Good thing your Rolex is oil proof.
Only the best mechanics work with a Rolex on.
Also, pre-filling the oil filter canister is bunk. Not needed. Its a myth. The engine is not harmed at all.
I dont taste new oil either. Lol. Its already been indentified.

There are comments from RainmanRay regarding filling the oil filter which caught me off guard: oil passes from the filter directly to the main bearings in most engines, thus any debris introduced in the clean side of the filter assembly could lead to a worse problem than the mere running of the engine letting it pump the oil through the filter and passages.

I spent about 2 years at Rolls Royce / Bentley in Crewe, UK, back in the 90's. I was part of the process that was getting the company profitable so it could be sold off to BMW and VW, but that's another story.
One of the best parts of the job was hearing the stories from the Customer Service department..
So, they get a call from a woman who's car has broken down. Apparently, it was going along as usual, then suddenly seized up and stopped.
Owner: "Well, I was driving along and the car just stopped! The engine won't do anything and I'm completely stranded"
Service: "When you say stopped, do you mean nothing happens at all?"
Owner: "Yes, it's seized up completely and wont do anything"
Service " I'm very sorry to hear that Ma'am - A team of technicians is on their way, but could I ask, when was the oil last changed?"
    Owner: " Oil change?"
Service: "Yes Ma'am, the oil in the engine - when was it last changed?"
Owner: "Well, I don't know.... it had oil in it when i bought it"
Service: "And when di you buy it?"
    Owner: "About 15 years ago."
    Service: Silence.....
Honestly, you wouldn't believe how utterly off the chart superb the care and attention to detail was in those days. Crankshafts were polished by being tumbled in broken apricot kernel shells for a week...
    Happy days!

I've maintained my vehicles myself since 1970. When people ask me "Isn't that a problem?" I tell them: *All the hard work was done to get the car built. A car is the end product of an industry of precision parts & system manufacturing enabling mass production in the shortest time possible resulting in a trouble free transportation device you take for granted. Maintaining it yourself requires only that you can read a shop manual and follow the simple logic to keep it roadworthy.*

I’ve cut open the oil filter and found that it has virtually -o- parts / contaminants / metal in it. I change the oil filter every 9,000 miles and change the oil every 3,000. Seems like a great way that saves tons of time.

Just another reason I won't own any BMW product (not counting the bad experience with their bikes). I bet that RR dealers don't actually use the drain plug at all, but do what Mercedes dealers do: they use a vacuum pump to drain every last bit of oil from above. Of course, MBs also have the oil filter in a housing on top of the engine so you never need to lift the car just for an oil change. Btw, my understanding is that Kirkland oil is made by Warren who also makes Amazon's oil and some of Canadian Tire's synthetic oils. Here in Canada Costco sells only Kirkland and Castrol Edge oils.

I am a big fan of the Japanese made, instal once and done, oil change valves that make the regular oil change plug bolts look primitive. It would certainly eliminate the mess video bob is complaining about, until he got to the filter. The valve is shaped so that a hose can be slipped on easily, which is usually superfluous, might be needed with this car.
My car is very different , and has a lot of baffles in the oil pan, so I let it drain for 15 minutes. If I had bad oil seals, I would switch to a high milage oil , which has seal conditioners for that issue, because changing the viscosity on an engine with passages designed for a specific viscosity might not oil as well with thicker stuff, plus on my LS1 engine the oil also acts as a temperature carrier in areas where coolant vaporizes as it passes, and I really am not informed well enough to take critical systems outside of OEM specifications.

Now you're just trying to make the guy feel bad when he used to be perfectly happy saving a couple of bucks and avoiding professionals who might have given him the good word about his choice of oil .
Besides, If he can buy a roller , he can also afford to screw it up, but most syn oil is probably ok, if you don't have any particular goals for the car. from the looks of the car, Cosco oil and motor honey might not meet his long term expectations. Sometimes it seems like it takes some mistakes to learn how to keep old cars on the road.
When I was a Merchant sailor, I worked with highly educated, experienced , well paid , and intelligent engineers. They all went , without exception, by the operating manuals for the systems they ran. If you loose power on a supertanker and run aground , it is a Muti billion dollars mistake, Any deviation from operating specs would have to be explained in court

Sold my Cornish for peanuts, everything was wrong with it,could not handle it anymore, wife called it the Rolls Canhardly; it rolled well downd the hill but could hardly make it up the next one; brakes were intermittent also, sometimes i needed both feet, had new sensors, computer, more sensors, injectors, pump, cats, intake gaskets, you name it, still could not pass state inspection first time,CO through the roof; a gimmick saved the day,but i was sick of it; now i went back to my V12 XJS Hess and Eisenhardt convertible, still runs like new, i just finished the oil filter housing gasket, that was the only oil leak, and a very serious one, the oil lands right on the red hot cat!! ; a monster of a job due to the exhausts, but the part is only 12 dollars;also very easy to cut it yourself.

