This was when they were an up-and-coming 4AD band. They got knocked for being derivative of Jesus and Mary Chain, but they were the best American shoegazers ever. Can't believe this is almost 20 years old! Thanks for posting!
Kundog2,Im nearly sure this is a deliberate grainy effect put on by the director or Snub TV program in the UK where it was shown. Not bad video quality, thanks for uploading!
This is up there with the best!!! Including The Smiths, Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, etc... 20 years on and this tune still makes me glow inside. Thanks for uploading it.
The 12" version of this is my most favourite song ever. Love this band. Saw them live in NYC in '89 and thought they were the future of rock n roll - straight afterwards I went over the road and saw a band Id vaguely heard of called Nirvana whom I paid little attention to......
One of my favorite bands of all time. You have to get every CD you can grab by this guy. Dreamy hazy punky pop that is real and intelligent lyrically. Smooth melodies, great guitar jamming.
Haven't heard this for ages, still love it. Back at the end of the eighties I had become totally jaded with music until a friend made me a mix-tape of a lot of the more obscure indie-ish stuff most of which I fell in love with including this one, Convenience by Bob, Man From Delmonte and the mighty long original version of Sit Down
Hahah wow me too!!!! I think it was broadcast on Tuesday nights :-). Used to go to an indie club and then stagger back to watch Transmission...was definitely a Tuesday!
peterhowardlawson: I had the pleasure of interviewing Medicine back in early 1993 for my college radio station. I don't recall Brad Laner saying he had played in UVS, but "Mercy Seat" certainly sounds like a "Shot Forth Self Living" track. :-) Medicine's "One More" will always stand out as a highlight of 1992 for me. My fave UVS song is "Poison," which comes off of Joy. I recall "Guilty Pleasure" from the same being sorta catchy as well, but can't recall how the rest of Joy holds up.
@supersteevo1000 I couldn't agree with you more. Well put. It was an amazing scene. The 80's were a time when college radio ruled. From The Replacements and Husker Du to the start of the Madchester scene. Music has never been so good.
An amazing artist on several fronts... Worth picking up his old vinyl from this period, including the EPs which had some standouts. Kurt could write some excellent hooks and did a compelling job at mixing. Three Stars on the EP was a stellar pop song (also on JOY but shorter version). Codeine was another EP standout. IMO, his last UVS release wasnt as strong as the first two.
@supersteevo1000 Well said. Spacemen 3, JAMC, Galaxie 500, For Against, Dinosaur Jr and on and on, it was the height of the Alternative when the word meant something. The bands today seem to be trying to bring this sound back, but it will never be as a significant as it was with the original bands.
...back from the days when music was fresh raw and mysterious.......nowadays people tweet where (apparantly) you can find out which toilet paper they use, if thet buy thick or medium sliced bread and if they get their glasses from Specsavers.....where's the mystery in that?...
There are people in the video that look like they're playing w/Kurt Ralske, but on the UVS self-titled debut album, he played all the instruments himself. It was only on his 2nd LP & 3rd one that he had others help out.
This remember it from Snub TV, but don't remember them making a splash with much else (in the UK, at least): any UVS fans got any suggestions for CDs (yes, quaint, I know) to track down? Kurt's haircut is pretty fab too. Was there any connection with Medicine (or only that Medicine borrowed heavily from UVS, MBV and the JaMC [and other bands with long names that go well as initials])?
@hoffnerburns yeah, in the end it all boils down to the Velvets, They planted the seeds and in particular John Cale, the true godfather of alternative sound
Is Moby in this? I thought Kurt Ralske played all the instruments on the first album, by which time Moby had already left....? I think this clip was shot in London by Snub TV.
This is up there with the best!!! Including The Smiths, Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, etc... 20 years on and this tune still makes me glow inside. Thanks for uploading it.
They ROCK. They take me back to the OLD OLD DAYS. They utterly ROCK, Beavis. I love them

Snub TV airing this and Ride performing Drive Blind/Chelsea Girl was THE reason for picking up a guitar in 89.

Kurt was accepted into Berklee at 16yrs old. All the albums are good. All the singles are good.

Gorgeous slow bassline, amazing fuzz tones...what more could you want...
Jesus. Where did that life go? The very best of the 80s and stands the test of time immemorial.
awsome song 20+ years later

And also, UVS is sickeningly underrated. Both rugged and beautiful sounding at the same time. I keep coming back to the songs.

@supersteevo1000 Cocteau Twins had been around for at least 7 years when this song appeared. Theyd shone for quite a time already!
I could just gaze at my shoes all day to this song. Pity i'm wearing thirty-inch flared cords though.
great remember
@hoffnerburns yeah, in the end it all boils down to the Velvets, They planted the seeds and in particular John Cale, the true godfather of alternative sound
wow...haven't heard this in years...still sounds good. who's this "moby?"
"Thief's Love Song" is the best song from the band
Top tune!!! Classic old indie..Not bad for a load of septics (Yanks)
Is Moby in this? I thought Kurt Ralske played all the instruments on the first album, by which time Moby had already left....? I think this clip was shot in London by Snub TV.
