I love how the children reassure you that it's okay when you told them you got confused during the poetry time. This age group is my favorite as they are often so open with their feelings this way. They haven't learned to be reserved as some kids do in later years.
Do you think "real" teachers design these math curriculum/texts? lol
If they do, they must have forgotten how first graders learn. Trying to get them to understand how subtraction relates to addition with number sentences in the first two months of school is a stretch! Some of these "specialists" will soon be having six and seven year olds trying to read Shakespeare!
WITHOUT A DOUBT.
I always enjoy watching your videos. When I taught first grade, I loved putting your ideas into practice with my class. Currently, I get to homeschool my 5th grade daughter. It's so nice but I do miss my firsties. Such a fun age!
SUCHHHH a fun age!
We use FastBridge too as our screener three times a year. I’m interested to hear what you think about it compared to what you have used before!
Hi Mayleen! I am also a first grade teacher and LOVE your videos and resources. Thank you so much for your videos. One question...where do you get the little pics for your BME read aloud charts that are glued on chart paper?
Enjoyed! Your turn and talk callbacks seem to work great. I want to try those out in my class.
Would love to hear what you think!
I wanna be a first grade teacher when I grow up 😊 I love your videos 🫶❤️
In our schools' math curriculum we use part part whole all the way to fifth grade. we're using it right now for the distributive property in 3rd grade....and we'll use it at the end of the year when we do fractions...
it's pretty important!
Where can we access the projected boxes with hearts and blue and red dots for practicing phonics words?
You're doing the best you can! As a former grade 1 teacher I would highly suggest allowing students to use manipulatives when learning subtraction. (E.g. build a tower of 7, take 3 away... what is left over? Then say the subtraction sentence.) Jumping to symbolic representation straight away seems a little too much for grade 1.
Oh absolutely! We do and yes totally agree. Another reason the curriculum kinda kills me - too many worksheets not enough emphasis on hands on. I my curriculum specifically wants the kids to think abstractly and do higher order thinking before they even get the chance to understand a skill - there's hardly any practice built in and very little hands on built in. I had this same problem last year so now I'm just following the order of skills and spending more time playing games and letting them practice and pulling in the higher order thinking from the curriculum as we go! I feel much better about it now than I did in this video 😕
Love your video! Where is your word mapping sheet from?
It’s from Hello Literacy and her decodables.
Thank you!!! I need this resource!! Is it part of a curriculum or can you buy it on your own?
Hello Literacy!
Awesome teaching
Are an awesome teacher. I wish my son would have had you for a teacher he wouldnt have had half the challenges he does now.
Your whiteboard is interactive. What is it ?
I wondered the same thing. I'm looking for something new, and I'd like to share whatever this technology is with our tech department!
What math curriculum do you use ?
Have you tried Tracing handbooks for writing
I have tracing worksheets haha
