I remember when I moved here to Charlotte 8yrs ago from Brownsville Brooklyn NY and friends were showing me around. They would point out the “hood” or “ghettos” and I was like this is mad dope. These hoods are fancy. They’d look at me confused. Then I finally brought them to Brooklyn to my hood and other hoods and ghettos. They were shook and scared. 😂😂😂.
I came from Hempstead NY on Long Island. My friends didn't believe me when I said I felt safe walking around the hoods of Charlotte at night than walking down a street in Hempstead. They learned quickly by what I meant.
Grew up in NJ, taught in Baltimore for 11 years then moved to Charlotte. I don't recognize a community as a "housing project" unless it has a sign on it here. Looks so different. But affordable housing in Charlotte a out of control, basically non-existent for a middle-income single person with ONE career.
I lived in California for many many many years and I'm so sad as to what's been going on with the fires and the homeless. So much suffering. I moved to Charlotte 17 years ago just before property values skyrocketed. It's insane how expensive homes are there now. It used to be affordable not too terribly long ago. The world as we know it has changed a lot. I don't think the young people would realize because they haven't lived through a lot of different changes as elders have. You all take care , stay safe
If you're not into the streets you pretty much don't have anything to worry about. You can live in the worst neighborhood in Charlotte. And if you're not involved with drugs or crime people will just leave you alone.

Its Charlotte, you go 2 to 3 blocks in any direction and it could be a rough area, but generally there is nice spots all over, and all the mill Town community like Hoskins are starting to feel the gentrification.
I use to make 3 trips a week from northern NJ to Charlotte when I use to run line haul for CT, one of my favorite jobs, never had any problems in Charlotte !
Yeah maybe one acre of land next to the highway near uptown. I have checked recently but I read the police were moving everyone out a few weeks ago. Compare that to Los Angeles.
I am from Charlotte NC. 39 years to be exact. People that aren’t even from here want to judge our city. Thomasboro isn’t a bad area nor is it ghetto. Please do not automatically classify low income areas as ghetto. There are people living in these areas you called “Ghetto” that are educated with degrees! Stop with your blind stereotyping!
Hey Nick, I used to live near Charlotte recently and I will tell you that nighttime is the most dangerous time to visit there. Uptown though is “safer” overall, but still wouldn’t recommend hanging out there that time if you can help it. Beatties Ford and South Tryon area is the “ghetto” and the dangerous part of Charlotte. Good chunk of shootings and drug related crimes took place in those areas.

It was always in the news in a bad way when I was in the University City area. Break ins were bad in all of University City. Couldn't wait to move although it looked nice when I moved there.
9:57 - Statesville Ave - technically it can be considered bad. The strip club on your right, next to the Pilot station, featured the murder of a young woman caught in the crossfire of a shootout and was featured on The First 48. However, a ride towards Uptown on that same street will run you into new houses starting around $350K+, so I don’t consider it a very “bad” neighborhood any longer.
As someone whose family moved to Charlotte over SIXTY years ago l have to say you missed some of the worst parts of town! The entire Freedom Dr. Area for one! Particularly the Camp Green area. That is within shouting distance of downtown. You mentioned " projects which can still be seen all over town. Charlotte is moving towards the San Francisco model, and has been doing so for decades, starting with the 4th Ward area of downtown. Old neighborhoods torn down by developers who put up fancy expensive neighborhoods to replace them. Old public housing torn down and leveled with nothing to replace them. The poor are being, and have been, run out of town. The homeless are growing in number every day. Like San Francisco the tech industry is growing along with the banking industry. The government of Charlotte is largly to blame for this. They have forgotten to care for those displaced by all that comes from gentrification. I suggest that you take another look at Charlotte and it's surrounding areas, say Gaston county. These are Charlotte's bad neighborhoods. Welcome to Charlotte, the San Francisco of the east coast. Just Saying.
The entire freedom drive area. Get off your high house. Nothing ghetto about freedom drive. Maybe the end of Charlotte and the start of gastonia. Even that's not ghetto just poor. Just because you see black families that live in those neighborhoods doesn't mean it's ghetto. Good fing grief. There's a rough part that is ghetto over on 16, but that's not even close to freedom.
Charlotte is nowhere near San Fran, the east coast san Fran would be disgusting NYC. We have homeless and poor in Charlotte but plenty of homeless shelters and the poor are being displaced. Atlanta has a ton more hobos than Charlotte as well, you must not get out much.

