So in all the drama about Smoke Ring, I think what gets lost is discussion about how important they are to so many of us who might feel marginalized. I joined the society, and as a gay male, found myself singing to Lida Rose, songs about a blushing bride, to Mamselle, the Sweetheart of Sigma Chai. Singing about a love I couldn’t connect with felt jarring, and it’s not conducive to a heartfelt, authentic performance. It was only last year that Soundtrack (a male-presenting quartet) sung about Mr. Sandman) and I saw my first performance that mad me feel represented. With Smoke Ring, that representation was turned up several orders of magnitude. When the younger generation is asking for these performances to be released, it’s not to cause drama. I know there are some people who are sensitive and feel offended by the art they shared. But the hurt and censorship has an equal or greater harm to those who feel the censorship is about marginalizing us. It feels like as soon as there was a quartet that felt authentic to my generation, they were censored. This is why I request BHS respond to why this censorship is taking place. It feels like the video version of burning books, which I’m strongly opposed to.
To a degree, everyone who sings barbershop is not going to 100% connect with the lyrics, especially on the old songs and polecats. It does not mean someone is marginalized because they are not singing their exact life story/circumstance.
@@cpjds1 My understanding is that's the point of the Performance score, "did you act good". As a biracial gay guy I'm all for representation in the media, but personalization of subject matter otherwise outside your experience so you have an authentic response in the moment, that's just a core part of most American/Western acting technique. As for not feeling represented in the classic songbook... I mean, you're talking about a genre grown out of an all-male tradition from a very heteronormative period, a genre with contest rules that enforce delayed adoption of styles, songs, and ideas from the modern day. There aren't going to be many old favorites available to a quartet (of any gender makeup) that sing of romantic love for a man, not without changing pronouns and/or names to make it work (though those that do exist are often regendered to be about women, of course). Smoke Ring singing "Hit Me Baby One More Time" is a fun step forward, but the works available to you won't be broadening much until quartets are singing "Alejandro" and "Sk8er Boi" or the like.
@@cpjds1 that’s fair, but for the first 8 years I never even dreamed about singing a song authentically me on stage. Now, I can see a possibility of singing a song that has a deep connection. @@DeanHoisington Keep speaking up. It may not bring change immediately, but when organization higher-ups talk about various upcoming decisions, your voices will be on their minds.
The reason barbershop exists as a distinct sound is because it is curated and has a governing body that manages its definitions. Which is why it exists at all. I'm not an insider. I really only listen to the humor quartets. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the long sincere songs singing the same lines over and over again with different harmonics I find boring to listen to. Although, I do recognize that as a distinctive feature of the music type. So, here's my take: I'm not sure the only thing going on here is the genders of the love songs. The Smoke quartet sounded distinctly different from the others to my untrained ears. They had a lot more reliance on individual voices doing (not a musician so I don't know the right words) distortion/vibrato and being very distinctive. Whereas, what I expect from barbershop is the interest / dissonance coming from blending of four fairly equally valued voices. I mean their costumes were way more overtly sexy, as were the song topics. And the movement too I suppose. But they also didn't drop any of the call back jokes or audience interactions, or the other very distinctly barbershop type tropes. They sounded more like a soloist with back up singers than the blended four voices I recognize as barbershop. I mean, they had harmony. And I could hear them hit chords. It just felt like those were ornaments on a song, rather than a baked in, integral characteristic of the performance. 🤷♀️ To get more representation of different gendered views (at this particular contest/venue), you might have to wait for a quarter to figure out how to represent that in a fully recognizable barbershop way. 🤷♀️ And actually, songs utterly independent of romantic love can fit in easily. Don't forget they exist. I mean, irrespective of attraction, humans share huge swaths of experience in common. That commonality shouldn't be thrown out with the bath water.
@@ZackBlackwood97 They docked points from their performance of "Air Conditioner" for being in 'poor taste' smh and didn't include it in this rebroadcast or in their uploads (you can find other performances of it on the bhs youtube). imo the bhs should reconsider.
