VO makes really good stuff for a reasonable price
I just got this rack yesterday, and I am regretfully sending it back because of a crazy oversight in the design: VO's own Rando Bag (in collaboration with Road Runner Bags) does not fit on the rack when using the integrated decaleur! It hangs suspended above the rack with a 1.5" gap, and all the weight is on the decaleur receiver.
Just a warning if you have this bag (like I do) or were considering buying the rack & bag combo. The tombstone doesn't fit the bag well either :(
Did you fit it right? There are photos on their blog of exactly this combination.
Great to see another user of Knipex plier wrench. One of my favorite tools!
Thanks for another awesome video. I like Velo Orange. They are just down the street from me. This rack reminds me of the Rawland Demiporteur rack that you reviewed a couple of years ago. Especially with the high tombstone option. If you are thinking about keeping the VO rack on your bike for awhile, maybe something like the Nitto Lamp Holder that mounts on the rack stays and pushes the light out to the side a bit might be a good solution to your light mounting concerns. It looks like it might work just from scanning the internets. Honestly, I count on you to do all the experimentation that I could never do myself!
Solid tubular rods, Nice
Awesome review. I'm torn between the VO Flat Pack Rack and the Surly 24 Pack Rack. The Surly is a bit beefier in both weight and carrying capacity. But the VO looks so shinny!
If I was just bike packing and not using it for shopping or carrying beer, I think I'd go for the lighter rack. I can't imagine myself needing to carry more weight than the capacity of the OV with 4 struts. Big ticket price, though.
Just bought the soma lucas. The finish isnt quite what i wouldve hoped, but its really affordable so that may be part of the cost.
Have a Surly 24 Pack rack on an Ogre. This style of rack is amazingly usegul.
There was a recall on some models of Surly racks. It would be worth checking to see if yours is affected.
Thanks for another great review. I need to visit Igor at Velo Orange. They are not far from home.
Looks great on your Crust! The number one issue I have with my Origin 8 Classique Cargo rack is that its a pain to travel with since it doesn't pack down at all. This rack does a great job of solving that issue but it doesn't look like it's quite wide enough for me. Wonder if they plan on making different size platforms for these? Seems like it would be pretty easy for them to do
Hi Russ, I know this video is pretty old now, but I am wondering if you still have any insight on whether or not this rack will work with my fork that has angled mid-blade eyelets. The eyelets on my Mason Bokeh are angled towards the front of the bike, so I'm worried that the strut won't line up flush with those mounting points. Let me know what you think.
You could probably bend the struts fit through the darumas. Unless the angle is really radical.
Russ you have to take a look at RidesOfJapan to be able to understand the weight weenie thing 🤣
I have Surly 8-pack rack and love it, but I think it only works on Surly bikes.
Solid review. Well, I was thinking I'd be proud if I owned it, but the price would take away any positive chemical flow. Just not my kind of jewelry . Thanks!
Agree it is a great looking rack but not for the price. Russ do you have a recommendation for a more budget friendly version?any insight would be helpful thanks
Can you use this rack in conjunction with VO pannier racks or would it be smarter to go another way? I'm thinking of eventually building up a similar setup and putting on the panniers later. Sorry if I'm not using correct terms as I'm just starting to learn about this stuff. Thanks guys!
Do you think a traditional shape dropout-mounted rack would change a steel fork's ride because it couldn't flex as much? I just put a VO Constructeur rack on my bombora and was thinking about that afterward.
Interesting that you should mention this: I just watched the Crust Bikes video on how to install their front pannier attachment to their rack, and they mention that they minimize attachment points to maintain that steel flex in the fork.
Thanks
That fork crown rod looks like the ones they used in past racks for mounting to canti posts. I wonder why they didn’t go with some sort of threaded straight rod and avoid the offset issues you ended up facing.
Is it possible to mount it when have screwholes straight up in the forkcrown instead of straigh thru like you got? Looking for a rack fitting my Cannondale Canvas fork but only has mounts up in the crown.
Look nice and durable
Hey Russ - you really love this stuff huh?! Well guess what....
Me tooo!!!
When you weighed the VO rack did you include the extra stays and any other hardware that came in the package, or was it just the parts (and cut stays?) that you actually installed?
Just the installed parts.
I doubt you'll see this since it's two years later, but did you try really loading it up, above the recommended weight limit?
Why the hell would you do that?
Nice haircut!!
Russ, did you ever use Blackburn low rider racks?. My husband had them on his bike when we had to carry child seats.
Specialized pizza rack for the win
Pizza rack is amazing and csn fit panniers too.
Funny how that rack is more expensive than most of the bikes it's going to end up on.
idk, i bet it's gonna end up on many posh bikes
Did I miss your review of those wheels?
I'm just wondering why the stays are made of aluminum instead of stainless steel or something stronger if it's at that price point. I can see them succumbing to a lot of fatigue. Time will tell.
FWIW even TUBUS, the apex of German engineered racks uses aluminum stays.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Thanks! I didn't know that. Great review nonetheless. Cheers.
I agree for the price point. Basically as expensive as my VO porteur rack. I get the use of aluminium in the sense that the rack is designed to carry a lighter load , so it technically doesn't need that extra strength, but the price doesn't make sense. Good looking product though. I really wish my VO porteur has the 'sliding' bracket instead of the multi-hole type it comes with.
The stays are aluminum because stainless steel rods are VERY difficult to cut and manipulate (bend) unless you have some really good tools and bench vise. Then multiply that times 4 if you use all four stays. They shouldn't succumb to any fatigue, we've done a lot of testing and found them to be very solid.
which size rando bag is this? 12L ?
Rus, do you have any budget alternatives to something similar to this rack? Thanks
Crust rack was $90.
Does this rack work with cantilever?
It should.
It looks like it fits a 20" as long as I have mounting holes.
With that rod. Would fenders work?
Not when upside down. But if the rod can be setup above the hole then yes.
I wonder if the fork crown rod could be removed as a final step, for those that wouldn't otherwise have clearance for fenders. In this case, the central rod would serve as an installation aid only. Certainly might reduce overall weight capacity, but do you think with the 4 stays this could be a possible option -- would it be rigid enough to support (slightly lighter) loads?
Chris Lukes you could do it. Would add an additional strap around the tombstone and head tube to prevent accidental slippage into the front wheel.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Yeah I suppose it could be sketchy if the you don't make sure the bolts stay tight.
@Path Less Pedaled How about mounting the rod horizontally and sliding the daruma? The daruma doesn't need to be dead center of the rack. This should give fenders enough space.
what watch are you wearing in this
Seiko kinetic GMT.
no opinion on this, but im just always amused by the fact that in English there's a specific word for the vertical bit of a front bike rack where you sling a rando bag's back loop into! im a simple guy
$175 and you have to put it together? wow
First!
Feels dorky, but I've never done this before lol
Too pricey for what you get.
Show me a rack that is identical for less.
