I would just like to say a BIG THANK YOU!! To Radiocruncher and all of you whose comment's are very much appreciated. I have my 2001D back with me and she sounds amazing. I have not heard classical music sound so clear on any radio. Yet this one that Graham has repaired, recapped, re crystaled and over all made to sound the way it does is mind blowing. I cannot emphasise how happy i am with it. All your helpful hints and advice are testament to the result i have in front of me,. No person deserves more credit than you Graham as you certainly crunched your way through this one with help from overseas Spanish influences, Manuel. I am one lucky subscriber of you channel mate. May all your radio crunching digest well and energise you forever more. Best wishes, Lee near Liverpool, 73's!
Wow Lee amazing feedback thank you. I'm so glad that I was able to sort the radio for you and thanks for trusting me with it. It was certainly touch and go at times and thanks to Manuel I managed to get it going once more. It certainly performed better than both my 2001D's. Thanks again and have fun using it but try not to drop it again. 73 Graham
I had to buy a 2nd drive to back up the corrupt one Lee. I have now copied all the files over and formatted the old Drive so looks like I managed to save all the footage. I have edited part one but am struggling to transfer it from iMovie to RUclips.
Don't worry about it Graham, the footage that is. I have the set back in brilliant working order, so for me, that is all the conformation i need mate. I understand you have your finger's in many pie's so to speak, so worry not. I know from experience from watching your footage. Your faced with some near impossible task's. Most people would give up but i know its all about having the patients of a saint. You have, so! Let's just see what happens. Good luck from me and have a nice weekend off! If that's possible, ha ha! 73's (",)
A massive THANKS to you all for helping us out with your kind comments regarding my radio. Graham you are legend and you have my respect for all you that you do. I am lucky to have met you . THANK YOU!!!
I have never seen a sony radio repairer like you on this site. the fault finding is excellent. sony icf 55 or sony icf sw77 or grundig satellite 750 or 500 radio repair videosu series are waiting for you. your subscriber count will both increase and people benefit from your information. Best regards
Hi Chris. This one has been a marathon but thankfully it's all back together and working well. Chickens are laying well but we have 2 broody hens at the moment. Thanks for watching. Regards Graham
In the meanwhile , before you find a replacement, you could try to heat the crystal terminal slightly with your soldering iron , like if you were soldering the crystal pins from the factory. It might fix the temporary contact inside by melting the solder and making continuity without having to tear it apart. Good luck !
Hello Graham. There's a Sony parts dealer called Encompass Parts. As a last resort you can get one from them but they really hold you hostage. They want $29 US which is around 22 pounds UK. plus shipping. Hope you can find one elsewhere for a lot less but their stuff is original Sony NOS as I say a last resort. Good luck with it. ATB Doug.
Hi Doug. I'm sure that the owner would be happy to pay that to get it working again. I just tried ordering one but got this message Error received from the database -236->We do not accept international credit card orders under $200.00.
I have got my eye on a set on ebay Graham, fingers crossed we dont bid against each other lol. Thanks for the work you have done my friend i really appreciate it.
Thanks Lee. I've done a fair bit of work on it so far. Some good tips and leads coming in so fingers crossed. Keep your eye on ebay. All the best Graham
HELLO . Greetings from Istanbul You are doing simple clean narration of your tutorial and tutorial videos. the perfect person, helped with the questions I asked, thank you 6.275MHZ Information on XTAL THANK YOU
Don't hold your breath on spares. I have three of these unfortunately all working. God luck Graham. They are sods to work on but Sync detector with selectable side bands is great.
Hi Simon. Yes it's certainly a scary radio to work on but they are worth it as they perform really well. Fingers crossed that I can get a crystal. Thanks Graham
Can you tell me if the back case has wires connected to the main body for the batteries. I thought there were wires for that last time I opened it. Can't see any now. Thanks!
Wow, that's a bit much isn't it. They aren't a very customer friendly bunch to deal with and they charge what they want because they are the only show in town if you want original Sony parts. . That radio is certainly worth fixing particularly now that you have re-capped it. The synch detection tuning makes it one of the best shortwave portables ever made in my opinion. I'll keep my eyes open for you. There will be a few Ham Radio swap meets upcoming in my area, You never know if a suitable parts donor will show up. ATB Doug.
You could try removing the crystal and putting it on longish temporary flexible flying leads. Tapping the board would show up pcb trace cracks, if any and would prove the crystal is defective by tapping it directly. Good luck and hope this helps
Hi Colin. I'm not sure if you have watched all the video as I took the crystal out and made up an oscillator circuit to test it. I was able to prove that it was indeed faulty. Thanks for the tip though as it would have saved me a bit of time making up the oscillator if I had put it on flying leads first. Regards Graham
What about using a frequency synthesizer programmed to output 6.275MHZ using something like a MC145151 synthesizer chip not sure if you want to go that route using the 10.240MHZ as the synthesizer clock provided that there is enough room for a addin synthesizer board.