The VW buyout of Rolls-Royce Motors did not include the Rolls-Royce marque from Vickers. The BMW lawyers noticed that and bought the rights from Vickers thus starting Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. VW manufactured Rolls-Royce cars until BMW spun up manufacturing. It was only a few years ago that RRMC could sell merchandise since all merchandise rights was licensed to the Rolls-Royce Owners Club in the USA. And that happened when RRMC forced RROC to transfer to keep sponsorship for their yearly meets.

Amen, brother... Another thing about doing your own maintenance (at least the minor things) is that it gives you a MUCH better idea of what's going on with the car. When you're under the car you can see all the minor leaks that may be too small ever to generate puddles on the garage floor. You can examine things like exhaust hangers for tightness and generally lubricate rubber items that might otherwise get neglected (yes, even by a dealership).
I'm a Mercedes guy and have been doing my own maintenance for over 30 years; I KNOW the work is done correctly, and it certainly does save some money. Haven't had a Rolls in a long time, but I worked on the two I owned back in the day (didn't have two at once, just one at a time). Of course, they were simpler back then - no hydropneumatic suspension, just dampers and springs (leafs in the back on my Cloud) - and the parts were probably harder to find because RR only sold a few hundred cars in the USA per year. Keep the faith!

I saw the viscosity index (5W-30) of the engine oil, and of a full synthetic type. I remember that a multi-grade oil (mineral) had something like 20W-50 with an 'SF' specification, and was quite ok to use in general purpose applications. I currently use a semi-synthetic type with 10W-40 viscosity (2001 Toyota Camry). If the car uses oil, (smokes a little) I would be inclined to go one step greater in viscosity, say, 10W-40, and semi-synthetic, rather than putting an additive as 'thick as molasses' with the manufacturer's original specification oil. You would then at least know the actual viscosity of the fresh oil. With additives, I would experiment with fuel additives, which might well completely solve the smoke problem...

I so wanted to buy it, rename my business Rolls Royce Painting, and use it as a paint wagon. HEY, DIME! My x-wife used to be one of their top girls at the Cluhouse in 2005-2007. (Indian/Asian, "Sita") My table was rite next to theirs! RIP Dime & Vinnie!

What about fender covers? Shouldn't you want to protect the paint?

      @RSole9999 Год назад

Not necessary. Rolls Royce paint has a special diamond top coat. Even an angle grinder won't mar it. You obviously don't own of fleet of RRs like I do....

@@RSole9999 It's not that tough but this is a $30K paintjob, with 6 layers of paint and 2 layers of clear. it doesn't scratch easily.

That car is huge and the tiny little drain plug is exactly where the bar is, german engineering I guess

I had an '07 Aston Martin DB9 Volante for about two and a half years. I rarely drove it, so the service reminder only triggered one oil change during that period. Two AM dealers quoted $575 plus tax which, no matter how much money you might have, the idea of willingly permitting anyone to rake me over the coals never sits well. I did a brief Google search and learned AM recommends Mobil 1 European Blend (sold in 5 gallon containers). The car's 5.9 litre V12 called for 15 gallons so, within 5 minutes, I ordered the oil and an OEM Aston Martin oil filter (which I'm sure wasn't necessary) and shipped them to a local independent mechanic. All in, I spent about $150.

I'd blame Rolls for the mess. It was an existing BMW oil pan, but Rolls didn't arrange things so that it would miss their bar.

Regarding the mess when taking off the drain plug, I installed a drain plug valve on my car back when I did my own changes and it worked pretty well.

No surprise. I know that an oil & filter change for a Bugatti Veyron is about $25.000.

why? can you break it down, just curious,as to how that is possible
(i know that, flat out, the Veyron will go thru a full tank in 16 minutes...)

Old engine oil should be blackened, it shows that it is doing it's work & suspending particulates which then drain out.

want to add something for you. ALWAYS shake your new gallon/bottle of oil Before putting it in. (additives settle in bottle).

    • @cmartin_ok

That's worrying. The car doesn't shake the sump before the engine fires up and the oil pump doesn't scavenge from the bottom of the sump

A trick I have used to prevent oil running down my arm (and to my armpit) is to wrap a towel around my wrist. The towel will catch any oil! Works perfectly!🙂
