We are the International Organization for Migration, IOM - the UN migration agency. Our organization was founded in 1951 and presently we have 166 member states. IOM has more than 400 offices around the world.
IOM is a humanitarian organisation that works on migration issues. We respect migrants’ rights, including the right to seek asylum and the right to fair and humane treatment.
Only governments can decide who is permitted to enter and stay in a country. Therefore, IOM cannot influence asylum or immigration cases in Norway.
IOM works with authorities, but individual governments do not have the power to instruct IOM. All cooperation with governments is based upon agreements.
Our office in Oslo opened in 2002. Our main programmes are cultural orientation and voluntary assisted return. We provide cultural orientation for UN refugees coming to Norway. For asylum seekers and migrants unable to stay in Norway, we offer an assisted voluntary return and reintegration programme.