Thanks David. It's really tight in there but I might be able to squeeze a slim board in somewhere. Might have a look at doing that if there's no easier option.
Hello I've been looking on the net for suggestions with my ICF-2001D bought it in Fiji 1986. Perfect condition. Just sits on my night stand. The only problem is the volume nob doesn't slide smoothly. I wouldn't even removing the back. Who repairs these radios in america? Thanks Wayne
Good luck with your quest, I have a 2001D which needs some TLC, seems to have lost sensitivity, audio a bit muffled. I know there it a fet that can blow and that the capacitor on the audio c161? often needs changing out. Have you done any guides for this please?
The fet is easy enough to get to as it’s on the Jack board. This is aparantly due to static build up on external aerials. I have not had any experience changing these as all the sets I have worked on have been fine. You will need to get the board out to replace the capacitors but beware of the flat film cables which are very delicate. This is all in my videos so good luck. Graham
Graham, will look in my parts box for said crystal. If I've got one, I'll give you the nod, then I'll send it on to you. I don't make any promises, but if I can help, I will. Warmest regards, Wayne and Nina.
It might not be any help, but there is an electronics company in Kasson, Minnesota, Kiwa Electronics; (Kiwa dot com) that sells different performance upgrade kits for the ICF 2010/2001D. I picked up an ICF-2010 in April for all of $4 I think and was considering sending it to them to do the upgrades since I got scared just trying to look inside - past my skill level. Maybe they have spare parts for you? I hope you get it fixed; it is a great radio.
Thanks for the info Dan. I will have a look on their site in a bit. It is very tricky to work on so I don't blame you for getting it looked at by a specialist. All the best Graham
I have sent an inquiry form to quartslab. Also I found an eBay seller in Spain call Manuel who repairs these . He says he may have one from an ICF-SW55 so fingers crossed
Hey mate, hope your well. Just want to let you know i can forward some well earned cash your way soon. Hopefully we will see some more footage of the dreaded Sony and it's full recap and that crystal replacement. I would also like a better light fitted if you can get time. If not no problem Speak soon and all the best 73's, Lee.
Lee Locke. Hi Lee. It's all back together and working well. I did send you an email earlier. Not sure whether it's worth taking it all apart again for the lights but it's your radio so happy to have a look
Great timing mate, i have read your message and returned you a reply. Thank you!! FORGET THE LIGHT you have done more than enough on this one Sir, 73's Lee
It would be far easier to buy a tatty one and break but they are very much sought after even in a non working state and fetch high prices. Thanks for the suggestion, Graham
Radiocruncher Yes. But what makes you think finding a crystal will be any easier, or, less expensive. I'm not kidding, a replacement unit would be much more practical- not in any way being flip or glib here.
Radiocruncher you should contact this gentleman on Facebook, in the Shortwave Radio Station Listening group- Rex Mauldin- I have two. One is not working and the other doesn't work either but I seem to remember it would work for a short time. Boxed them up in order to make one work but now I have other more pressing matters to tend to. Anyone interested in buying them for parts?
Can you substitute a crystal oscillator for the plain crystal? Arrow Electronics has 6.275 Mhz oscillators. www.arrow.com/en/products/eph1300ettpd-6.275m/ecliptek
They are supposed to have show notes but I couldn't find any that mention the crystal since they haven't talked about the oscillator part of the transmitter yet. twit.tv/shows/ham-nation
Here's a guy who makes crystals and has a 6275 crystal for about $16. They are in a rather large FT243 case with 1/2" pin spacing though. af4k.com/FT243crystals6000-6499khz.htm You can also have them custom made by Andy in Germany. www.andyquarz.de/
Thanks for this Steve. The crystal has a tight gap to fit in so it would have to be the right size. I have managed to get one from a kind repairer in Spain so it's up and running again. I will be on the lookout for a future supplier though.
Radiocruncher no i never bid on it seeing as we have the crystal from Manuel now. I was going to but pulled out last minute. Got a feeling of regret now though.
Lee Locke we still need the ffc connector though. I have ordered some from China but don't expect them to fit. I am hopefully going to get a spares.set from the USA but still waiting on some prices, photos etc
Radiocruncher mmm ok Graham, thanks. Did you say it could be glued or do you need it to be mechanically sound? Connection wise, i wonder if Manuel has one. Shall i message him and ask?
If I can't get one or the Chinese one won't fit then I was going to pick up some eletrolube silicone to fix it in place as I don't trust glue on the delicate film cable. Let's see what turns up first.
I would just like to say a BIG THANK YOU!! To Radiocruncher and all of you whose comment's are very much appreciated. I have my 2001D back with me and she sounds amazing. I will try my best, i am going to make a box to house it in. For safe keeping and to keep it warm during winter, ha ha! 73 Lee.
Any news Graham? On the hard drive with the Mac?
I had to buy a 2nd drive to back up the corrupt one Lee. I have now copied all the files over and formatted the old Drive so looks like I managed to save all the footage. I have edited part one but am struggling to transfer it from iMovie to RUclips.

