    LYRICS:
We’re only here to protect and serve
If we suspect you’ll interfere then you’ll get what you deserve
We’re only here to protect and serve
How many necks must we crush ‘til the lesson’s learned?
We’re only here to protect and serve
It seems policing can attract a certain type of psychopath
who can’t be satisfied without asserting mindless violent acts
and when the suspected perp’s a guy that’s black, society’s fine with that?
Apparently not, that’s why they’re reciting the riot act
Riots are the language of the unheard, who can’t speak
and how can you speak one word if you can’t breathe?
And how can you breathe with policemens' knees across your throat
When politicians speak against it they just lost the vote
And what, we’re supposed to believe we’re equal, but we’re not supposed to live it?
Well most of us are close to the limit and won’t admit it
The status quo’s hoping all those soaps are soporific
but now the clips captured on our own phones are so horrific
folks won’t forget it quick, they’re prone to go ballistic
yet history leaves the deepest lesions on its most outspoken critics
There have been legions that have pledged allegiance against prejudice
from police to priests, who breach the peace, religious fundamentalists
You get the gist, it could be just the smallest portion of our law enforcement
but reason calls for us to treat them all with caution
If there’s good cops and bad cops riding side by side
Then the good cops should stop the bad cops who try to hide
We’re only here to protect and serve
If we suspect you’ll interfere then you’ll get what you deserve
We’re only here to protect and serve
How many necks must we crush ‘til the lesson’s learned?
We’re only here to protect and serve
I'm so sick of seeing people of colour being treated as other
Each of us bleeds when we’re cut, but who’s cleaning the blood up?
Human beings, do you see the missing piece of the puzzle?
Specifically, it’s difficult to speak when groups of people are muzzled
You wonder why people would turn up to the words of Malcolm X
after hundreds of years of treatment without worth, without respect?
When Kaepernick kneeled it was disrespect
but it’s standard practice to kneel on a citizen’s neck?
Seems to be a way to keep the dissidents in check
How can you play the hand you’re dealt when you’re given a different deck?
Maybe my words are ignorant, maybe I’m virtue signalling
but it’s way worse to sit indifferent to the hurt you’re witnessing
to turn away as they inflict it on an undeserving victim
They’ll commit the worst of sins while still insisting they’re a Christian
Burning bridges, burning crosses, what the fck’s this system
A godless religion at odds with its mission
    but still
We’re only here to protect and serve
If we suspect you’ll interfere then you’ll get what you deserve
We’re only here to protect and serve
How many necks must we crush ‘til the lesson’s learned?
We’re only here to protect and serve
This song is also available on Spotify: Dan Bull - "To Protect And Serve" from the forthcoming album "Straight Past Compton"

The craziest part about Kaepernick kneeling was that IT WAS FROM A WHITE NFL PLAYER THAT SERVED IN THE MILITARY!!! He explained it to Kaepernick that it angered him when he sat during the National Anthem, so he suggested to kneel like the soldiers do when showing respect to our fallen comrades. As a veteran I agreed with this sentiment. BUT BOY OH BOY ALL OF AMERICA SAW WAS A BLACK MAN DISRESPECTING THE FLAG!!! I never truly cared for the NFL or any sport after that.

It's creepy how reserved and calm the song is, while Dan's voice remains calm both through the chorus and verses. However, there's subtle differences between them. During the rapping, there's a reserved anger behind his voice, at the current system of cops, while during the chorus there's an impending sense of authority to it, to listen to what he's saying no matter how disturbing.

I've been threatened at gunpoint only once in my life. When my mother was threatening to commit suicide via sleeping pills, she eventually fainted, and I was worried she died, so I called 911 an explained what happened hoping the EMTs would show up. But no, it was the cops who showed up. As soon as one cop came out of his car, he got his gun out and yelled "where is she!?". I told him to calm down, which resulted in him pointing his gun at me, and yelling "Don't tell me what to do!" Ever since then, I've been telling everyone, do not call 911 if you think cops might come.
Cops are not your friends. Cops are thugs. They think they're above you. They value so little they'll hide outside while a gunman massacres children, because they value their lives far more than children. They'll point a gun at you, tell you that you can't panic and must do everything they say while at gunpoint, and expect you to call them a hero.
Cops in the UK, well they can be corrupt. But you don't have to worry about them outright killing you.

  • @jowzefff
    @jowzefff Год назад +10

Also, for people who get offended by the statement "all cops are bad". It is referencing the issue of "decent cops" turning the blind eye for their fellow officers who practice corrupt activities while on duty. They are also just as bad because they enable the behavior thus allowing the wheel to keep spinning.

And we *did* stop violence from breaking out among protesters, even when on May 5th 2018 NOD cossacks were beating us with whips in the middle of Tverskaya street in front of rows upon rows of *silently observing* police. That police later proceeded to "disperse" the protest by beating people with clubs. Was a first time I saw a policeman smiling while hitting somebody on a ground with a club, with my own eyes.
Rioters, unlike police, do not have *authority* and *legal protection* from persecution for the crimes that they commit "in the line of duty". They cover for each other, and the non-dangerous decent policemen either stay silent, or get fired.

An impactful song, not sure if or how it could have been included but police brutality isnt exclusive to black people, they are definitely disproportionately targeted, which is why we are often focused on talking about that, but are far from the only victims.
The problem isnt just police brutality against black people (although that is something we need to focusing on) but police brutality to everyone. No ethnicity is safe from the brutality as far as I know, it doesnt go away even if you managed to somehow resolve the racism, everyone would still be being brutalized, just not disproportionately so. Meaning both need to be addressed.
I say this partially because there are some people who use the "whataboutisms" (like pointing out its not racist because white people are brutalized too, or whatever other dumb takes) when talking about this, the problem with that is people who could be "allies" instead feel ignored (like they agree police brutality as a whole is wrong), feeling like only black lives matter (a common misunderstanding intentionally preyed on by conservatives and the like).
So possibly having a line or two addressing that would make the song even better, in my opinion anyway. Addressing the culture of brutality ingrained in the system, not just who they disproportionately target.
And you are one of the best lyricists I listen to IMO so you could probably say it far more succinctly and all that.
Definitely not trying to "All lives matter" the situation, talking about the police brutality against black people is definitely what needs to be happening, especially in light of recent events, just trying to get the message to reach as many as possible and have the full message not just the most important parts.
Idk how this comes across but call me out if needed, either I'll clarify what I meant or correct my take if I'm wrong.
Edit: Also, I could have missed or not got a line that does exactly what im talking about, so let me know if thats the case too.

With prison in the first place and how American society treats felons also being insanely fucked up and counter-productive). His criminal history (or lack of it, or whatever was in it) 100% *does not fucking matter because he was unjustifiably murdered by police.* He could have actually killed that woman and it would *still have been unjustifiable* which is why he is an 'icon' to the movement (Alongside others like Tamir Rice and Breonna Taylor, because the thing they have in common is being *unjustifiably murdered by Police because of the color of their skin.)* Because he was unjustly murdered by totalitarian scumbags and simpletons like you will bend over backwards to legitimize and downplay it because of his 'criminal history' that you weren't even right about.

You do not have to like someone personally to be outraged at their unjustified murder. You *are* in fact an enemy to the movement against police brutality.