@@ZackBlackwood97 The penalty was because the song contained some innuendos that the judges thought were inappropriate. I don’t really agree with the penalty but I don’t care that much about it, my problem is with the bhs not posting the song. They also didn’t upload either of Smoke Ring’s quarterfinals songs because some people complained about the lead wearing a low cut dress. There have been plenty of racist and sexist songs uploaded on this channel in the past, but apparently they draw the line at a woman showing cleavage. Also, when the lead received vile and threatening messages from a bhs member, the bhs put out a vague statement basically saying “sucks but we can’t do anything about it”

It took me so damn long to understand that NF4 burst their bubble. I didn't know only 5th place and up get medals, so they were in the bubble for like 3 years, and they finally won a medal. NOW they can quit.
In the final scores PDF there is a footnote on Air Conditioner that reads "Scores penalized for Not in Good Taste (IX.A.3.b)". Presumably they didn't want to re-publish a song deemed "in poor taste".
It's bad form for BHS to censor their finals performance. They already penalized them in the scoring and could have just placed a NSFW label on it if they were really that concerned. What a disappointment.
@@willharris5985 Sadly winning quartets are not allowed to compete in subsequent competitions. Members of winning quartets can if they're in a different quartet though, Tony DeRosa for instance has been in many of them (Keepsake, PLATINUM, Max Q, Main Street, and now Three and a Half Men). Now that they've won though you might catch them at AIC shows or maybe they'll decide to tour who knows.
@@hannahotten4907 When BHS allowed not men to enter its contests in 2022, it removed any gender classifications at the international level. Its districts and alliance organisations may still organise separate contests or give separate awards for different gender classifications.
@@alistairwall5470 Okay, yes, I did know there weren't separate male/female/mixed awards. It's just that I think in the 2022 and '23 contests, they had the contestants marked as M for male, F for female, or X for mixed, or at least I thought they did. They didn't do that this year, though, hence my most recent comment.
Am I correct in thinking Newfangled Four shouldn’t have been able to compete? People telling me you can’t compete in another quartet with 3+ of the same members but they have competed with the same 3 (the ones on the left side) and are in this new configuration with a new right sided member. How is this allowed but another quartet wouldn’t get away with it?
That rule only applies to winning quartets. Quartets change members all the time (note Clutch singing about their old bass moving to Korea), but once you win the contest you would have to be in a new quartet with at least two different people to enter the contest again. Hope this helps!
@@jacksoncampbell-mb3fl what are the rules around the “next generation” quartets? Is that the same/ can they compete in the main conpetition if they win or do they have to find a new quartet too?
@@willharris5985 I think Varsity winners can move up to the open competition after winning (according to their second set, NF4 won that one in 2013, then subsequently have been performing in open)

@@willharris5985 I think they could bring him (or some other genius) in if that's what they wanted to do, but I'm pretty sure their massive fan base would see that as a betrayal, and I'm not sure their extraordinary popularity would survive.
To get more representation of different gendered views (at this particular contest/venue), you might have to wait for a quarter to figure out how to represent that in a fully recognizable barbershop way. 🤷♀️
And actually, songs utterly independent of romantic love can fit in easily. Don't forget they exist. I mean, irrespective of attraction, humans share huge swaths of experience in common. That commonality shouldn't be thrown out with the bath water.
Now I need the compilation of all the tags in one video :D
The ladies just killed it!❤
Holly shit the ladies are so good ????
The way the BHS handled the whole Smoke Ring situation is infuriating and disappointing. Justice for Smoke Ring
What happened?
@@ZackBlackwood97 They docked points from their performance of "Air Conditioner" for being in 'poor taste' smh and didn't include it in this rebroadcast or in their uploads (you can find other performances of it on the bhs youtube). imo the bhs should reconsider.
@Selichan42_SA follow up question, why was it considered poor taste?
@@ZackBlackwood97 The penalty was because the song contained some innuendos that the judges thought were inappropriate. I don’t really agree with the penalty but I don’t care that much about it, my problem is with the bhs not posting the song. They also didn’t upload either of Smoke Ring’s quarterfinals songs because some people complained about the lead wearing a low cut dress. There have been plenty of racist and sexist songs uploaded on this channel in the past, but apparently they draw the line at a woman showing cleavage. Also, when the lead received vile and threatening messages from a bhs member, the bhs put out a vague statement basically saying “sucks but we can’t do anything about it”
@ZackBlackwood97 They make some wink-and-nod dick jokes. You can watch the performance to see (just look up Air Conditioner Smoke Ring)
why is nobody talking about first takes high ass tag??? a# post from andrew???? first take really is crazy, i think they're getting gold next year. they gotta do more comedy songs
Andrew is crazy! And I hope they win gold next year, too!
