    I can’t believe what you can do with such a limited palette. You make it look so easy.

    Great tutorial. There is a lot to be said for a limited palette. This would be handy to try in a Plein Air kit

    I so appreciate your demos Karen and your amazing instruction. What a great video, as most of us can't afford to have hundreds of good quality pastels. Appreciate this demo, and you! Thank you so much.

    Thank you Karen, I learnt a lot from this demo. I was given a couple of these cheaper small pastel sets, but never really knew what to do with them. Now I'm rearing to go... I really appreciate this input.

      Try adding some fine sand or marble dust or pumice powder as grit to improve texture (5 parts gesso + 1 part grit + 1 part water) and coat your paper with this mix, leave it to dry completely and then paint on it.

    Hi just 'discovered' your web site and your RUclips site a few weeks ago. Some fantastic videos and some great tips, thank you. I did not appreciate how the use of white was so useful. Perhaps it was because up to now I have been using watercolour. As for what to use to blend the pastel I use (in the UK) a small kitchen cleaning block, foam on one side and a rougher side on the other. Buy in packs of 5 or larger and perhaps you could rinse them out, although i have not tried that. Thanks again, not sure which video to watch next! Norman

    So beautiful! ❤️I am looking at Sennelier Pastels and also Terry Ludwig and Unison - any advice or differences between them you can tell me? It’s hard to know which to try!🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! My personal favorite are Terry Ludwig. They are the perfect size and perfect combination of softeners and consistency. Sennelier are wonderful but they are quite soft and I find them good for top layers. Unison are also a good quality pastel but round shape whereas the luwigs are square. You can't go wrong with any of them though!

    How do you decide when to use a dry wash versus a wet wash underpinning? I live the way you describe things in everyday terms. Live hearing yoy say a part of the painting looks like a work

    love your teaching skills, what is the black block you used to rub pastel, you called it insulation foam?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! It is the foam used to insulate pipes. It comes in long strips but is easy to tear. You find it at a hardware store.

    Thank you Karen, seems to be easy to paint, but it isn’t for a beginner. :) was this a Rembrandt set, if I see it well? I have the same for me, I’m so curious if I could use it for this painting. ☺️

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад

      They are Daler Rowney pastels which are a bit softer than Rembrandts but your will work for this painitng!

    • @evabalog4839
      @evabalog4839 3 года назад

      @@KarenMargulis thank you Karen. I just expanded my Rembrandt pastel set with additional colors. I use them as “study”, affordable pastels - I live in Hungary, where the available good quality soft pastels are Sennellier and Schmicke. Later on I may invest to them, but thought for daily practicing Rembrandt with Conté hard pastels would do. What do you think? 🤔

  • @catbraunwell6450
    @catbraunwell6450 3 года назад

    This was very cool. And I only have a limited amount of pastels and I found that I have an old set of Castel poly chromos by Fabre Castel probably about 30 or 40 years old. It doesn’t say if they’re hard or soft but they appear to be quite hard. Any suggestions?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  3 года назад +1

      They should still be fine! They are on the hard side of the pastel scale but are excellent pastels.

    I'm not happy to see green sky and I've been living on this earth for moderately long period (77 years +) to see the first green sky right this moment!! It's a bright golden field in the beginning, but gradually violet colour prevailed elsewhere and the picture turn out a bit dirty.Otherwise, it could have been a great painting!!
