- We’ve covered many of the varied and interesting complications watchmaking has to offer, from the humble self-changing date to the mighty perpetual calendar, but despite the vast iterations of features we have seen, there are always a few more that we haven’t-and some of them are quite unusual. Here are three of them-the question is, are they useless or not?

Soccer Men...Football court...Throw ons...Penalty corners...Outside rule...Three yellow cards...Back of the goal. I like it.
Those umpires do a good job too!
John Jensen hat trick! A Gooner then...
Classic!
I thought he must have been talking about American football (since I know little about it) until he started talking about the two halves.
Half time lemons instead of oranges😂
The IWC wins by far! That's a very cool complication.
Agree, it's a great complication. However, I'm sure any serious diver would always go with an electronic dive computer over trusting a mechanical meter. I know I would.
The complication is interesting, but the poor finish shown on the hands of the IWC is quite appalling. Especially at this price point.
I'D love to dive with this IWC
for small dives aroud 20m it must be nice to test it
I take a digital depthmeter very reliable and a citizen promaster. The idea is to try to relay on analog while having digital for redundancy and safety.
I hate the scubadiving wrist computers... to be true almost any 100% digital watch
The deep 1 would be a great backup to a dive computer
I wonder how it performs against a proper dive computer
Dying from laughing at the deliberately provoking football mistakes. Wonderful work!
I love it! Football court! Soccermen! and more
"penalty corners" "outside rule" 😅😅
@@lrozenwater "throw-on"
He said football umpire. Fml 😂😂😂
is there a similar one for hockey?
The JLC Geophysic True Second is an absolutely brilliant and underrated watch. It's one of those watches which sings in real life. Typically picture's don't do it justice, but bravo for yours. They're stunning. I'd love to see you conduct a full review of the watch.
That Hublot racing tractor after the elegant JLC was a jumpscare
It is one ugly watch, I wasn't dying about Hublot, but now I'm sure
That macro lens work on the JLC is spectacular. What awesome finishing is shown with it and the way the seconds hand really works.
I think he ment to show the different levels of finishing on these brands... JLC IS PERFECT
iloper it is a far off grail.
Tod S. “Grail” is not an objective measure... and the JLC has the best finishing of the group by far. Despite less flourish than more expensive watches, there are very few errors. The Hublot and IWC look like garbage in the macro shots by comparison.
Cooper Wardell , yes and it was not meant to be objective. Just an acknowledgement of the place that JLC has in horology imho.
Tod S. Oh man I’m sorry I feel like a dick. I read your comment wrong and thought you were saying JLC is nowhere near being a grail like JLC is shit or something. Ha my bad.
The finishing on that JLC is amazing. The date window finishing in incredible.
Wow that Geophysic is absolutely gorgeous.
The finishing on that hublot seconds hand is awful
I think its coated in painted on lume
This is fantastic. Keep up the good work
I skipped the section with the Hublot!
Never like Hublot
second hand that you see on screen is maybe 50 times bigger than normal.
Great video as always, but I came to the comments to find out how many people failed to get the deliberate football mistakes were jokes.
brizza72 There were football mistakes...? 🙂
This is probably the best consumer targeted watch channel on RUclips. You clearly write for each video. Reminds me of how Top Gear introduced cars. It's just weird that Watchfinder is a watch retailer...you wouldn't expect a retailer to have this sort of thoughtfully written videos on RUclips that doesn't seem to be about selling a timepiece.
I love the look of the Jaeger here! Like a Milgauss only better! And the depth gauge on the IWC is fascinating. Couldn’t care less about the middle one though. I don’t like Hublot or football.
When I considered a Milgauss ... I found out that the movement inside was the same as the AirKing and Explorer. The Geophysic allowed JLC to supply performance that required 20k from JLC but only charged 10k. Meanwhile the Milgauss is actually a pretty expensive piece in comparison to the movement inside, which you can access from cheaper models.
