The thing is...I think part of the mistake was expanding the story to 90 minutes. Actually, and this might be controversial (although I think Alan Moore would agree with me on this), I think the mistake was thinking The Killing Joke should be adapted. Hell, to get even more controversial (and still I think Alan Moore might agree), The Killing Joke isn't that good in the first place. Don't get me wrong, it's well executed. The craft is on point. The specific way the art is used to tell the story, and the poetry of the dialogue, it's all very impressive and evocative, but the story ultimately doesn't have a whole lot to say. As well told as it is, I don't know that it's a story that ever needed to be told, and I think I've heard Alan Moore express roughly the same sentiment. And it's obviously an effective use of the Joker, but it's not a good use of Barbara.
If this movie were 60 minutes, it would be a masterpiece. Cut off the first 30 mins and give the movie the original graphic novel art style and it would be a 10/10
So much better visually. If one person can do this on no budget, surely WB animation could've. :-( I'd crowdfund the heck out of a full remake like this. Copyright be darned.
Doesn't matter. It's a licensed character under the purview of a major corporation. Any attempt to directly remake an already-copyrighted work would be shut down almost instantly.
Excellent work. That looked orders of magnitude better than the actual trailer. Aside from the art style itself being better and closer to the original comic, you actually have fluid animation. Hell, just look at that cringe inducing animation in the real trailer when Batman is walking into the prison at the beginning, and it looks like two frames per second. Yours is actual animation where you can actually appreciate the style, because you're not so jarringly distracted by the low frame rates. I'm hoping the movie is good, and I have faith it will be, because it's Bruce Timm doing it, but from what I've seen so far, this will be the worst looking animated home video release Warners has put out since they started doing this.
I just watched it about five minutes ago, and the animation in the actual scene looks WAY better than what's in the trailer. Very fluid instead of choppy, so I'm guessing that those choppy scenes in the trailer were just early passes on the animation, which I get why they used for the earlier trailer, but why did that leave it in for this most recent one if they have a better version? Regardless, I'm just happy the animation isn't going to look as bad as the trailers made it seem.
I think they wanted a dramatic Slow Motion effect f Batman walking down the hallway in the trailer, or they tried to fit a too short shot in there. So they slowed it down and therefore it's more choppy than other clips. It's pretty much run on threes (every frame of animation is 3 frames) I drew some inbetweens to get it back to being on twos (every frame of animation is 2 frames). Trying to smooth out the Slow Motion effects. Along with some other changes along the way. Thanks for appreciating it!
Exactly. They slowed it down for that effect - or maybe because they tried to expand the time Batman was alone in the hall before Gordon comes running. I draw some inbetween-frames to try to get the slowmotion more smooth.
Thank you.Yes, i had to draw and insert new frames into most of the shots. I don't really now why, but for many shots in the original each image linger for 3 frames (which result in 8 FPS)
+Plan Making Mammals hey you think you can make a recreation of the entire movie like this a lot of people in the comment section including me are saying they would be will to put down give some
haha. Don't think that would be possible (tinmewise and having to work) and would be hard when it comes to copyrights and such. It should also be of a higher quality than these trailers. Don't seee how that would work with payments either even if i would have the time.
I know it'd be a metric fuck ton of work (this trailer probably already was), but a full edit like this of the movie, once released, would be a dream come true for me. This is beautiful. I loved the artwork and coloration in the original comic. The official movie looks great, but it doesn't capture the whimsy or drama that the vibrant colors added.
Well, the actual movie is going to be pretty disappointing after seeing this. That was incredible. Dear Warner Bros. Please give this guy a suitcase full of money and have him do the whole movie like this.
Because movies have budgets and deadlines that constrain the amount of time and labor that can be invested per frame. Increased complexity increases the amount of training needed to keep staff on-model and increases the amount of time required to produce the film. Because this movie is part of a franchise property. It is incumbent upon producers to keep this title consistent in feel and look to the established product line to maintain wide marketability. It also allows production to use existing assets instead of re-training whole swaths of staff to burn money and time copying something unique with little return. Because comic books are not the same as storyboards. Every comic frame contains all the information while film has to generate anticipation through timing. This narrative rule demands different treatment of staging, layering, color, lighting, form, depth &c. Even the narrative may have to change to preserve clarity in viewing. Copying a story from one medium to another without artistic license is a sure recipe for a confusing and mediocre product. A movie is more than just about looks.
I saw this film. It's not just a "different colour [palette]". This guy added more lines, cels, and gradients than these guys probably had a budget for. You also forget there's a bunch of stuff in this film that isn't from the comic book, where there isn't stuff to just copy with a clone brush.
Yeah. I made some changes, both regarding characters, colors and backgrounds. But I doubt what I did (the look, not the quality) would have cost them more. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. It's not really more complex. I would say it's the opposite in some areas. The choices they made, were not made for budget reasons (I would think).
This is awesome. It Matches the color pallat of the 88 novel perfectly. The real version is influenced by the re-colored version of the book that came out in 2008. I've always preferred the original though and it would have worked perfectly in animated format.
