Really grateful for all your tests and measurements Sir. Got me started making my own stove and saved me a lot of time. Greetings from Denmark to you and Max
Excellent video, thanks. This stove combines simplicity with efficiency, what more can one want? It appeared that the blue flame licked up the side of the pot, so some heat was lost. The version of this stove without holes in the catfood can boils water more slowly but probably wastes less heat, so... I'm thinking one row of holes around the can might be a good compromise: Hotter than no holes but not as wasteful as two rows of holes. It's my starting point anyway. Thanks for the pioneering work.
I have enjoyed making all kinds of Alcohol stoves..from double walled Pepsi can models to Penny stoves, to one piece rolled over Bud Light aluminum bottle, to Double walled aluminum bottle to one of my own design.... I tend to like over-engineered and elegant stoves (I've made probably about 30 different ones) I broke down and ordered the carbon felt and made this one. Holy Moley. This thing is a blast furnace. You want to boil water? Look NO Further. And it proved remarkably stable... that was a surprise.
sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost the login password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Azariah Ivan thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I just tested this without the carbon felt and it boiled in 4mins 10secs and burnout at 7:05 great boil time, this is the fastest boil time I've ever had, it beats my capillary stove, but without the felt, it's a little tricky and takes some extra time to prime it, so with the carbon it does not improve the overall time or anything, but it helps prime it faster and thus reaches it's boil faster without wasting anytime waiting on it to prime.
Please let me add my thanks, too. Especially when it's so hot Max stays in the AC. As you know, while most of your viewers are probably looking at this from a backpacking perspective, mine is for another reason. Easy to make, low cost effective stove to give to others in grid-down to heat a can of soup. Since Super Cat appears to meet this need, very interesting to see trade-offs when "tweaking" this stove. Hunting for the sweet-spot so to speak. Thank you.
Great stove... if u cant wait till winter do a test of it in ur freezer either way a vid like what would be great to watch.. probably work best in a deep freeze i gueses... I look at stuff from an ultralight backpacking point of view most of the time.. but this stove has to be right up there ....... so many uses such a fast boil and easy to get items to make it from.
....ok, been watching many of your vids, and all are very informative. So over all your stoves. Which is your go to when heading out for a weekend backpack trip, no matter the season? Thanks bunches.
Cant find the video of the supercat with carbon felt. Saw the Part 1 qnd came here to this playlist for the follow-up and I don't see it... Was it recorded?
Hey from Ohio I don’t know if your still testing or not but I have an idea for a spill proof fancy feast stove that is just tool up carbon felt and insert into the center of the stove it think it would if it tips over I would like to see you try this and keep up the good work i enjoy your videos thanks
both parts, meaning that you need to use an end cap and a smaller diamater bushing.I know that it would be a lot heavier but a lot stronger if used every day.
What other fuels can be used in case of an emergency and you don't have alcohol can you use Zippo lighter fluid can you use charcoal lighter fluid can you use gasoline can you use kerosene what fuels will work
These stoves are meant to be used with some form of alcohol as fuel - methanol (yellow HEET in the US), denatured alcohol, or isopropyl ("rubbing" alcohol) in a pinch. All of the other fuels you mentioned are much too explosive to use safely. PLEASE do not use them! They will cause uncontrolled flames and even explosions if you do. SAFETY FIRST!
Mr. Hiram, I am working on a remote fuel feed for my alcohol stove. where can I get the little brass fuel fitting or fuel nipple that screws into the stove and fuel source to hook the tube up to???
+chris malcom Hey Chris, did you ever find the Fuel fittings and nipples and tubing, I could never find the exact sizes needed at stores and online there were so many choices in sizes, I had no clue what to get, so I just bought mine from Minibulldesign, they are very cheap and he sells everything, also on the Remote fuel stations, all I did was get 2 nipples and tubing from Minibull and he sells an excellent and excellent top that fits the heat bottles that he hand makes himself, that wraps tubing around it an has a built in nipple, then all you need is 1 more nipple as it comes with tubing and this makes an excellent remote fuel setup, I also bought the Weedeater Fuel pump push button that primes the fuel on a weedeater that Hiram showed in one of his videos, all you need then is 1 of these that you can get cheap on ebay for 2 of them, and then Minibulls 2 nipples with tubing and you have a 2nd type of remote fuel feed, and you can drill into any stove, I've done it on the Fancy Feast, a rolled aluminum, a Trangia, an ALOCS, you can put a nipple on any stove and it will work.
+Roger David I've heard many people claim that any color except blue means it's wasting fuel if it's any other color, I don't know if that's true or not, but I did end up selling my Trangia, becaus in all my many tests with my Trangia aginst my ALOCS Stove, which is like a Trangnia Knockoff, the ALOCS best it out in every single test, so I sold my Trangia, the ALOCS boils in around 8-11 mins, in several tests, and with the simmer ring has burned as long as 1 hour 10 minutes on 1 oz. of fuel with the simmer ring over halfway closed, so except for not having a super fast boil time, the ALOCS could be the best stove made, and then you could do this simple cheap one, for you Fast boil needs. and you would be all set.
Any color other than blue means incomplete combustion and soot buildup. Rubbing alcohol works in the stoves but is too sooty for most people. Stove fuel (denatured alcohol or Methanol) is the best choice. As a substitute, you can use the Yellow bottle of HEET which works pretty well.
Hiram, I have been looking for the making of the original Ff stove, with the carbon felt. for how high to make the inner can. but just keep finding testing videos. can you email me the link for the original making of it. Thank You, Papabear
+Eric Poll Tomato Paste can cut 2 1/4 inches, I use a hole punch to punch 2 holes at the top just under the rim, and then instead of a full hole, I cut a half hole on the very bottom edge where it looks like a U, i punch 3 of these in the bottom, also you can use a Blue Bud Bottle, cut the middle out of it, 2 1/4 inches and same holes, and it fits snug, no carbon felt or anything, also works great, boils in 10-13 and burns to 14-19mins also using a Vienna sausage can inside the cat can, and you don't need to cut it, just punch the holes, 3 great ways to test it, also use on the original stove Walmart sells white Fiberglass in packs in the auto dept. for around $7 or so, so there are many ways to make it, test them all out and record the times and choose the one that best suits your needs for you, check out my 2 new videos dealing with stove accessories, thanks.
Hi, I’ve just made my first fancy feast stove and noticed blue jets coming out from the holes in the taller can. This gave me an idea to ask you a question, if you haven’t done so already, have you done a test with multiple holes in the taller tube?
i think all you guys are fixated on rapid boil only. how about a multi purpose version that burns for much longer for slow boil-rice, taters, or even pan baking. i think maybe this version with a rotating flue system to bloke the holes. you would have to reduce the holes to accomodate the flue system . or i suppose you could carry two versions-fast and simmer options
Exceptional video and process, I'm just starting with alcohol stoves, I now know more, thank you.

Thanks Hiram for these boil time tests.

@Azariah Ivan thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.

@Azariah Ivan it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass :D
@Arthur Jimmy glad I could help :D
Try putting more holes in the bottom of the inner can so the added carbon cloth has more opportunity to absorb fuel.

Which part do you mean should be replaced with a copper fitting? The inner can or the outer can? Copper will be much heavier.

nice mod but ill prefer this mod in the inner can instead.
You have great videos, thank you. Love the Happy Dog :)
could you make it out of coper fittings????.....big ones
Why does my Trangia and other alcohol burners produce a yellow flame after "blooming"?

Can you use fiber glass instead of carbon felt?

Simmering with an alcohol stove has been problematic.
Trangia and Redcamp both have simmer rings.