In any case .... mechanical watches arent that great in terms of value or performance. The logical scientist is less likely to make such an anachronistic choice. And so ... they were both discontinued 😅. I do like that 50s scientist aesthetic though.
I’m in tears! 😂. Throw-ons, penalty corners , the outside rule, back of the goal, three yellow cards... Well played, sir, well played indeed.
Late last year I seriously considered this Geophysic True Second. But the True Second complication was only a secondary consideration. Rather, I was attracted to this watch by its overall excellence of engineering, dial design and overall proportions. In the end I opted for something else, but this is a watch that can and should stand on its own. Although the True Second complication is worthless in and of itself, it is an indicia of JLC’s engineering prowess.
I'm interested in knowing what it is that you chose over the jlc
Soham Parab - Ultimately, a Rolex Datejust 41 in Rolesor with smooth bezel, white dial and Oyster bracelet (Ref #126303)
I got a JLC TS last year. I like that it is an excellent watch and people don’t see it as thousands on my wrist. I love the double heartbeats that come from it; the sounds of the ticking and the balance “wheel.”
I also got a thunderbird datejust.
My favorite is the JLC. I wear it for me. Anything Rolex is immediately noted by others.
The Geophysic is a great watch. The deadbeat is the grandfather of the chronograph, and useful for manually timing events. It's also a throwback to the regulator clocks of old, and useful for syncing/timing a clock. It was also Walter Lange's favourite complication. It's always been a sign of precision. I believe JLC made this watch for true lovers of horology, who know and appreciate the history and challenges. Sales and recognition be damed.
David cool story, needs more dragons
Can't unsee the over painted part of the grey triangle on the IWC
Agree and to a degree it has damaged my view of the brand.
I love the JLC and how under the macro you can see the minor take up before each second breaks.
The most useless complication is sloppy finishing.
I got the true second also. It is very subtle, do not attract too much attentions as people mistake it as a quartz watch. Also, the jlc brand is subtle for people around me, a rolex or the kind usually attracts a lots of attention.
Finally to add, this feature is one of the few complications have not yet been replicated by replicas so far, as least without decent reliability. Maybe it is a good idea to talk about features are not replicated on replicas?
This man's knowledge of watches compensates for his lack of knowledge of football.
They were all tongue in cheek and intentional.
Tim is next level
If the soccer mans lemons wasn’t a hint.....
Penalty corners haha 😂
@Andrew Steel He and Tim are the only people I've heard say "Zhe Zheir La Coot." They must know something.
Wow (Owen Wilsons voice), that Jaeger is quite stunning. Lovely video.
Low-key love the way the JLC flies under the radar like a quartz watch but those in the know is something really special. Like a plain sedan with a muscle car engine under the hood.
That JLC is a true allrounder as a dress and daily watch!
I don't think there's a watch more beautiful than the geophysic.
A complication I'd love to see on a lot more watches is the humble power reserve. My Lorenz Anniversary chronograph has one, and I simply _love_ it, it's so nice to always know that, especially when you're not wearing it for a few days.
The movement of the second hand on the JLC GeoPhysic under macro is mesmerizing
Lol at the football references
I don't like Hublot (they manage to make Breitlings look supremely understated) and I find football a bore, but that complication is cool.
Im the kind of guy he speeks about in the video relating to football.
I didn't like hublot due to their "bulkyness" and BLING but with time i kinda appreciate them... the complication is very cool, and you gotta give them some credit.
This Hublot complication is the best thing I can say about their watches. Otherwise they seem like an elaborate Ponzi scheme for rich boys.
Hublot should just become a movement manufacturer. They suck as a watch company.
The JLC True second is a stunning watch, i love mine!
Goephysic is one of my favorite watch. You should do a review about it.
Agreed. And hopefully at the same time help set the record straight about the deadbeat.
1) This feature is the one of what i'm looking for. I wish, I could buy it.
2) Well, relatively useless except the chronograph.
