Breakdowns, Dirt Grading, & High Tunnel Set-Up | Is Gardening in Alaska Worth It?

  • After clearing the area for our high tunnels, we immediately got to work on getting the ground level and smooth. We started off with a hydraulic cylinder leak, and then we were back out there working with the skid steer. Once the area was graded, we set up the high tunnels. Luckily, we have had several days of gorgeous weather to get our plants sometime to adapt to being in the ground outside...in the high tunnel, of course!

Wow I am impressed with you both. The fact that you do a cost analysis is impressive, I watch many channels like yours and have never seen anyone do that. I have always wondered if all that work that is put into gardens was really worth it. Thank you for a great channel. I really enjoy watching you both. All the best to you.

I like watching videos where people interact with their dogs. That’s probably the funnest thing he’ll ever get to do. I’ve never tried to take my dog a ride in my skid loader, but she does ride on the zero turn lawnmower. 😅

I watch a variety of channels where people are homesteading. The element that I often see missing is the planning and analysis process that the two of you follow. You are very intentional about it and very reflective after you do a project. While running around with no clue provides a lot of drama and therefore content, you get the feeling that success is not going to be the end product! Having the right tools and the skills to utilize them and the understanding of basic agriculture is a huge plus.
Being from Pittsburgh originally, hearing the local accent is a bit of nostalgia for me. Much success to you both and I hope Vanilli enjoys skid steer rides for many years to come!

You need to watch SIMPLE LIVING ALASKA, which is an amazing couple living in Alaska who did the same thing but they also harvest salmon, moose, caribou, berries and canning everything and have an amazing huge garden. I highly recommend them for you to watch. sSIMPLE LIVING ALASKA. You won’t regret it.

I posted a request for a project management type video in their last video. I meant to offer ideas on what to include, but it was fairly comprehensive from a project management perspective. I hope I didn't scare them off the idea, particularly if they're just winging it... which I would also like to hear about.

that little Case is really something in the hands of someone who knows how to use it😏 one thing to keep in mind is cost vs quality of the produce you grow. I live in the desert and grow in containers and have to buy the soil, amendments. manure and a host of organic fertilizers and I know I don't break even, but I know what I am eating. Don't let cost slow your garden down.

You have to allow for the learning curve in your gardening. You have already learned things that can improve your production and have implemented those. As you talk to more locals and do more research you will get more ideas to try. Think about how much you have learned already compared to what you knew when you started!! I can't get enough of the views there, so pretty!

I have noticed the improvement on the videography you have developed over the past months. Starting a vid with nature reminds me where you live and the beauty you have found which is a simple justification of WHY you went on this life changing adventure in the first place. In spite of all of the work, you have found a place of your own to live on your own terms. Seeing two people working together so well, sharing in the burdens and joys, and each knowing your strengths is a delight. Your example is encouraging to everyone to find a compatible life mate and work together to build a future together. Also regarding video layout, the ending walkthrough of the high tunnels would be a really great sampling shot if you did the same walk through every two weeks or so to show the progress and growth within blending them together to make a temporal montage. For example starting at one end today then ending at the end of the last tunnel after the first season in one long shot.
Wish I could help you make your dream easier. But I am stuck in CA. You are both my heroes!

I'm sure you googled it, but it is fine for dogs. A garden is always a good idea and a learning curve every year. Fresh anything is better than the tasteless, over sprayed stuff in stores. I hope your gardens do excellent and you find lots of yummy berries on your land. Just close up the greenhouses while they are warm and maybe put frost clothes over tomatoes and peppers until temps are constantly above 50. I found 100 x 10 ft frost cloth on Amazon for cheap and it works great. We are just getting over the nights being in 40's (peninsula of WI) Haven't hit much above 70 yet, this week calls for upper 70's and humid. Hopefully it will jump start everything in my garden that I just couldn't plant to June. Wishing you the best! Love the way the goats provided you with barkless twigs :)

Good morning guys . The hubby did a great job on rebuilding the chase piston. And great job he did on level off and scrape in the area for the green houses. And that was a great idea of saving all the topsoil and when it break down. You going to have such a rich soil to use for planting all your vegetables and fruits now. The growth should be phenomenal. And we live in Jersey so we're on the pine barren so I know what you're talking about with the difference in the soils but I also do aquaponics

Chris, nice job on replacing the seals on that piston. When I was landscaping after high school we had a Case 1845C just like yours except it was brand new then! I wonder if the older machines are easier to work on than the newer ones? The older ones probably have less things in the way. I've been meaning to ask what you did to your left hand? Those are some serious rows in your high tunnels. They should do you well. What is your background work wise? I'm kind of the jack of all trades, master of none myself and you appear the same. Really nice setup on the greenhouses. Good video 👏🏻

Looking better each time. Keep up the great work. I don't live in Alaska, but I do live in the country. In order for me to go shopping it is a 28.8 mile round trip to the Super WallysMart closest to me. My truck gets 14mpg, so it takes right at 2 gallons of fuel each time, plus wear n tear, etc. If we went by the IRS mileage rate - which is a cost of 67cent per mile in 2024 28.8x52 (once per week) 1,497.6 miles x.67= $1,003.39 cost for me to go to the store each year. My point is, it's not just the costs of the product, it's all things, such as that mileage, but also time. I can go to the garden, or drive and spend 40 minutes on the road, plus the hour inside that store, etc. I think your break-even point is closer then you are calculating.

I got a good chuckle watching the skid steer turn your compost as I looked out at my 4’x4’ urban compost pile that I turn with a shovel. 😀 Whatever the size pile, composting is a beautiful thing! And just a thought to your cost analysis- when comparing organically (home) grown food vs. buying commercial: the mineral and vitamin density in organic food can be up to 6 times that of commercial, depending on the food, not to mention the taste. I have bought and grown organic from the 1990’s to present day. Although it has always been more costly, the kids got the equivalent of eating 4 commercial springs of broccoli, by eating only one. They learned vegetables have flavor and you don’t need cheese slathered over them to make them palatable. I think there are analysis charts available to compare organic vs. inorganically grown food so when you do your cost analysis maybe that can be included for looking at the veggies you are growing? Enjoy your channel thank you for the content and I look forward to your next video!

Wow that's nice Greenhouse houses you're going to grow some great stuff in it by the way if you were doing cucumbers I see you have a way of the Cucumbers of to climb up they love doing that I recommend Boston's because they make the best pickles and if you grow them to about 6 in to 8 in depending on how big your jars are can you usually get between 4 :00 to 5 pickles a jar but the big thing is cucumbers need as much light as possible strong light they don't like gloomy days they like lots of direct sunlight and that's really important for them. By the way I have a really good pickle recipe if you have a hydrometer if that's to read how much salt in your solution for your pickling you want to get 22% salt and what I normally do is I cut a slit into my pickles not fully through but enough so about 80 so they get fully cured quicker and I put them in my refrigerator I have a special refrigerator for pickling and I put it on the almost the highest temp about 42° and it takes about 4 weeks to get a half sour pickle what I recommend is pickling spice about a quarter of an inch in the bottom of your to clean jar and then five to six clothes of garlic and fresh dill about four to five things Snippets of DILL and that's it

Where did you get those high tunnels? The frame assembly looks pretty fast and easy (when they include all the parts, that is). Those replacement anchors you used look great as well. Do the doors stay shut with velcro?
