When The Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry Peaked

  • The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry goes back to 1919 when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees for $100,000. For the rest of the century, the Yankees were the best franchise in baseball while the Red Sox were a team of misfortunes plagued by the curse of the bambino. From the 1946 World Series to 1967 to Bucky Dent to Bill Buckner to the 1999 ALCS, the Yankees always found a way and the Red Sox didn't. But things changed after 2003 when Aaron Boone sent the Yankees to the World Series with a walk-off home run. The Red Sox would come back from a 3-0 deficit over the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS and would go on to win the World Series to break their curse. With the fights, hatred, and level of play, 2003-2004 was the absolute peak of the rivalry.

I was a big Red Sox fan since 1995. That was the year Mo Vaughn won the MVP and the Sox lost against the Indians in 3 games in the ALDS. But from then, I was hooked. This is the best rivalry in baseball, if not all of sports. Those two years in 2003-2004 were peak as you said. I totally agree that Aaron Boone probably wouldn't be the Yankees manager if not for that HR in 2003.

I've been a Red Sox fan since I was 5. In 1994 I moved to the Seattle area and in 1995 the Mariners had a magical season that I got completely engulfed in. When Boston came to town I was so excited to see the Sox play. I stood outside the Kingdome to get MO's autograph. When they came out to get in their bus they were in a single file line and I saw Mo. I had my Red Sox baseball and asked him to sign my ball. He shook his head no and I was bumbed out bad. Down the line I saw Jose' Conseco and he gladly signed my ball. I thought that was cool, but I wanted Mo Vaughn's. It was bittersweet but I still have that Conseco ball!

As someone who was born in a Yankee household and loves the team, the late 90's and early 2000's is definitely peak modern Yankees/A's rivalry. It hasn't felt the same since I was a kid. I was 8 in 2004, so there was definitely sadness in our house the night the Red Sox won the World Series. I agree with the other commenters that it just feels like tradition now for the teams to face off against each other these days. Hopefully the Yankees can actually win a World Series sometime soon, since it'll have been 15 years since their last win this year. They haven't won since their first year in the new ballpark in 2009.

The drama in the events speak for themselves... just give them a chance to do so is all I'm saying. Otherwise great vid! As a young Gen-X, this was a great nostalgia trip! 😀

They're not cursed any longer. It's what happens when you have confidence, ownership and general manager and especially a manager who knows what he's doing. Bruce bocce is probably the best signing they ever have done. I'm absolutely shocked because prior to last season I would have agreed with you but not anymore