3) What an unusual helpful feature for deep divers or sea explorers.
'If you're the kind of person who can explain the outside rule with one hand behind your back'. That is why I love this channel
For me the true winner is the Jager-LeCoultre, just look at all the details, beautiful execution.
And also great video :)
The sheer wealth of knowledge mixed with great humour is why I wait for every one for of your videos with baited breath. Never stop please! 👏🏻
That Jaeger LeCoultre is exactly the watch I need
The Geophysic is really nice. The others have cool complication but they are very niche,.
that jlc is perfection , now im off shopping for one.
My opinion is that "Tachymeter" or "measure in seconds how fast car travels one kilometre distance" or divide 3600 by seconds equals the speed in km/h is most useles feature in expencive watches. "Hmmm, i wonder if my limodriver is speeding...".
The Geophysic is a pure gem. It satisfies my OCD tendencies beautifully.
ANOTHER awesome vid - WELL DONE !!!
That JLC is simply STUNNING - the quality of the finishing soooo beautiful 👍🏻👍🏻
As a Brit, the faux Football comments were HILARIOUS 😂😂😂😂 !!!!
All the best for 2019, and I yearn for even more of your magic throughout the year.....
That IWC diver with depth measuring/recording is extremely impressive.
Not a fan of hublot watches, but for some reason I really like this complication! 😅😂
The Hublot and IWC are pretty hideous watches, but the tech behind them more than makes up for it. Two watches I would never own, but I can really appreciate the effort behind them and they're really cool to see in action.
Love the JLC!!
Love the look of the JLC. Understated and beautiful.
I can easily think of five reasons why I would prefer a MVMT to a Hublot. The first is that I would waste less money on a watch I wouldn't want to have.
That is on point.
M R hahaha perfectly said
Agree hublot is waste of money.
Hublot is like Hummer H2
watch? its in your smartphone
The JLC Geophysic True Second is one of my favourite watches, maybe number one. Would feel guilty expending so much on a watch though :'-(
On the second hand market they trade for a song. Pick one up now before people catch on. :)
The most useful thing to know in the art of buying a good watch is to know what is a THREE CENTRE HAND manual wind mechanism. This is the basis of the other good mechanical watches.
The epitome of high horology is the Three Centre Hands manual wind mechanism, with a long minute hand, and an even longer second hand. Even in Patek and Lange, the manual wind watches are either 2 hands or with a sub second hand. They reserved the Centre Three Hands for their highest range, so high that hardly anyone can reach them.
For a connoisseur, a luxury watch maker must have a Three Centre Hands collection in their stable. For GS, there is the SBGW series. I bought the SBGW231, the latest for 3K. It runs for more than 3 days fully wound, and only off by +1 sec in that three days. The hands and indices sparkle like diamonds against an equally beautiful custard dial. My calatrava which cost many times more just cannot match up. The back case has more details than my Nautilus which is plain. As for the finishing of the mechanism itself, you put the two together and see for yourself. And mind you, the Nautilus cast a lot lot more. Then again, both the calatrava and the nautilus are not the Three Centre Hand mechanism.
You need a very good mechanism to carry a long minute and second hand. I can see that my Hulk and Batman has very short minute hand as compared to my other GS sport watches.
Where are all the good man!
Hardly can find anyone who is capable of speaking the truth, bec almost everyone we hear is trying to sell us something.
The way retrograde hands just whip back is always so cool to see.
It all depends on the owner of the watch! For professional Geophysics Engineers / Field Scientists, Football Referees and Divers I would say all the complications are very useful. For a watch collector, enthusiast or your average punter they are probably useless. Great video! I learned about 3 very interesting watches I didn't know about.
When it comes to mechanical watch complications I don't see any as "Useless"
They're good conversation points at worst, Awesome Aquatimer, Great vid.
Ok. The IWC was just awesome!!! That complication is useful and amazing, and a marvel of engineering.