OMG, I don't think I speak only for myself when I say I want a Killing Joke movie EXACTLY as you animated it, and with no filler, just the story told in this animation.
YES YES YES YES YES!!!! Why wasn't this the direction they took?!! We've all had our fill of BTAS (which was amazing), but this really should have been EXACTLY like this! The art style for TKJ was what sold it for me! I bought the comic as a kid the day it came out and have loved it ever since! Bravo dude, bravo.
This is what we deserve. I wasn't so immerse in the movie when I saw the original trailer, but after this, ...this looks the way it should be. Amazing, I hope you're able to do the whole movie like this.
WB said they couldn't recreate the comic visually due to it's art style so that's why we got what we got. But this was actually pretty good. Thanks for the video.
this looks so much better, i love it so much (can't wait for the actual film, but I think that this is not only animated better, but I prefer this art style and coloration so much more. Great job staying true to the comic!)
DC can't pull this off because they're too comfortable with Phil Bourassa's Young Justice art style. It's one of the reasons why a Kingdom Come movie won't happen anytime soon. Even when a group of 80s freelancers pulled off the killing Joke art style better than DC's animation department /watch?v=pi5qoxxQpMY
First of Frank Miller is a crazy, fascist prick, but is not a hack. Also Alan Moore really does not care for The killing joke. It is Brian Bolland who would be proud if not for the fact he was never a fan of the original colouring.
dear wb. I would 100% pay for 2 copies of this movie if the other is this guys version! damn dude I wish you luck and hope you get big money because I want to watch your version. it's why I like the original more then the rerelease of it in hardcover. it's odd why they changed it, the colors I thought were very important. gave that insane joker feel to it. thanks for the smiles. Just need to replace my screen now for trying to shove money into it.
the fade to orange scene with Barbara really captures the dreaded feeling of the inevitable. love it to bits. Here's hoping the movie lives up to the hype :D
Yes!, Finally! a proper version of what it should be. Thank you!. I've had problems with it from day one, and it's been an absolute turn off for me. I've been telling people that it can be done had the animators and creators took a bit more TLC with the material. This trailer proves it!. It defiantly pops out more with the colors and adds to the mood. Thanks for adding in some fine details of The Joker, such as the lines on his face and the sharp teeth. I know that with more time you would get the toss of hair spot on too. Congratulations on a job well done!
this really looks as perfect as it can get. side story time, I was one of the few who got to see killing joke in theaters for its limited run and i distinctly recall every one laughing/groaning during the batgirl scenes, and even leaving right in the middle of it.
This drawing style is perfect for the stories about Batman. The best transfer of the atmosphere and the characters. This visual style of the origins and the connection with "Batman: The Animated Series" (Bruce Walter Timm). I am glad that I can appreciate this work. Every detail is where it should be. Thanks, I enjoyed it! Another view just pathetic imitation and does not convey the essence.
this is so perfect, I wish this is what the actual film was going to look like! Blows away the WB version by far. Someone should set up a go fund me to pay this guy to redraw the entire novel because wow
DC should hire you ASAP and get you working on redrawing the entire thing. I just watched the side by side comparison and WBs animation pales in comparison to what you did with the artwork. it's truly a tribute to this amazing graphic novel, which in itself is a work of art with its own style. Keep up the amazing work because you my friend have an amazing gift
the original color pallet is as Bolland wanted it. This pulls from the original printing with colors that Bolland didn't like. He recolored it himself in 2008.
Yes. Bit I thought it was cooler to go "all in" and do it as it was originally released. (And George Lucas wanted Hayden Christensen at the end of Return of the Jedi)
I think the difference was that Bolland asked for a specific coloring style, like all of the flash backs being in black and white, and what he got back from Higgins wasn't at all what he asked for but because of the deadline he couldn't fix it.
In an alternate universe, The Killing Joke animated film has this artstyle, and is a 90 minute masterpiece.
I don't care what color it's in, Batman having sex with Barbara isn't okay.
@@PurpleColonel in an alternate universe, that part never happened.

^AMEN lol

start a kickstarter and do the whole movie when it comes out!!
I'll happily donate. I'm skipping the movie until this version is complete
They'd get shut down immediately.
Intellectual property/copyright laws would forbid them from doing so.
If all the money went into the project and they distributed it for free wouldn't it fall under fair use like fan films do?
Doesn't matter. It's a licensed character under the purview of a major corporation. Any attempt to directly remake an already-copyrighted work would be shut down almost instantly.
This proves that no one does it better than the fans. Great job!
This looks so much better! The film looks so styleless, and uninspired. This really makes it come alive
This is fantastic ! I always preferred Higgins' psychedelic color scheme, as it gives you to impression to be seeing the world like the Joker sees it.
this looks better than the movie trailer
please do this for the movie when it comes out, I would gladly put money towards a kick starter for this
i'll also help pay for this
same i'd be down to throw some cash
im in on that too
You've got my support :D