Thanks for your support. I have done a few of these now and recently did a recap on an ICF-SW77
When will we watch the videos? sw77
I am working hard to catch up with a backlog of videos. The SW77 will be coming soon. Thanks Graham
It's looks like your having quite a battle. Nice to hear the chickens in fine voice in the background. Regards Chris
Hi Chris. This one has been a marathon but thankfully it's all back together and working well. Chickens are laying well but we have 2 broody hens at the moment. Thanks for watching. Regards Graham
Yes one of mine was broody for 6 weeks and could not get her to snap out of it. Put then in a dog crate on bricks for a day normally works
In the meanwhile , before you find a replacement, you could try to heat the crystal terminal slightly with your soldering iron , like if you were soldering the crystal pins from the factory. It might fix the temporary contact inside by melting the solder and making continuity without having to tear it apart. Good luck !

6.275MHZ Information on XTAL
THANK YOU
Hello and thanks for joining me all the way from Istanbul. Always happy to help. All the best Graham
Interesting that crystal issue .. reminds me of same sort of problem with a ic735 wid drifting
Thanks!
No there shouldn't be anything connected
You got the original service manual that was good. ..
The crystal you're after is also used on one other radio, the ICF-SW55. Hope that gives you a better chance of repair, good luck.
Hi Peter. Thats interesting. I will have to keep an eye out for onew as I suspect they may be cheaper than the ICF-2001D. Thanks for the tip. Graham
Hi Peter. Thanks to you I have tracked down a repairer in Spain that has a crystal from an ICF-SW55. All the best Graham
THANK YOU Peter, you are a star man!
Amazing knowledge you guys have, i am so happy and relieved. Thank you so much!!
Love the chicken's in the background Graham ha. ......

Can i fix the frequency without using the oscilloscope? Please i need help 🥺
How to do it
A frequency counter should work

I wouldn't even removing the back. Who repairs these radios in america?

Hi Wayne. Have a look at the ICF-2010/ 2001D group on groups io. There’s a couple members on there in the USA that repair them
Good luck with your quest, I have a 2001D which needs some TLC, seems to have lost sensitivity, audio a bit muffled. I know there it a fet that can blow and that the capacitor on the audio c161? often needs changing out. Have you done any guides for this please?

Many thanks, guess I'll have to get brave lol, ever changed out the antenna and headphone sockets on one of these?
You definitely will need to be brave and extremely careful. No I haven’t changed the aerial or headphone socket so can’t help there
Graham, will look in my parts box for said crystal. If I've got one, I'll give you the nod, then I'll send it on to you. I don't make any promises, but if I can help, I will. Warmest regards, Wayne and Nina.

Thank you very much sir but i want this radio man bord
You want a board for one?
I have sent an inquiry form to quartslab. Also I found an eBay seller in Spain call Manuel who repairs these . He says he may have one from an ICF-SW55 so fingers crossed
Radiocruncher what has he got mate? A crystal?
Radiocruncher is that radio fix it on ebay from Spain Graham?
Hi Lee. His ebay name is radiofixit2015. Looks like he may have a crystal
That is good news Graham, has he been in touch with you to confirm this?
Thank you for all the effort you have put in mate!
Hi Graham, can you put some more footage of the Sony up. Thank you!
More footage coming soon Lee if I can sort my hard drive issues out on the Mac
Okay mate, GOODLUCK!!
Any idea when the footage of the Sony is going to be on Graham?
Hi. So did you manage to get the other one from ebay?! Hope so
I didn't bid on it Filipe as Lee was watching it as well
Hey mate, hope your well. Just want to let you know i can forward some well earned cash your way soon. They can be a nightmare for repairing.
Yes they can be a real pain when something goes wrong
Seriously, I think it would be a lot easier, and far less grief, to source a used 2001D/2010, and keep the broken one for parts.
I'm definitely with you Arthur and it would help with the broken ribbon cable connector. I will keep my eye out for a suitable doner
Radiocruncher you should contact this gentleman on Facebook, in the Shortwave Radio Station Listening group- Rex Mauldin- I have two.
