Other people here have said it, but just in case you didn't understand... Ruth Underwood was the percussionist for FZ from1968 until 1976 (more or less...she really became a member in 73 but is on the Uncle Meat album from'68) She use to watch Frank perform in the Garrick Theatre in '67, then she married his keyboardist/sax player. And of all the people that knew Frank (besides his family)...she was one of the last people that was allowed to speak to Frank. If you watch the Documentery by Alex Winter, Ruth speaks very much about Frank, and then you will realize exactly WHO this woman is... you should be very excited that she decided to be a patron.

The singer is Napoleon Murphy Brock, who is also responsible for sax and flute. Frank found him while touring in Hawaii and invited him to rehearsals after the end of the tour (about half a year later). He played with Frank from mid 1973 till around spring of 1976. He has since Frank's passing been invited to play with various tribute bands, the first of which Dweezil's Zappa Plays Zappa.

This, for me, is arguably the highlight of Frank's entire career. It's got everything. The best musicians, some of the most complex jazz-rock ever written and a lot of humor.
Prog rock heaven! The only problem is that Bruce Fowler's otherworldly trombone solo has been edited out in this video. Can't imagine why...

@magiclittle fingers2020 I disagree. Frank was never about commercial appeal. He had a couple of accidental hit singles on the radio, but the profits from those (and his tours) went straight into composing and recording decidedly uncommercial music.
I'm sure he would've liked to be commercial in some ways, but only if the general audience's taste happened to coincide with what he was doing. He would never deliberately try to write a song he felt would maximize his popular appeal.
The 1988 band was great. No doubt about that. But it didn't have the camaraderie and sense of humor that the Roxy band did. They were a true unit. The 1988 band was a group of hired pros.

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt 3 года назад +1

@magiclittle fingers2020 Bobby Brown was a hit in Norway.
And what's your obsession with popularity? Is that what matters to you?
Personally, all I care about is the quality of the music, and that's in large part dependent on the musicians involved and their interplay.
Bozzio brought a lot of energy with his playing, and Frank's guitar playing was never better than in the late 70's.
      But Bozzio's voice was horrible.
You can even hear him tell Frank that he can't sing on one of the albums, and then Frank has him sing the whiniest song imaginable to prove how awful he is.

Really good point from Sifa towards the end. In the early 1970s, people didn't have so much TV and other distractions like video games and social media, and spent more time reading, thinking, getting out and playing, and actually doing things and learning real skills. That meant they could develop their musical technique and art to this level, rather than having machines and AI doing it (or spending too much time wilfing on social media, playing computer games and not doing anything else). That's something to think about, especially for today's younger generation.

Another suspicious name - That's the fourth one in a couple of days. Maybe you should Google the names of these people requesting songs. Julliard trained Ruth Underwood was Frank's marimba player/percussionist for years. He wrote the song "Ruth Is Sleeping" about the fact that she would learn her parts so quickly that she would doze off as Frank went over everybody else's parts with them. Is This Spotify ? "Echidna's Arf" is really only around 4 min. and flows into the next longer song, " Don't You Ever Wash That Thing" They added that without mentioning the name. Ruth Underwood played a huge part in this lineup of his band, and especially this music ( you might think she is playing a xylophone, but it's her marimba that Frank had pickups installed into).

A song about the Turkey farmers in Palmdale? Why not? I just saw The Zappa Band play this medley at the Greek Theater. Its was mind blowing to say the least!

Palmdale is my hometown. Frank went to High School in Lancaster (Antelope Valley High Scool), which is kind of a sister town right next to Palmdale. Sun Village is a small hamlet east of Palmdale, populated by many African Americans (and turkey farms) in the late 50's. And yes, Palmdale is INFAMOUS for the wind.

I think sometimes if you close your eyes, you can picture this music in one of the old timey cartoons. Not by any means meant as a slight. Those guys who wrote and played that music were probably the best available

Holy xylophone, Ruth Underwood as a patron! What the marimba? Love that trio of tunes but Echidnas arf (of you) stands alone as a piece of musical perfection in my opinion. Like a battle for supremacy among instruments

Gawd, Zappa history. On this album are three of four Fowler brothers, on trombone, bass and trumpet. Later all four brothers formed a band called "Air Pocket".
I lived in a town of about 15,000 that had a couple of great music venues. In the middle between Frisco and Portland touring bands would book a show in Ashland, Oregon. Not huge bands, but some real names nonetheless.
So, in an early iteration of the band "Air Pocket" they stopped at our local gig and did a show. Small night club, great venue.
But, while he was not a member of the band later they had a mind-blower of a vocalist. Ike Willis. He was Zappa's vocalist for a good stretch of time. Including "You Are What You Is", which y'all have just dived into.
That stands as not the best concert ever by any means, but one of the most memorable, once in a lifetime concert experiences.
Yeah...this band was insanely talented, and Zappa was a task-master for sure!
    Blessings.

Hi there! This is actually THE version of Village of the Sun. There are other versions out there, but all live. Your patron Ruth can tell you how this music developed, and was not necessarily written down.

  • @Baribrotzer

This is FZ's version of jazzy soul music, and he knocks it out of the park. The "Village of the Sun" is a real place, a black neighborhood in the area of Lancaster, California where Frank grew up. The people he mentions were friends of his: In fact, he was in a band with Johnny Franklin called The Blackouts, unusual and controversial in that it contained black, white, and Mexican members. Frank was rather disliked in high school, and that was one of the reasons - he was quite a bit less racist than most white guys at that time and place.

This is his top notch song(s) - and album, imo. It actually should have been Echidna's Arf/Don't You Ever Wash That Thing, since it is 1 long song, but I'm sure someone must have pointed it out already. Great album. one of his best.

There's a live version that sounds almost exactly like this but he tells a story at the beginning about how he used to live there. Ruth Underwood is the xylophone player and there's a part live where he's talking about how slippery the floor is where's she's dashing back and forth to her instruments.

I'm not yet a customer, but may I suggest a kick ass instrumental titled, "Son of Mr. Green Genes" off the "Hot Rats" album. "Mr. Green Genes" can be found on, "Uncle Meat". Nice job!

it wasn't over... it had about 5 more minutes... including a part where he says "ladies and gentleman...watch Ruth." The Ruth that he is reffering to... is the Ruth that requested this song from you guys.... Now...here's some more info for you...first of all...there are two drummers here PLUS Ruth on percussion... secondly... Napoleon Murphy Brock is singing...there is no studio version of Village of the Sun... this is the only version from the albums that were released before Frank died... There is a video of this concert. It's called "ROXY The Movie". There are actually THREE songs here... Village of the Sun ends when the instrumental part begins...but Napolean ad-libs a little in the first 8 bars with "yeah yeah yeah Vill-AGGGGE". At that point the song Echindna's Arf (of you) continues until it gets to the part that sounds like a bugs bunny cartoon. The section with pauses...bap bap.....ba da da bap.... bap ba da badyba ba. LOL... that is a song called "Don't you ever wash that thang?"...which, unfortunately...cut short by 5 minutes on your video. Hope I answered all your questions.
Good job on listening to Zappa with an open mind... you're gonna need it every now and then.

Hi you 2, it's hard work hearing Zappa. Zappa once said "Everything, at any time, in any order". That was his musical concept. Absolute freedom ... Greetings from Germany!