I can tell you that if this was San Diego, this area would be totally gentrified. The ONLY thing I see in these houses that would be a problem is hardly any of them have garages. Gotta have a garage!! I know the crime is still relatively high here but I also notice nobody has bars on their windows and doors. Can't be that bad. ???? What gives?
I live here, I have a garage and the roughest areas do have bars, sometimes, but yeah crime is much more targeted here. A lot of times it's gang member vs gang member.
@@sitdowndogbreath That's why carports provide shade and protection from hail. No need for a garage. Also it will be alot hotter in a garage unless you have the ac on all the time. @Nick Johnson- I’ve been to Charlotte many times but, I’ve never lived there or been in these areas. In the daytime , the neighborhood looks lower middle class “southern style”. But, at night may be when it becomes unsafe.
Charlotte has changed a lot I was born and raised here !! gentrification is causing a lot of homelessness in our city! Building new properties but not enough affordable housing! Violence is getting bad but I’ve seen worse in other cities! Murdered are on the rise all over the world! My son was killed at a protest here in Charlotte 2016. Keith Scott was killed by police. That’s What the protest was about! I started my channel to keep my sons name alive! Nice video
I moved to Charlotte homeless by way of greyhound six years ago. I lived through the homeless shelter at 1210 N. Tryon, had my own place, went through the Charlotte Rescue Mission twice, Salvation Army twice, moved to Myrtle Beach a month ago because my now wife has a home here. I drove rideshare 60+ hours a week for two years in Charlotte, this city shuts down at night, except for a couple of areas. Safest somewhat large city I know of.
Off the top of my head. Parts of South Blvd, Independence blvd and parts of Tryon as seen. As someone who was moved out of Sec 8 housing by Billy Graham told me years ago. You can take a person out the hood but you can't take the hood out the person.
As a native Charlottean I just want to thank you for calling it Downtown, not Uptown. Every city has its bad spots. The only good thing about Charlotte’s is that they don’t last long as far as blocks. Also some areas have been gentrified and it makes me say really? that people want to live in what was once a really unsafe area and pay 500k plus for a condo. I guess everything changes over time.
I grew up in Hoskins (Linwood Ave), you showed my church on Freedom Drive, why didn't you go down Rozzelles Ferry? Charlotte is close living, you can be poor as all in a house that is falling down, 5 minutes away in Oakdale they're riding horses (this was back in the 20th, before all those neighborhoods were built up). You drove past Hoskins Mills then jumped to the other neighborhood, that was my neighborhood. Bad in Charlotte tends to mean poor, not violent.
The areas that you all are talking about are, as I type, going thru gentrification. Right off Tuckaseegee Road, the "bad" side as locals call it, are new townhomes selling for $300,000. Charlotte, as many outsiders have mentioned, is a beautiful city compared to others.
Never had any TRUE ghettos? Bro... Youre going by statistics on a paper. You went to the wrong places. beatties ford rd, nations ford rd, henderson circle, sunset rd. Oakdale... And of course hidden valley .... You missed the mark completely
Madman you are super cute . I an one of the those stats working as an educator I believe in god, country and willing to give a man a second chance . I read your story about being an inmate and yes I am a proud Black Woman 37 and would like a decent man, to marry.
Traffic sucks. Charlotte wasn't so bad in the 60s and 70s. But pretty well sucks now. Midwood area in the 60s. Could actually play outside after dark with everybody without any problems. Then I lived on hickory grove road when Eastland mall opened and when it was torn down.. working at the airport fighting that traffic daily. I finally left. Hopefully I'll never have to come back. Y'all can have the orange barrel city.
Charlotte is gentrification on steroids what at one time was dangerous inner city neighborhoods are gone. Earl village Belmont and Pegram , Oaklawn Gibbs and Kenny st as dangerous as any street in America doing the Seventies, Piedmont Courts ,Brookhill Southside homes. Of all those areas Southside homes is the only survivor . All those areas have been gentrified or razed and the people was forced to the areas you see at the beginning of the video which is outside of the inner city. I was raised on what is now the most dangerous and delipidated area in Charlotte Cummings Ave they changed the name to Catherine Simmons but it has not stopped the killing. Take slow ride down it and some of the side streets guaranteed to make your heart pump a little faster.
If that’s your idea of ghetto it ain’t that bad compared to most cities this size. Not saying I would want to live in that area but don’t really feel unsafe during the day.
Beattie Ford, Sugar Creek, Tuckaseegee, Grier Heights are the most sketch parts of town. If you're looking for trouble in Charlotte, you can find it, but generally we have a "don't start nothing, won't be nothing " attitude.
As someone who lived in Charlotte from 1989 to 2006, we did have some rough areas. It has absolutely improved. I remember when west blvd was unsafe, tuckaseegee road was bad, and basically anything west of uptown was unsafe. I used to live off ideal way, near south and East blvd, and there was a crack house on the corner. Not anymore.
4:07 I drive past this corner store about a quarter of a mile to get my weed once or twice a month. I only like to go in the morning though. I went a couple times after the sun went down and that's when this area starts looking bad. Had no idea it was the worst of Charlotte LOL.

