    I remember repairing mine 25 years ago when the small flexi probe. It was hard work as I only had a big iron and not as much experience as today. But with regular use they seem to keep going. Good show Graham, good luck with X2!

      Hi Simon. That must have been a nightmare with a big iron. Its well work recapping these but not for the faint hearted! Thanks for watching

    Always like Sony for providing decent manuals. Kept Father in Laws radio going for years with the use of them :-)

    I would suspect that the quartz wafer inside the can got fractured from the shock of the fall or that the contact points to the wafer have broken loose. if you can get it apart it might make for an interesting bit of microsurgery. not easy to do though without destroying the can. Enjoying the series. ATB Doug.

      Thanks Doug. I will have to try to find the old crystal and see if I can get it apart. Thanks for watching

    Hi can I ask, the audio on mine has lost most of its base, would this be a cap?

    Hello greatings from istanbul Graham!
    Since last week my ICF 2010 audio is half level when it is at max. I can hear mw lw and sw like ghost!
    FM no problem there is audio and reception is normal.
    AM there is signal ı can hear when volume is max as 1/3 of good days.
    Repair guy says it is 3 coils to be changed .
    What can be done?
    Many thanks for help!

      Hi. Sounds like there is an issue in the AM IF section. A coil would be unusual unless it’s had battery leakage or bad capacitors but I wouldn’t rule it out. More likely bad capacitors though

    Might be worth, even if you get a new one, taking a look inside the crystal can. I've heard a loop of copper wire around the end of your iron to suit the can may work. Then it all comes unsoldered at once. Evidently!! Might be even more masochism though, like those caps :) Regards - Andrew

    • @Radiocruncher
      @Radiocruncher  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Andrew. I think it would be good to get inside the crystal and see what happened. I just need to try and find it. I may even have sent it back with the radio! Thanks for watching, Graham

    Friend
    Until 10 months, it was in function but now I discovered that it is only function in FM band, so 87/108 Mhz.
    Sometime I have to switc ON and OFF, two or three, time in order to start and receiver FM band.
    Unfortunately, AM and Air frequency is stopped and the frequency is not changing.
    When I push the AM mode botton, the frequency displayed is 150Khz and dont change.
    The same, when i push Air mode. the frequency is 116 MHz and no change.
    No noise in both positions !!
    Someone knows what can be where the defect.
    Thanks any tips or help.

    • @Radiocruncher
      @Radiocruncher  6 лет назад +1

      It sounds like the PLL circuit is out of lock. This could be down to electrolytic capacitors or the crystal frequency could need adjusting

    No point is changing ceramic caps that don't generally fail - yes to electrolytic ones that actually fail -
    What, in your opinion, are the most problematic CAPS?
    My 2001D only starts to do funny things when the battery voltage get low -- and you notice it the most in the audio quality -- which is not the best even when the receiver is at its best.
    These Sony's were NOT known for great audio.

    • @Radiocruncher
      @Radiocruncher  5 лет назад

      As you say ceramic caps rarely fail. From memory the problematic caps were C160, C161 and C162. These are in the power supply circuit. Easy enough to get at but be very careful of the flat film cables. Good luck Graham
