    Mam one have doubt tht , I have seen sometimes in past continous tense some sentence using verb 3rd form with was/were , but it is mentioned that was were always take ing with them plz clear my doubt....

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Год назад

      was + V3 is not past continuous. The continuous tense need an -ing form of the verb. It is not even a past perfect tense. That takes the verb 'had' not 'was'. the verb was + pp or V3 is the passive past tense. e.g. The rat was killed by the cat.

    Ma'am a doubt in reported speech. In sentences where we have two verbs in the past, do we change both to past perfect tense?
    For eg .
    He said, "She went off with the ladder while I was cutting this branch."
    Will it be
    He said that she had gone off with the ladder while he was cutting that branch
    Or
    He said that she had gone away with the ladder while he had been cutting that branch.
    Please explain as there is a lot of confusion in this

      The second one. The back shift takes place in both tenses. The original went off (past) becomes had gone off ( past perfect ); and was cutting (past continuous) becoes had been cutting (past perfect continuous). No confusion. The meaning of the original must not change. In this case, both have been shifted back in time.

    Hello ma’am. How do I change the statement ‘she had fever yesterday’ into a question ? ‘had she a fever yesterday ?’ -can this be written instead of ‘did she have a fever yesterday?’

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Год назад +1

      No. Had she a fever is incorrect. You have to use the did structure.

    1))If you don't sleep ,you get tired.2))If you didn't sleep ,you would get tired.what is the meaning of these two sentences?where first one is zero conditional and 2nd one is 2nd conditional.could any one explain these two sentences meaning?If you could,I shall be greatful to you🙏🙏.In this 2nd conditional sentense here , is subject not going to sleep at the present moment?

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Год назад +1

      The first one is a general truth - 0 conditional; and the second one is unreal 2nd conditional as it has not happened but is imagined. didn't sleep is past action, and future possibility - both unreal.