Definitely useful. But; in the case of the Hublot, VERY SPECIALIZED. I especially admire the IWC (Deep 1). I just got an IWC Top Gun Miramar chrono. The ceramic case is WONDERFUL.
I tried using a dive watch for diving. It mainly ended up as a backup to my dive computer. Most serious divers I know consider a dive watch to be a ridiculous complication. In the Puget Sound, divers wear bulky drysuits, and wristwatches are not common. But if I was near warm water that IWC would be very useful to me.
Those macro shots make both the Hublot and the IWC look like shabby work next to the JLC. Good thing they didn't compare them to Japanese high ends.
The third watch had some very useful functions.
Love that IWC!
I would like to see a similar style depth monitor indicator and recorder but for altitude
The IWC seems pretty handy to have at certain moments or activities but if i had the money to buy it i wouldn't be using it as intended (deep diving), the JLC one Sounds cool but im not normally exposed to such strong forces of physics that it would warrant a watch that can withstand them (and it ticks like a quartz), very amazing watchmaking skills and engineering though, no denying that. The hublot is pretty much useless in comparison lol
For some reason, always wanted a dead beat seconds watch. Rolex made one in the 60's i believe. Most of them have been converted over to function like normal mechanical seconds though, as the mechanism that enabled this complication was only used for that one model, discontinued shortly after, and for ease of service, deleted. Habring makes one too. If i had it, id spend the absurd amount of money on a mechanical watch so that it looks like a quartz. Im silly.
I think I’m the only one on here that really likes that Hublot, it’s truly hideous, but I love it. And I’d be loving it as I walked into the shop selling the JLC and handed over my hard earned for that simply stunning understated gem of a watch.
Hello mr. watchfinder, i love your videos and was wondering if you'd ever run into the german brand kienzle? i dont think theyre especially valuable or mechanically marvelous but just wanted an expert opinion if it was there. cheers
Very cool features! Especially that IWC. Any chance you could review some Cartier, specifically the Tank Solo?
How on earth (or water) did you manage to film that depth gauge working?
drummerboy1066: They used a watch pressure tester. They are available in various grades and pressure ratings, any decent watch repair shop would have one.
I don't like Hublots, and I have a lot to say about the finishing of the presented watch, but being a football fan, I really like the feature on this Hublot!
Can you please do a review of the Omega Speedmaster 38
Favorite watch channel for sure!
Raj Chen yes, they are the best of their kind.
Absolutely 👍
I can't decide which one was the coolest! Deadbeat seconds because its totally backwards - an automatic acting like a quartz. I love the football timer but I'm mad its a Hublot lol. and the IWC was just fun.
It's the other way around, it's the quartz which copied the deadbeat second.
At first I was like quartz? seriously? Then I was seriously impressed....
Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic a beautifully made mechanical timepiece posing as a cheap quartz watch with a second hand that doesn’t even align with the dial markers.
It's great that the Hublot has lumed indicators and numerals in its "football section," since so many games are played at night with no lights. Even better, it's gratifying to know so many referees can afford Hublot.
I love the JLC Geophysic True Second. This watch made me a dead beat convert.
I bet you see quartz much better now!
@@JoseAntonioBlancodeCordova Well I admit I'm over that period I found quartz watches as "the bad guys", now I simply like them all.
I absolutely love these high-end quartz-style dress watches. I didn't even know any of them existed. I have now seen this JLC and even a Rolex in another video on the channel. I didn't know Rolex made a quartz watch. Big fan of those. Especially with those display casebacks showcasing the movements. Just absolutely beautiful.
The JLC isnt quartz.
The extremely specific and even gimmicked Hublot makes me love it so much
As useful as a two handed mobile, but still they have uniqueness on their side. I actually really like that IWC complication, and impressed by the JLC's specs.
I have noticed You changed pronaunciation of Jaeger-LeCoultre to more accurate. Nice!
Your reviews are as amazing as these watches! Keep em coming!