Speaking off, his verse has one of my favorite musical references at 1:07:02. That quick dropping of texture and pushing parallel fifths was jarringly fun.
@@abydosianchulac2oh my god thank you for pointing that out that's brilliant XD I've been listening to their performance on loop since it got posted and fully missed that detail
It took me so damn long to understand that NF4 burst their bubble. I didn't know only 5th place and up get medals, so they were in the bubble for like 3 years, and they finally won a medal.
NOW they can quit.
Never
43:56 far out Marcus
The reveal in the editing killed it for me! I knew what was coming, but I didn't think it would look that ridiculous!
@@Mikowmer As they say, the production team understood the assignment.
as someone with an afro all i can say is that's so real
Now i have to see if they did the same for last year! I would love to see the finals in context!
Update, it looks like they did in 22, but not 23 😢😢😢.
Dad your son is a great tenor such control of his volume also a sweet rich timbre
Without that screeching tonality
Everyone Else = Roman Empire........ NF4 = Stonehenge
Full effect severely underscored
ain’t that the truth
That Colosimo fall, though.
That was no fall, that was sneak attacking the ground
Why was the air conditioner song removed?
@@TeraFormPrime gee I wonder
In the final scores PDF there is a footnote on Air Conditioner that reads "Scores penalized for Not in Good Taste (IX.A.3.b)". Presumably they didn't want to re-publish a song deemed "in poor taste".
This was way too good! And I don’t mean red ripe tomatoes! Not what I demand! ❤️😍
Ist take way to go with those notes at the end
I'm going to ask in regards to NF4, what's erfd
It's a call back to a routine that FRED used in the song L-O-V-E where their hats spelled "FRED" then they got them mixed up
@@Lozza1991 I was wondering the same thing, thank for explaining it!
What does ERFD mean?
😂😂😂
It plays on a routine that FRED used in the song L-O-V-E where their hats spelled "FRED" then they got them mixed up
How...how tall is the lead in Full Effect
so this is no. 5 for tony right? :D
Smoke Ring was overheating. Could've used an Air Conditioner. Too bad. They deserved better.
Do we know why their second song was subbed out in the video?
It's bad form for BHS to censor their finals performance. They already penalized them in the scoring and could have just placed a NSFW label on it if they were really that concerned. What a disappointment.
@@kimalley111What was their song?
@@abydosianchulac2 Air Conditioner, it was the first song of their finals set
@@kimalley111what was wrong with the song?
Who won?
Three and a Half Men
@@shouldibetrusted1191are they competing next year as well? I would love to see them one day!
Nope! Once a quartet wins, they may no longer compete.
@@LostInTheClouds how was Three and a Half men able to compete today if they already won in July?
It would have been better if we could have seen the quartet while they were singing!😢
Sunday night social was that classified as a mixed quartet
Why wouldn't they be?
No, as there are no gender classifications at international
They must have changed something, then, because I thought they did. Sorry for any confusion.
@@hannahotten4907 When BHS allowed not men to enter its contests in 2022, it removed any gender classifications at the international level. There are no male/female/mixed awards given at international.
Not me fast forwarding just to see NF4 and absolutely not me scrolling for only NF4 comments 👀
@@Lozza1991 could, say, newfangled four bring in someone like Tony DeRosa (who apparently won his 5th (!!) Gold medal this year!) and win with the reputation he has? Or are they only allowed to swap members once?
@@willharris5985 I think they could bring him (or some other genius) in if that's what they wanted to do, but I'm pretty sure their massive fan base would see that as a betrayal, and I'm not sure their extraordinary popularity would survive. They moved on from Ryan, but that was because he chose to leave not bc they wanted an upgrade.
I'm saddened by my favorite pastime going woke.
Imagine how Walt Disney would feel about his creation being morphed into a woke behemoth. Sad but preventable, if good people stand up against those who would bring it down.
@@SpikePecan define woke to me please. If by “woke” you mean accepting other perspectives and including everyone, I’m all in.
@@SpikePecan It's genuinely fascinating how people listen to songs and watch movies about Imagination and Creation and Fantastical Wonderlands for their entire lives and somehow take away that we should all stay in little cramped unimaginative boxes and that anyone who tries to leave is a bad person.
