    Bravo. I used it when I was a pyrotechnician and setting up fireworks shows on barges. They only flag I know. Unfortunately, most people had no clue. More than once did I have a boater quietly glide up behind me to then say "Are doze da fy-ya-werkz!?!?" Which to their astonishment came a barage of belittling and cursing of not knowing boating rules, etc.

    Flags are all fine and dandy at the yacht club but in the commercial world, almost exclusively, its day shapes, lights, audible horn and bell signals to communicate intentions or conditions. The one notable exception is the Bravo flag for transporting or transferring dangerous cargo.

    • @toddhercules1885
      @toddhercules1885 4 года назад

      No not really. What we learned was you're a dick.
      In the system of international maritime signal flags, part of the International Code of Signals, the Z flag stands for the letter Z ("Zulu" in the NATO Alphabet) when used in letter-by-letter alphabetic communication. When used alone, it means "I require a tug" or, when used by fishing vessels near fishing grounds, "I am shooting nets".
      The Z flag when combined with four number flags (The leading two denoting hours, the trailing two denoting minutes) indicates Z Time (also called Zulu Time), a military and maritime term for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) (formerly called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)). Thus this would mean 0800Z ("zero eight hundred zulu") equivalent to 08:00 UTC:[1]
      You require a F*ing tug?! You sir are a dick. What flag do you have for that? A giant dick flag would be awesome for you.

  • @abptlm123

    You didn't talk about "Day Shapes". -- Day shapes are mast head signals visually indicating the status of a vessel to other vessels on navigable waters during daylight hours whether making-way, anchored, or aground. These signals consist of a set of simple geometric shapes-ball, cylinder, cone, and diamond-that are displayed, hung from a mast, in a prescribed manner to indicate a vessel's operational status. Do you see these on Super-yachts?

    • @erikb8877
      @erikb8877 4 года назад

      In US territorial waters, there is no law prohibiting the Jolly Rogers. That being said, there are other flag protocols to consider such as; in order to hoist any flag, the country of your home port flag must be hoisted higher first. Flying the Jolly Rogers could be pretence to board and inspect your vessel by any law enforcement or border authorities or even the Navy in international waters.
      Out of respect for the host country before in foreign waters/ports, check local laws on flag regulations.
      The last thing to consider before hoisting the Jolly Rogers is the fact that any true Mariners are laughing at you on the inside. If you still want to display the Jolly Rogers, fly it from the port yard arm since that is the lowest point of honor.

    Not trying to sound dumb. It seems like it would be a major pain in the butt to switch flags all the time. IRL are they used consistantly? The radio on Ch 16 seems faster. Who wants to run a flag up when you are turning port or starboard? I can see B, G, Q and a few others that just stay up. Which flags get the most flying time on the yacht?

      Some are used more than others in shipping today. I don't think I've every seen flags used for direction information, for example... Much more common are the ones that are more long term, like divers in the water, having a pilot onboard, etc. Flags like "I require a pilot" aren't used (much?) anymore. You will use the radio or a phone for that.

    Tristan, I've got a question for you I've always wanted to know. What is the difference between a Superyacht, MegaYacht, and a Gigayacht? Is it a length difference between the three or Gross tonnage?