That Jaeger Is designed for those who want people to think they were too cheap to get an automatic and bought a quartz instead. For what that Hublot cost, there should be NO stutter in that seconds indicator.
Some people questioning that the football related errors are deliberate or not.. Penalty corners, outside rule, football court? Even my younger sister knows it’s called the offside rule and she once asked me why Man Utd don’t play against England...
That JLC is stunning, but not a fan of the single tick. Appreciate the mechanics/watch engineering behind it, but for most people it will be lost on them, and part of reason they love mechanical watch is the sweeping second. Not a fan of the other 2, but superb video as always. Informative and beautifully presented. Look forward to more of these in 2019
The deadbeat is a complication for those who know and appreciate the historical reasons. This was JLC building a watch for true lovers of horology. And up close it is stunning. Watchfinder did a wonderful job showing off the fine detail.
Ticking seconds helps me measure pulse. Love the true second
The IWC OF COURSE!
I love to swim and I would challenge myself to test how deep I could go while on holidays down south.
I’ve always had a Sweet Spot for IWC
She’s a Looker Too.
A day and date window on any dive watch is useless. " Hey Juan , it is Tuesday, we need to surface".
The Vostok Amphibia 120813 I wear while diving has no date window.
These videos are always excellent, in my opinion, enhanced by the apparent fact that they are narrated by Alan Davies.
Love deadbeat seconds, thank you for the review. Would love you to review the Jaquet Droz deadbeat. I believe EBEL had the first in house football watch, correct? The 1911 Tekton Calibre 245 launched the end of 2008. The JLC compressor dive is more to my taste than the IWC. I like my big watches crazy and everything else elegant, slim four-sided and only 2-3 hands.
Good evening . Can I please ask for a advice . How shut I properly ajust a mechanical watch hour or two BACK? Knowing that turning the crown backwords is not good for the movement.
That Hublot is absolutely horrifying
That IWC is so clever! neither of the other two come close to it
I would certainly love to use them for the purposes they were made for, because yes, are there better ways to track, time, and record, there are. But doing it with something designed like these...
Is it the camera angle or not? The second hand on the Jaeger- LeCoultre does not seem to land exactly on the second markers,
What is the finishing on this dial called??? I love this Matt kinda frosted up close look but don’t know what it is 😭
Thanks for the correct pronunciation of Jaeger Lecoultre.
JLC represents strong heritage and remarkable craftsmanship for the price of a Rolex with the build quality of Patek Phillipe.
As much as I love JLC -and I do- the movement finishing of the average JLC is a step down from the average Patek.
Why did True second's second hand wasn't hitting second marks?
It does.its the camera angle you are looking at.
Aaargh! When the IWC depth hand is reset it rests slightly CCW from 12 o’clock. That drives me nuts! I have a Speedmaster that does that with the second hand when the chronograph is at rest. It makes me crazy!
Depth guage is a really good idea especially max depth ability!
The Game Timer on the Hublot is fascinating though quite useless.
But it´s not 20k+ fascinating and it´s still a watch to suit tiny bicycles and huge shoes....
If my wrists weren’t so thin and gangly I’d be entertaining the notion of yes, but, as you’ve probably already guessed I’m going to have to learn to reserve my judgment, 1) because I am indeed fascinated by the measurement of time and don’t want to become the instigator of any negative reprisals upon good sound workmanship, but mainly 2) it’s Sunday and I’m writing this whilst everyone’s sitting through mass.
God bless
LM
The finish on the Hublot and the IWC is subpar for the price range, and the dead beat seconds of the JLC doesn’t align perfectly with the markers. Would expect more from those brands, even crazy Hublot.
The auto captions rendered Hublot as "who blow" (which no one would blame it for) and in the next sentence spelt único complete with accent!
Regarding the True Second: I find the smoooooth sweep of the Springdrive much more appealing…
Yeah if wanted a second i would get quartz much cheaper and more accurate
