How to fight the "Night witches". From the memoirs of the pilot of the regiment "Night witches" Natasha Kravtsova. Waiting for my turn to take off, I started the engine. The front line was crossed at a high altitude. From here we laughed at the German anti-aircraft gunners and searchlights who couldn't reach us. With two minutes to go, I turned off the engine and glided down. The railway station lay in front of us. We can clearly see echelons with German tanks on the tracks. Flying low. Our plane 2 stands out clearly against the background of moonlit clouds. It makes me feel like I went out without a dress. The station is closer, the enemy can see our plane below. This is the most unpleasant moment when you know that they are going to start shooting at you. Suddenly, the floodlights turn on. The plane is immediately put in the cross beams. Not paying attention to them, the Navigator of the Nina is busy aiming. I maintain a battle course, trying not to look at the ground where the searchlight mirrors are blinding. I can't even go a little off course. Otherwise you'll miss. The first anti-aircraft gun barked. Then another. Shell bursts fall somewhere higher. Anti-aircraft gunners correct the error. Bright flashes are approaching the plane. I want to turn off, but I can't. Seconds seem like hours. Finally, the goal is below us. The plane rocked as the bombs came off. Four high-explosive bombs of fifty kilograms each fly down. Ready - shouts Navigator Nina, half-leaning out of the cockpit, looking at the ground. At times like this, I'm always afraid that she might fall out of the cockpit after the bombs. Came shouts Nina. Laying a deep roll, I throw the plane away from the beams of searchlights and anti-aircraft guns. The air smells of burning and gunpowder. Constantly maneuvering. The wind is whistling in my ears. The plane shudders from the explosion of shells. I want to curl up into a ball. I squeeze the maximum out of the engine to get out of the firing zone. We go North to the sea. The plane is descending. Ahead, the sea glows like steel. We are going down even lower. Waves fluttered under the wing. The anti-aircraft guns stopped firing. The searchlights went out. The Germans thought we had fallen into the sea. And Nina and I realized that we were out of the nightmare we were in. Look at the wing, the Navigator called to me. Turning my head, I saw two large holes in the lower wing. Pieces of paneling dangled like flags. We'll get there, " I said. The control of the plane was in order, and the plane continued to fly confidently. All fears were over and we returned home safely. Where we were expected.
I don't care what nation you speak of, whether it is men or women. Warfare is a HUMAN endeavor, and not limited to just men.

Before the war, the PO-2 was a training aircraft that was used in flying clubs to train pilots. There were many such planes in the country and many people who could fly them (including women). Here, from them and began to form shelves equipped with PO-2. The aircraft PO-2 was outdated and slow-moving, but under its characteristics came up with a fairly effective tactic for its use. This is the night bombing of the near rear of the Germans. During the flight to the enemy, one plane dropped 200 kg of deadly cargo. During the night, the planes PO-2 made several departures (up to 6 times). Bombed from a low altitude (300-500 meters). The infantry units spoke very well about the results of the work of the crews of PO-2. the Effect of them was great, because they bombed very accurately. They flew up to the target stealthily with the engine turned off, dropped their cargo, and quickly left the firing zone. There were losses, but it was not easy to shoot down PO-2. The projectiles pierced through it, and it continued to fly. The accident was caused by a projectile being fed into the engine or into the pilot. There were cases when the pilot was killed, but the plane was brought to the airfield by the Navigator. There were cases when a damaged plane landed on an emergency landing on enemy territory, after which the pilots made their way through the front line to their own. By the way, the Germans knew that women fly on the PO 2 at night. They seriously thought they were witches with special powers that made them so difficult to shoot down.
In 1941, in the city of Engels, Saratov region (USSR), the 588th women's aviation regiment of night bombers on Po-2 was formed, later bearing the unofficial name "Night witches". During the war, this regiment dropped 980 tons of bombs on the enemy.
