Adam was definitely not attempting to take Freddie's place, as he knows that he can't. He was paying tribute to Freddie, as was shown through the many video clips of Freddie performing throughout the concert.
The moment you see she let herself actually become her character when you see the conviction in her face when she sings "1 day i'm gonna be free". You know ella is hurting because of her "gift"