Having lived in Charlotte most of my life, I agree with the video. Charlotte is a very well-kept town and mostly safe. A visitor from a Ohio once commented to me that "It's so clean." A local radio personality always referred to it as "tidy town" with both a good and a bad implication. I can't think of a neighborhood that I would be afraid of going into during normal business hours. But there is crime... generally in certain areas... folks (usually not innocent bystanders) do get shot and sometimes killed (usually after dark)... also mostly related to some form of the drug trade. So certain areas should be avoided at night, but much safer than lots of other places inside and outside of North Carolina.
It's chronological. Used to be, you couldn't talk about the hood, without mentioning Pine Valley. Which was only a small, normal black community, until Crack came 86ish. Best thing about Charlotte was the people. Mostly good racial harmony too. Now it's REALLY international, and the southern accent is disappearing.
Charlotte's done a pretty good job of improving. North Carolina in general is one of the best states to live. I live 3 hours west of Charlotte, right outside Raleigh. Great state

He didn't drive through the worst looking spots.. he went through the worst ones for crime over time maybe.. which in charlotte can be the suburbs to be honest you never know here.. Charlotte isn't a bad looking city. Nor is it a real bad city. It has it's spots like all cities. Most people come move here and are shocked by how clean it is. Unlike other decent sized cities that have terrible looking areas Charlotte actually does a great job with keeping the city look clean regardless of where you are for the most part. But like I tell everyone.. don't let a clean street or neighborhood fool you.. think about LA. A lot of neighborhoods there never looked too bad either. Don't be surprised that a clean neighborhood in charlotte is more dangerous than a filthy neighborhood in another city.. You can't base things off of what you see in charlotte, this is just not that type of city.
I moved to Charlotte when I was ten. It was 1972. Lived mostly on the south side. I love this place. I live a blessed life. I live on SSDI , on the east side right now. Charlotte is not perfect. But it's home.
Been here 20 yrs from NY n I wouldn't have named these parts. Maybe that area near the Valley with the motels, gas stations n Bojangles. Definitely there. The hoods are almost extinct.
CLEARLYYY you're not from nor live in Charlotte because Hidden Valley is the worst neighborhood. However, the powers that be will manage to gentrify it in a few more years...Just like they did Double Oaks and NoDa. One thing for sure the worst neighorhoods are quite clean.
How was the Wedding & your Halloween hopefully you had enough candy so the Trick or treaters don't use your door for egg Target practice last night Nick. 🎃😉😀
I moved to Charlotte from Detroit twenty years ago and I can honestly say that in Detroit, you DEFINITELY know when you’re somewhere bad. In Charlotte you can be cruising around all the while never realizing if it was any place dangerous. I don’t know if that’s good or bad but I believe that folks down here in Charlotte take more pride in their homes and towns than Detroit where we destroy our city and almost seem to prefer the appearance of a complete battered war zone?
Listen, I'm someone who grew up as a functional minority in my neighborhoods as a white girl moving in and out of some of the iffiest parts of the CA Bay Area in the 90's, ok. You wanna talk about hoods and being genuinely worried about walking out of your door at times, you talk to me. Yet even there, I just learned how to carry myself, be civil with everyone and keep my nose clean and it's pretty much fine. Then my family and I moved to the Charlotte area in 2005 (not right in the city, but Gaston Co, and we'd venture into the city often) and I was shocked in the most positive way that this is actually an amazingly safe and friendly city with comparatively low crime and homeless rates to a lot of other cities of its population! Although just like every cityscape it's gonna have some old run-down poor neighborhoods and of course some unavoidable level of crime, if you're just borderline intelligent enough to keep your head on a swivel as you go about your business and treat those around you with respect instead of acting too anxious or gawking, you'll be just fine. It's not that deep, this is Dealing With Strangers 101. The fact that uppity middle class scaredy cat white people like to roll into areas with people and circumstance they don't understand and make zero attempt to, and boldly and judgmentally treat it like a zoo or a sideshow exhibit is more disgusting than anything you'll actually see there. Just go back home to your plush armchair and watch Fox News and shake your head in your own living room if you're gonna be like that, stfu and leave people alone 🙄😤 Edit: And for added clarity, I have been a full time Door Dasher alllllll over the CharMeck area from Uptown to Myers Park / Montclaire South to University to Northlake to Matthews, and usually from sundown to sunup as temperatures and traffic are low as is competition from other Dashers. So I am very at home in these streets now, and again I say I have never felt truly unsafe at any time. There have been some moments where I felt a tone shift and knew it would be wise to keep moving, keep quiet, and stay calmly alert, but that can happen anywhere. Don't cause or go looking for trouble and there won't be trouble. Simple as that. 🤷♀ Ok rant over lol
Do a LOT OF RESEARCH before committing to a place..looks are deceiving here. Ask a lot of questions like why is the rent so high? It doesn't justify the lower wages you'll earn
Welcome, I say if you know where work is located definitely try to live close ish lol! Drive through at night as well! Read all reviews and have fun! Carowinds is great if you like rides and we have some great parks
Facts. ATL metro is vastly bigger than CLT Metro. We don’t have the skyscrapers everywhere. Charlotte seems to keep them only within the I-277 at the front. If skyscrapers were built in other sub city areas like Ballentyne, South Park, Northlake etc. it would look bigger. Charlotte seem to like to build 4 and 5 story office parks vs going vertical out side critters center.

