  • Battletanx was a vehicular combat series on the Nintendo 64 by 3DO. The same studio behind Army Men and Heroes Of Might and Magic. Before War Thunder and World Of Tanks, Battletanx hit the ground running with some awesome tank combat and 4 player multiplayer carnage. But does it hold up today? Stuart K Reilly takes a look.

_"All right boys, get your vibrators in!"_
Now you've got me wondering if there was ever a third-party peripheral for the N64 was just a vibrator that connected to the slot the rumble pack went in so that it vibrated whenever the rumble pack would normally fire.

Believe it or not, Grandpa Working Man, the story about that obscure reference to a Pachinko machine and balls is utterly endearing. Your weird side tangents are half the reason I keep coming back (the other half being the games, duh).

Those battletanx ads remind me of the Old Spice ones.
One of the Terry Crews ones even had the same bait and switch, starting out with like, a fake fabric softener ad before the real ad smashes through the wall.
    "...You smell like outdoor freshness!"
    "...You smell like pow-"
    "YEAH I DO."

3do actually tried to make a console called the m2 with the power of a sega dreamcast for release in 1997 but no company were willing to buy the distribution rights to it after how low sales were of their 3do compadible machines, so I think 3do ported games like battletanx and armymen from the canceled m2 to the most powerful console that could preserve the games made for more powerful hardware the N64.

Gee! Those N64 arcade-simulating tank games looks neat but finding proper N64 emulator is always a tuff thing for any portable device. Played a few on PS1 like the same Army Men games or Panzer Front and they didnt impressed me well. Need to study more N64 library because in my country it never was enough well spreaded console and it has many grate gems as StarFox64 or Golden Eye.

Yeah, go on about music! It's worth a try, and it could be pretty interesting. Hell, you've often talked about video game soundtracks, so you've covered the topic before, even comparing it to the rock of the '80s you love. It's interesting, and it's a good way to reintroduce some kicking music. I tried listening to some stuff you recommended that I wouldn't likely have tried otherwise.
I don't mind your tangents. Good storytellers do that, and yours are fun to hear -- not that you needed my approval for it. Hey, you put up a video, and it puts a smile on my face. That's worth a lot these days.

I'm surprised that you didn't use the upgraded versions of the various weapons. Did you not know about them? Like how you can launch one of those remote controlled missiles, but it's slower and you can fire lasers from it. Or drop the bigger gun turrets. Or lay a whole damn minefield at once. Or blow your whole load or swarmer missiles in one stream as if you lost internet for 3 days, got it back and found that long lost jar of vaseline behind those beer cans under your bed.

I love Battletanx so much. Both games were always some of my favorites on 64, especially Global Assault. Amazing games, especially for the multiplayer. Also, if you want a better time emulating 64 games, because yes PJ64 is indeed dogshit, try either Mupen64 or Parallel. Both are available as Retroarch cores, which is how I recommend using them because they're weird and command line based otherwise. Parallel is more accurate at the cost of higher CPU load, Mupen is good speed and acceptable accuracy. I mostly use Mupen for Banjo Tooie, which chokes Parallel worse than it did the actual hardware.

This is probably late and answered already but fuckit.
    In the original game
You can allow your tanks turret to move in the settings, setting it to arcade. And I believe one of the shoulder buttons locks your hull from turret so you can freely rotate your turret with the thumbstick. It's a little bit tedious to get used to but it's there if you really want it.

Alright, alright. I'll subscribe. Your line delivery with your ever so southern fried with sausage gravy and pickled pigs feet accent really highlights that YTP experience you got. Well, Cartoon Coyote (If I'm wrong about you being a coyote, you can call me small tits), show me what you got.
Oh, and the games? Blockbuster core. You bet I was renting these games while all the older kids were playing Jak and Daxter and Luigi's Mansion. The PS1 and N64 (and maybe the Dreamcast if your siblings had more refined tastes) were now for youngest members of the family.

Wow, both of those ads are awesome. We really don't get video games ads like that now. So boring and safe now. Now I'm really glad I picked up both BattleTanx games loose a few years ago.
And 100% agree, Ashley in the og and best RE4 was not a bad escort mission. Her AI isn't brain dead and actually listens to your 2 commands. Can't say the same for RE4 Reimaginged 2023's Ashley.
There's clips out there of how dumb reboot Ashley can be. You can't even give the same commands you could in RE4 2005 either. Remake's, making awesome games worse.

I played and liked these games. Too bad 3DO couldn't have better ideas to coincide with it, like releasing a console that was below PS1 quality but twice the price (I know the PS1 came out after, but still, theirs diving into a market, then their is jumping in head first). And the FLP-E was awesome, you can dodge roll and circle strafe with that sucker.

They had great game ideas just didn't put resources into their development. So dum games like BattleTanxs and Army Men Air Attack work.. but bigger scope games like their Army Men World War series was stretched thin with short deadlines and poor budgets.

But the closest thing I can think of, if you haven't found it already is the "TYCO RC Air-Rebounder", which I think was a variation of the regular "TYCO Rebounder" that had 4 wheels.
