what a crazy performance! His stage presence is mad powerful. And that trumpet solo! When he puts his horn to his mouth he transforms from that crazy theatrical madman into something majestic.
You can consider the time period when this was filmed; with the jungle costumes and Louis's mugging and clowning. One thing that I have observed about him, from watching many of his performances, once he put that trumpet to his lips- he was deadly serious. And absolutely breathtaking!
Louis always wanted to get his chance to be "King of the Zulus" - a designation for the annual parade of that name down in New Orleans. A couple interesting things: His lips weren't all busted up as was the case not too long afterwards and for the rest of his life. I see his guitarist was playing the Dobro - this was before electric guitars came a long. You could really see how animated Louis was. It was said Louis was a born actor. He simply commanded our attentions, like few before or since. Jazz musicians today have technical facilities that may have eclipsed most of his, but they could not entertain a crowd as he did. Alas, most jazz musicians look down their noses at such antics. I say they should rethink that position!
Maybe you remember which radio station in NYC it is, or was, that plays him for 24 hours on his birthday every year? I sorely miss my mixed tape from those days!
he's so skinny here, and he's so so high...and the preening...makes you think...but who watching him as an older performer you might never have thought he could have been so young and frisky and dynamic
Young fella...its not mumbling...it's SCATTING...a form of freestyle vocalization which as prevalent during the 20's - 40's Louis Armstrong...Ella Fitzgerald etc were masters of it...its part of your heritage black man...LEARN BOUT IT!!
