon Combo a few weeks back and it's an absolute dream to use this machine. I've messed around with I3 design bedslingers for many years, starting with the Anet A8, and finally got tired of having to calibrate, fine tune and mess around with machines.
      The Prusa machines are reliable, but even the MK4 is a simple design with very few features.
      Bambu Lab are capturing several big groups of people with the only two machines they have. The X1 Carbon is great for people who use the printer as a tool, it's great for people who use it for hobbies who want to step up from Creality and Prusa machines and it's great for companies running print farms.
      The P1P is the perfect printer for people who are just starting out with printing, it's super simple to use yet it delivers amazing results.
      I feel like the Prusa MK4 barely hits any of these really.