Well..... we know that funding does not go into those neighborhoods who are predominantly Black occupied sooooooooooo

???? What gives?
Southern NC doesn't get much snow so no need for a garage. Most just have carports and sheds. That's how most of the south is.
I live here, I have a garage and the roughest areas do have bars, sometimes, but yeah crime is much more targeted here. A lot of times it's gang member vs gang member.
@@PAULY-P with the heat are you kidding me you need a garage especially with electric cars coming out now

That's why carports provide shade and protection from hail. No need for a garage. Also it will be alot hotter in a garage unless you have the ac on all the time. It's only southern NC, not southern TX, GA, or FL so it doesn't get that hot. There are only Priuses and small amount of Teslas for electric. Very few people have them. It won't be a hit unless someone gets rid of our oil. That means electric Harleys too 🤣. Not many people will buy into electric vehicles unless forced by communism.

Because not one scene was from any actual Charlotte hood.
1986 is when crack came to my old hood too 💯
Charlotte's done a pretty good job of improving. North Carolina in general is one of the best states to live. I live 3 hours west of Charlotte, right outside Raleigh. Great state

Just go back home to your plush armchair and watch Fox News and shake your head in your own living room if you're gonna be like that, stfu and leave people alone 🙄😤
Edit: And for added clarity, I have been a full time Door Dasher alllllll over the CharMeck area from Uptown to Myers Park / Montclaire South to University to Northlake to Matthews, and usually from sundown to sunup as temperatures and traffic are low as is competition from other Dashers.
I'll be moving to Charlotte in the spring so this is helpful.

Do a LOT OF RESEARCH before committing to a place..looks are deceiving here. Ask a lot of questions like why is the rent so high? It doesn't justify the lower wages you'll earn
I agree looks are very deceiving
Welcome, I say if you know where work is located definitely try to live close ish lol! Drive through at night as well! Read all reviews and have fun! Carowinds is great if you like rides and we have some great parks
Charlotte is NOT rough nor a dangerous city. These aren’t the worst parts of the city they just aren’t gentrified yet.
Atlanta feels way bigger but Charlotte is actually bigger in size and population.
Lived here for 52 years, it has it's areas, most are worse at night. FYI Charlotte crime rates are 87% higher than the national average · Violent crimes in Charlotte are 95% higher than the national average
All Lies!!!!...made- born- raised! I grow up in UNC CHARLOTTE! THAT WAS A LOWER AREA, not all u say it was...👎
Hey Dee. My name is Jeff. I also live her in Charlotte. Can I take you out sometime?
Honey, you missed so much and these aren't even the worst parts of Charlotte. Check out Johnston rd, rea rd, providence road. That's the worst parts where the most happens...
Girl you know it's true
Exactlyyy...The worst happens in some of the best areas...💯
Did you say Thomas Bro? I can’t!
